Thanks for posting. The orchestra is very good, and the film is hot, though for me, Mravisnsky's sound is better, as is budget-priced Barshai with the WDR orchestra. Bychkov is simply too rushed to my ears. Allegro NON TROPPO means just that, a clear warning against excess speed. The others get a more stark, bare sound by pacing it like a blasting, violent, unstoppable hideous machine.
sorry but after hearing mravinsky, this is like a high school kids picnic on the beach. mravinsky generates such tension and menace its almost unbearable
this is a moto perpetuum. it is very difficult because the strings have to keep a perfectly steady tempo. and to play it on trombones! i dont think the transition from strings to brass could have been any more unexpected! Go shostakovich!!!!
The videography is astounding! It makes the music come at you like a 3D movie! Even those that hate classical music would take the time to watch this (I hope) ! LOL
Takie tempo lubię. Skrzypce i trąbki tworzą tu niesamowite napięcie. Zbliżające się niebezpieczeństwo jest gdzies blisko ale ktoś jest bardziej przebiegły i nie da się złapać. Wydaję się mi że działają tu jakieś dwie przeciwstawne siły. Cudowne to wszystko.
The first trombone looks like Shostakovich!

How long ago was this? BTW, this is quite a work of dynamic orchestral cinematography.

@munegatame
I disagree. Shostakovich has got some of the most intense and best music in my own opinion.
Still, the Russians know how to write some bad ass orchestral pieces.. :D

It is a little bit to fast. Mravinski is the best.

I'm seeing Semyon Bychkov conduct Shostakoich's 11th at the BBC Proms in August. I'm weel excited, he seems a very good conducter.

Good Flugelhorn solo !
furzendesbrot 3 years ago
Flugelhorn???
That is a rotary(valve) trumpet ("Drehventil-Trompete" or "Deutsche Trompete") pitched in C made by Schagerl.
The player is Gabor Tarkövi, actually principal trumpet of the Berlin Philharmonic. In this case he plays as substitue with the WDR.
Michel037 2 years ago
Isn't that just a rotary trumpet?
