  • Duke Nalon drove one of the '39 three-liter Mercedes to the second fastest qualifying time at the 1947 Indy 500, but burned a piston and retired on lap 119. Chet Miller qualified the same car fifth fastest in 1948 and retired blowing oil on lap 108. All this without =any= help from the factory and all the stuff in the car labeled in German.
