  • RIP GINGER, I HOPE YOU N RED RUM ARE BACK TOGETHER AGAIN... LIVERPOOL LOVES YOU..

  • @1959child Yh RIP Ginger, you and rummy will never be forgotten........

  • Legendary horse! Stunning and determined you can tell he loved racing and that's what made him the nations favorite!Good old English Thoroughbreds :)

  • what is it for a song

  • Great horse in a race that kills horses every year. Sadly, it's brutal. I remember Red Rum, hearing about him. Relieved to say I've only seen the Grand National twice on tv and each time, horses dead. How is that sport? 20 horses dead since 2000 in it. Still this was a beautiful legendary horse, the painted portrait of him and his jockey is beautiful.

  • @tinselPixie He never died while racing he died of old age at the age of 30, he won his last grand national at the age of 12 and he got retierd at 15 but led the parades at Liverpool race track up until his death.

  • My horses Cousine!

  • elvis, ali, red rum all in the same bracket legends of the like we will never see again

  • R.I.P RedRum u are with horses just like u and we will never forget the legend's just like you

  • I will always love this horse, No horse will ever surpass his achievments. One of my biggest regrets is not going to see him in Dublin when he was present in the opening of a Bookies shop.

  • Red Rum was an Icon for Liverpool. Merseyrail have even named one of their trains after him (507 021) He is a great horse

  • R.I.P RED RUM

  • My favoutite memories are of all the polo mints he used to receive from children, as he used to love them! And also not forget he came second twice, should have been 1st in 1975, but jockey held him back too long. And also in 1978, he was injured and couldn't run but was still at aintree. He got quite stroppy because they were leading him away from HIS race!

  • i think denman this year

  • i'm thinkin denman too rather than Kauto, who do you think?

  • omg this is such a beautiful video. im sorry for the loss of your horse

  • I MISS HIM LOADS MISS U RUMMIEKINS

  • i av got red rum in my breyer collection

  • u ask any1 to name the worlds greatest horses and i promise u they put red rum at the top of the pack.

greatest gift given to the equestrian world!

  • WONDER HORSE WITH SUCH HEART, HEART OF A CHAMPION!

    RIP Red Rum!

  • No,Red Rum is probably the best loved of ALL racehorses, but he is a very long way from being the greatest. That accolade belongs to the mighty Arkle , no other horse comes close.

  • kuato star?

  • Desert Orchid was a fantastic chaser and is fondly remembered by thousands of fans. Kauto Star, too, is a terrific horse who is practically unbeatable at Kempton. However, neither of those two chasers,as brilliant as they were/are were in Arkle's class. Arkle had to carry weights of 12ston 7lbs and on occasion 13 stone ,giving 3stone to the other horses in the race and still beat them. Arkle carried 12stone 7lbs in the Whitbread Gold Cup at Sandown in 1966 and he still holds the course record.

  • True, but I don't think Kauto has tried that sort of a race yet, Rum had some heart though, he was relatively small.

Would love to have seen Arlke race mind you.

  • As far as Red Rum is concerned, the one thing which is as certain as night follows day and that is, Red Rum's Grand National record of 3 wins and 2 seconds will NEVER be equalled let alone beaten. If I was a bookmaker I would happily give odds of 20000 to 1 against ANY other horse doing what Rummy did. It just won't happen again.

  • To say Arkle was the greatest ever isn't really fair imo. We'll never be able to compare the lot of them in an even race so what's the point of a debate that's too deep, all legends! Agreed, Rum will always own that trophy and race, RIP Rummie

  • ps: who if any horse, was in Arkle's class?!

  • desert orchid?

  • he was one fucking good horse

  • Oh, Rummy was much, much better than just good! There are very few horses who can galvanize the public like Red Rum did. I think it's fair to say that he brought hundreds of thousands of people into the sport of horse racing as a result of his Grand National exploits. A truly wonderful horse who will long be fondly remembered.

  • i'd still like to see Kauto, Dessie and Arkle battle it out, all on on level and equal terms!

  • At level weights there would only be one result! I think possibly Kauto Star second and Dessie third.

  • Respected, I know Arkle is ur number one, I'm just thinkin if Kauto is worth puttin a few hundred quid on in March? Decisions decisions! I found some of Arkle's vids on here and he was a wonder-horse, like the rest of the mentioned. Time will tell.... :-)

  • I would be the last person in the world to advise you to put money on any horse as my luck is absolutely atrocious. However , I would be amazed if the winner doesn't come from either Kauto Star or Denman.

  • Ahhh well I just won my £60 on Imperial Commander! ; D

  • @KTWanPinkF don't know why this comment appeared here - was supposed to be on another video about the gold cup!

Have always loved Rummie and always will - irreplacable! xxx

  • @Dilupist1

who do u think would win

  • I'd like t o think Dessie, but prob Kuato, he's a freak :-)

  • Red rum is specail as he seemed to be able to read a race and know where he was in it at all times, and my dad used to joke he was half human! He behaved not just like a horse! and i think the public latched onto this making hime special that way, a cracking horse!

  • Yes,WELLBRAN, Rummie was special, there will NEVER be another like him. I think it's probably true to say that the whole country were willing him to win that third Grand National in 1977. Wonderful horse whose exploits at Aintree will be talked about long after we are all dead and gone.

  • R.I.P RedRum Was And Will Always Be A Legend!

  • he was a smallish horse but had the heart of a lion, he only did not win more grand national because he was carryin too much weight....

  • he is not the best steeplechaser there ever but he has his place among them

  • For those of us who were fortunate to witness Red Rum's exploits there is no doubt that he was and is one of the great sporting icons of our lifetime, or any lifetime for that matter..

I defy anyone to watch the highlights of his Grand National victories, particularly 1977 without ending up at the end with a lump in the throat and a tear in the eye. One of a kind, a true Sporting legend

    Red Rum

  • Red Rum the Great!

  • no red rum was irish dessie was english

  • ooo red rum spells murder backwords omggg

  • no they where both english owned and trained!!

  • was Red Rum and Desert Orchid related?

  • Every legend has a truely inspiring story behind him and Rum is no exception.

  • you could not say that he is not the greatest chaser ever

  • There will never be a horse that had the courage and willpower that he did he only came half way up those fences they looked huge compared ti him

  • you've spelt legend wrong

  • Probably the most known (to the general public) but the greatest ever.. Now you're pushing the boat out.

  • It's because the national is for every age I bet on the National from being 6 Red Rum is the one for me They never said he had died untill they had buried him at Aintree because of the amount of public that would have gone my opinion anyway

  • he died on my first birthday :(

  • Beautiful :) I true horse legend <3

  • The Peoples Champion

  • these nuggets banging on about ' he wasn't the greatest ' are completely missing the point !!!! He was a legend had the heart of a lion and the people not only loved him , they were genuinly inspired by him! Without doubt he saved Aintree AND the Grand National, They were dark days and we needed a hero, and they sent RED RUM! Now tell me he isn't the greatest !!!!!

  • TOTALLY AGREE

  • he was a small lame horse with a heart like a lion, and so intelligent never be another like him

  • he was the greatest and the song and tribute, is very fitting, sad day when we lost red rum !!. . . .

  • He was a gift from heaven - a horse for the ages. A stellar record at Aintree, but more importantly, he helped people believe in miracles.

  • is that desert orchid with him in 0:37??

  • He was nowhere near the best ever. A very loveable, national treasure, but not a 'great'.

Crisp gave him 24ilbs in 1973. Think about it.

  • I'd Like Too See You Win The National 3 Times

    'Great' Is An Understatement

  • Well I'm not a horse so it's unlikely I'd win one national! If you're talking about my username........chalk and cheese. Arguably the greatest middle distance flat horse in recent history, and a HANDICAPPER.

  • I Wasnt Even Born When Dancing Brave Was Around But I Know He Should Have Won The Derby And Was An Exceptional Horse

Its A Matter Of Opinion I Suppose

But What Red Rum Did Was Just Amazing

Give Me A Horse Like Kauto Star Anyday Over A Ravens Pass

  • You're right, it is a matter of opinion and I'm not going to argue about it on an internet message board!

Different horses mean different things to different people, regardless of ability, and I never meant to show Rummy any disrespect.

And I agree about Kauto, although having been at Sandown on Saturday I might take Master Minded instead ;)

  • dancingbrave. I hate to disagree with you - many would think he was one of the greatest ever. L'Escargot was the other great at the time.

  • Red rum was the best ever and still there is no horse like him xxxxxx NUMBA 1 FAN

  • I love Red Rum, he is the best racehorse ever!! I have a model of him, but why is his name spelt backwards MURDER?

  • CONDUIT, DUKE OF MARMALADE, KAUTO STAR, DESERT ORCHID, RAVENS PASS, SEPTIMUS, none of these are as great as red rum, this tribute is pure class, red rum was and still is the greatest race horse ever to grace a track, his presence his desire to win was unbelievable,, true true legend ..

  • Red Rum's Grand National record will NEVER be equalled let alone beaten, BUT he is definitely NOT greatest racehorse ever. Those people who proclaim Red Rum to be the best simply show their lack of horse racing knowledge. Arkle would have slaughtered Red Rum at level weights and would probably have beaten him giving away more than a stone on a park course(that is any course other than Aintree). I love Rummy as much as the next man, but he wasn't the greatest racehorse ever.

  • i agree that is true ones like denman and kauto star would well beat him

  • not over four and a half miles they wouldnt! dont forget rummy beat a dual gold cup winner giving l'escargot weight!

  • I agree with brutrules

Well beat him? Depends on the distance doesnt it?

Rummy would smash both of them in anything 4 miles + and that's a fact!

During his career Rummy won races at virtually every distance under the sun from a mere 5F to the national distance which shows true versatility. Why more is not made of this I do not know! Can the other two lay to such a claim?

No comment! As good as they are they are nothing compared to Rummy who is arguably the most famous racehorse in history

  • i shed a tear watching this tribute the best ive seen, red rum was a 1 an a million, no horse has or will ever match it, NEVER, 3 national wins and two seconds,.. the maker of the video well done its great to watch and to admire this horse. tearfull tho especially for horse lovers.. long live red rums memory. LEGEND

  • he was one of the best or should i say the best and always will be desert orchid is up there with him now

  • he'll always be one of the best <3

  • There will never be another 'Rummy'. He is and will be unique. WE will never see the national being won three times by the same horse ever again - its not possible?? One day in my lifetime I will see his statue at Aintree, and I know I will cry....he was the champion of all racehorses and he will remain so. x

  • I've got a painting of Red Rum up on my wall here above my computer! He's in the picture "We Three Kings" with Arkle and Desert Orchid painted by SL Crawford. I love this painting!

  • it takes a gr8 racehorse to win the grand national just once but, 3 times takes an amazing racehorse.

RIP Red we all luv u

  • Truly the greatest racehorse that I know of. Maybe even the greatest racehorse ever :)

  • your wrong there hes not one of the best hes the BEST

  • red rum was the best horse ever known to an and me. i miss him even though i wasn't born when he died. i have a model of him in breyer.

  • truly excellent video

    R.I.P

  • Poor Red Rum, Its so sad that hes gone.. I will never forget that battle he had with Crisp in the 1973 Grand Nat...It still makes me tremble with excitement.. 3 Grand nationals and also the Scottish grand national.. Super horse..

  • just cried my eyes out watching that.. a great tribute to a very special horse

  • red rum was my fav =0(

  • He was such an amazing horse my grandfather got to meet him, he has pictures of him standing right by Rum its so cool

  • I love Rummy too. For those who ask - his foot disease was pedal osteitis. It's inflammation which can cause thinning of the bone. Quite common in racehorses, as they're often exercised over hard surfaces. Hence, the sand and sea that Rummy trained on meant his disability didn't stop him being the GREATEST!

  • The place were they walk him at the beach is aintree,,the same place i take my pony oakley..i will try and film us galloping as he really arches his neck and goes into tb mode,,nostrils flaring and all!!! Red rum was just perfect my grandad used to be a groom of his to!! <3

  • the beach were they used to train him is in southport and were he raced (aintree) is in liverpool.

not tryin to be funny, just thought id let u no. x

  • I no,,the beach is called Ainsdale,,ppl mistake it for southport,,but its actually ainsdale :D

  • i no tha, but u sed it was in aintree and thats in liverpool! no were near southport - ainsdale.

  • Oh yeh i meant ainsdale though

  • its ok lol, soz if i sounded horribel puttin tha. did mean to be, i was just sayin. x

  • Lol oryt,,thanks for spottin it!!!

  • Actually the racecourse at Aintree is in not in Liverpool it's in Sefton, which is the same Borough as Southport and Ainsdale.

  • Aintree is in the city of Liverpool , which legally stretches as far as Switch Island at the intersection of the M62 and M58 .

Sefton is a Borough Council , which Aintree also falls within .

    The 2 aren't mutually exclusive .

  • luv it fab horse sikk video xxx

  • you were so beatiful rummy

  • beautiful vid! beautiful horse! rip red rum :) love ya buddy!

  • that was very lovelyy:).

    simply the very best!:).

ii have a breyer model of him:)

    its soo beautiful:).

    xx

  • Lovely video, the greatest horse

  • red rum = legendary horse tha me and my grandad loved

  • Great videao, many happy memories of Rummy, truely the word legend was never more fittingly used for man or beast.

Saw all his Grand National Victories on the TV. The third one was very emotioanl.Peter O'Sulliven's commentary as Rummmy approaches the line, 'hats off to Red Rum the cheers round Aintree youve never heard anything like it, Red rum wins the national", well Im gone. True then true now true forever.

    Rummy the people champion.

  • that picture when he wins his third!!!! amazing!! peoples faces !! humans who forgot their troubles and who they were, and had become!! thanks to a horse!! RED RUM.... the peoples horse.

  • 3rd time he did it Ginger walked him into the Fisherman's Rest pub, just up the road from the beach at Birkdale were he trained, to a roar from the locals, who'd backed him heavily! Not just a horse, the Best Horse! Go Rummie!

  • I loved Red rum I even sent polo mints to him when I was a little girl.such a beautiful horse and the best !

  • I love the picture of him with Dessie. It's almost like Dessie is bowing saying I am king now old boy but you're still my hero. Two of the most loved horses ever...people's champions.

    RIP both.

  • red rum looked so small compared to dessie, ime so glad they died of old age and not in slaughterhouses like some of the americans when they could'nt race anymore.

  • Sadly though that is where alot of UK horses go too. Many others suffer neglect once 'past their usefulness'.

I think some memebrs of mankind look to these proud animals for qualities that just does not exist in most human beings anymore - courage, character & charisma. We humans have all be reduced to faceless & spineless non-entities that abuse all that is around us...one day Mother Nature will ensure will all pay a price for our abuse.

  • Probably the most famous racehorse of all time. Man O' War is the other great.

  • Rummy was bred as a flat racer - but he was crap at this! He was a born steeplechaser and the greatest horse to ever walk this earth! I loved him and miss him to bits. A beautiful tribute - even though 'legend' is the right spelling. (Rummy wouldn't mind).

  • Beautiful video and a beautiful horse. Thanks for sharing. At least he had a long life and was loved. From the pictures, it looks like he had quite a personality! That was interesting that he walked in the sea before races. Any idea what incurable disease he had in his feet?

Funny how this song works in so many ways and is interpreted by the listener. Definitely a fitting way to express feelings.

  • yes, he was a wonderful horse with a huge heart.

he had a problem with his feet, a bit like laminitis or whatever, that couldnt be fixed, but the salty water and the sand was softer for his feet to train on and the salty sea water eased the pain.

  • I wish I would have known about him before I did my "Viva Forever" video. He seems to have quite a fanbase and would have been a good one to use since obviously, his memory lives on. I don't follow steeplechasing much. I cringe every time I see them jump and worry about them coming down wrong. But injuries can happen anywhere, anytime, on any surface. Just speaks volumes about how great horses are. They'll do anything we ask of them, all for our enjoyment.

  • he did hav quite a personality my dad looked after him when he finished his racing career and he said he was an amazing horse to know. i sat on him when i was 2 :) i cant remember it but we have photos somewere. :) miss u rummy

  • where is his statue?

  • well i think he has one at aintree

and i think he has another at the british racing stud too

  • Awesome Vid, Thanks for posting!! Red Rum was amazing!! Racehorses Rock!! x

  • this is great. thanks

  • he was bred in co killkenny ireland and the most amazing horse every my gan went to see him before she died she loved him

  • Wonderful tribute to Rummy. Thank you. Does anybody know the name of the background song and the artist?

  • When You're Gone by Avril Lavinge

  • and RIP red

  • aw i love this vid its going on my Video Log, Favorites and being rated 10/10 coz my grandad Loved Red Rum he was one of his Favorites.

ill show it too him (my grandad)

  • God bless . don.t no anything about horses or racing . I no REDRUM . That says it all .

  • Thank you that was lovely!

    RIP Rummy!!

  • legend

  • This video was moving and really touches anyone who is involved in Racing.

Its hard to say who has been the best horse in the UK but Red Rum is definatley my favourite along with Desert Orchid.

The determination both horses had to win was second to none.

    Good nite rummy

  • not 3:49 sorry 22 seconds lol i looked at the wrong time

  • lol he had so many sash's that its hard to tell :P

  • also the sash he has on at 3:49 is in my house

  • i love this horse.

my dad looked after him when he had finished racing and i sat on him when i was 2 years old.

he has to be one of the greats!

  • sleep well ol boy <3

  • best of No1 rummy

  • Very nice:)

We don't get much on chasing here in the US. It is nice to see some of the photos and clippings you have here.

Have you checked out the 1981 winner Aldaniti? He and Bob Champion have an amazing story.
