I mean yearly average premium increases of 12 to 16 percent are forcing many businesses to drop employee coverage or demand that workers pay more. Universal heath care isn't meant to get rid of current insurance companies .By opening government run agencies, it sets up a fair competition to get those companies to lower prices, extend coverage, and prevent further corruption. The same jobs will be there + new government jobs will be created to handle the government-run agencies. Like in the U.K, if you can afford it, you may continue with your current insurance company, if you can't afford it, your still covered.
The 7 million number is probably obsolete, it was from the same study that supposedly showed 60 million. I looked at the study and they included people that at one time did not have insurance, but now do - the Dems lumped them all in the same pile to claim they were uninsured. It also included @ 15 million non-citizens, and @ 15 million people making at least $25K MORE than the median income. ( this is from memory, but I am trying to be as close as my memory will allow)

Think of it as if you and I were to open up a fruit stand, except you have to pay for my inventory of fruit. Who do you think will be better able to charge lower prices? Of course I would be able to cut my prices far more than you because I don't have to pay for my fruit - this is what the plan does to the insurance companies.

If the government wanted competition all they have to do is lift the restrictions against providing insurance across state lines. There are HUNDREDS of insurance companies out there that would LOVE to be able to compete in other states but the cost of crossing state lines is prohibitive to all but a few companies.

Part of the reason is simply the laws that are in place that force more and more companies to include "boutique" services (things most people do not need but which are very expensive (like fertility treatments)) In addition, the new treatments that we are discovering are in their introduction phase and are VERY expensive right now - the price will come down as they become more common - think VCR's.

@MonaLisaSmile08 A bit on the Health bill. The Dems ginned up a lot of resentment toward an industry that works very well for the vast majority of people. They flat out LIED about the number of Americans who were without coverage. The real figure was not 60 million as some Dem's claimed - it was far closer to 7 million. Still too many people, but the solution for 7 million is far different than the solution for 60 million. They also lied about the cost, who and what will be covered. (cont)

@MonaLisaSmile08 The truth is that the bill will STILL not cover roughly 5 million people ( from memory so please give me a bit of leeway), and it was NOT deficit neutral, as they claimed. They misrepresented what the "death panels" are and they literally demonized one of the few industries that was still growing and paying good wages. The bill will slowly kill this industry and those jobs will go away too. Just like the Dems did with the Auto industry, the steel, and textile industries.

Regardless though of the figure, many are defiantly not receiving the help they need. I also agree that the insurance industry provides jobs which is always good, however the multi-billion dollar insurance and drug industries are both becoming more crooked than the big American banks right now.(continued)

I mean yearly average premium increases of 12 to 16 percent are forcing many businesses to drop employee coverage or demand that workers pay more. The average share that workers pay for health insurance premiums has doubled since 2000. Basically the system we have now is just going to run Americans into bankruptcy, many actually are right now due to high medical bills. (cont.)

Universal heath care isn't meant to get rid of current insurance companies .By opening government run agencies, it sets up a fair competition to get those companies to lower prices, extend coverage, and prevent further corruption. The same jobs will be there + new government jobs will be created to handle the government-run agencies. Like in the U.K, if you can afford it, you may continue with your current insurance company, if you can't afford it, your still covered.

The 7 million number is probably obsolete, it was from the same study that supposedly showed 60 million. I looked at the study and they included people that at one time did not have insurance, but now do - the Dems lumped them all in the same pile to claim they were uninsured. It also included @ 15 million non-citizens, and @ 15 million people making at least $25K MORE than the median income. ( this is from memory, but I am trying to be as close as my memory will allow)

@MonaLisaSmile08 Government and competition are mutually exclusive. The government will be litterally charging the insurance companies to fund this "competition". Think of it as if you and I were to open up a fruit stand, except you have to pay for my inventory of fruit. Who do you think will be better able to charge lower prices? Of course I would be able to cut my prices far more than you because I don't have to pay for my fruit - this is what the plan does to the insurance companies.

If the government wanted competition all they have to do is lift the restrictions against providing insurance across state lines. There are HUNDREDS of insurance companies out there that would LOVE to be able to compete in other states but the cost of crossing state lines is prohibitive to all but a few companies.

One single body having a large majority of resources creates a monopoly, and monopolistic companies have zero incentive to lower prices, in fact, monopolies only raise their prices until they reach a price ceiling.

Part of the reason is simply the laws that are in place that force more and more companies to include "boutique" services (things most people do not need but which are very expensive (like fertility treatments)) In addition, the new treatments that we are discovering are in their introduction phase and are VERY expensive right now - the price will come down as they become more common - think VCR's.

@anger42 Moore does talk about the government officials who allowed the bailouts to happen. Actually he shines the spotlight on the democrats as the main reason why the original bailouts occurred. THEN he also lays blame on the high end executives at corporations for proposing the bills. I personally think that MOST representatives were pressured into voting for the bill, because originally they voted it down, then were told that America would surely crumble if the bill wasn't passed.
