I use a separate hi hat clutch. Sometimes upside down if I want to get it a little higher. Often I use another heavier splash (cutout ride bell) and create a mini hi hat on top of the main by using a felt on top of the main clutch, followed by the small bottom, then the small top on the clutch. Makes for some interesting effects.
