my doctor found a cyst on my overy that had doubled in size and caused me alot of pain over a three week period - and had me in for a CT, biopsy, and diagnoised as benign and removed withen 2 months, i live in a small town with one hospital, and I am thank ful for my Canadian healthcare cause in the US to do that I would have likely lost my car and my house paying medical bills......

A few small points. 1) Fraser Institute isn't a health organization, they are a right wing think tank ideologically opposed to Canadian healthcare. 2) You know Canadians who have left Canada for the US, therefore represent the very small minority and do not represent the Canadian health care system. 3) There is no master wait list in Canada. If you don't like one opinion, you go to another doctor of your choice. Oh, and "my choice" means having the means to have a choice, not pay by yourself.

If the US health care system is so great why are there so many who can't afford it and so many unnecessary deaths happening because money issues, hospital complications and LONG wait times happen. Insurance companies actually don't care whether you have cancer and only cover a small percentage of most costs with routine needs.
@Duszka The difference between the US and Canadian systems is that in the US people still get the care they need, even if they can't pay for it. In Canada, a long wait time is 3 years, here a long wait is 4 or 5 days. Complications happen anywhere, and even in Canada I've read in the news of operations on the wrong foot, etc. And why should insurance cover routine needs? Car insurance doesn't cover your oil change and tires.
@MediBid No, that isn't the difference. In the US you can get emergency care, but if you need a knee replacement you can't get one without proper insurance or cash. If you need to maintain a doctor for a heart condition, you can't do so without proper insurance or major cashflow. @bj615 Emergency room care is quick care, and no Canadian argues anything about the emergency care waiting times. It is the surgery waiting list that has become a problem. Or even an MRI just to find out if something is life-threatening or not. I know a Canadian doctor who has seen people off of a 14 month waiting list for an MRI only to find out they have something very serious that should have been treated 14 months ago.
@MediBid I know people in Canada that have gotten an MRI the same day for emergency, but as you've admitted we're not talking about emergency care. In Canada, it is the same as the US in that patients bear responsibility for seeking a second opinion, or third, or fourth. Are you aware people in the US can't afford MRI's and go without, and never get the chance to be placed on a waiting list? Patients in the US get denied care outright, and HMO's and PPO's still have wait lists for common surgery
@bj615 We should and do have government systems in place for people who can't afford an MRI, but medical care is really not as expensive as the media wants us to believe. An MRI isn't $2,000, it's usually about $600. $2,000 is the billing price for the insurance company and they never pay that rate. If we take charge of our own health, we'll see what the real prices are by asking first rather than just shutting our eyes, pulling the trigger, and waiting for the bill to arrive.

It is not as bad yet in Canada from what I can tell. In England it is far worse and people are dying because of the caps and severe rationing. Why do you think the administrative costs for administering health insurance policies is costing small businesses 25-30 percent of their cost and the administrative fees of Single payer is only 6-7 percent of the cost? Exactly, MRI can detect the disease TODAY. It wasn't used that way in the 80's and 90's. Yes, there were signs, which in retrospect were signs of Alzheimer's.
Of course there were MRI's in the 80's My mother had one after her stroke in 1989 within 12 hours here in Canada. What I said was that MRI's were not considered reliable for diagnosing Alzheimer's until the 21st century.

my doctor found a cyst on my overy that had doubled in size and caused me alot of pain over a three week period - and had me in for a CT, biopsy, and diagnoised as benign and removed withen 2 months, i live in a small town with one hospital, and I am thank ful for my Canadian healthcare cause in the US to do that I would have likely lost my car and my house paying medical bills......

A few small points. 1) Fraser Institute isn't a health organization, they are a right wing think tank ideologically opposed to Canadian healthcare. 2) You know Canadians who have left Canada for the US, therefore represent the very small minority and do not represent the Canadian health care system. 3) There is no master wait list in Canada. If you don't like one opinion, you go to another doctor of your choice. Oh, and "my choice" means having the means to have a choice, not pay by yourself.

Even the Canadian doctors are leaving the government run health care system because they know they can't give the care they want to give, so they come to the USA where they can treat people. Dr. Kurisko is a Canadian doc who used to have to be the one to triage the waiting list and it ate him up inside, so he moved.

If the US health care system is so great why are there so many who can't afford it and so many unnecessary deaths happening because money issues, hospital complications and LONG wait times happen. Insurance companies actually don't care whether you have cancer and only cover a small percentage of most costs with routine needs.

@Duszka The difference between the US and Canadian systems is that in the US people still get the care they need, even if they can't pay for it. In Canada, a long wait time is 3 years, here a long wait is 4 or 5 days. Complications happen anywhere, and even in Canada I've read in the news of operations on the wrong foot, etc. And why should insurance cover routine needs? Car insurance doesn't cover your oil change and tires.

@MediBid No, that isn't the difference. In the US you can get emergency care, but if you need a knee replacement you can't get one without proper insurance or cash. If you need to maintain a doctor for a heart condition, you can't do so without proper insurance or major cashflow. People in Canada don't wait years for treatment, this is just lies put out with no purpose at all. This isn't even about defending the US system, it is outright lies about the Canadian system.

Insurance should be for the unexpected, like major surgery, not for a sniffle. If we used health insurance like auto insurance and stopped trying to use it for routine stuff, health insurance would be much more affordable for everyone.

Homeowners insurance doesn't pay for a new roof when the old one wears out. It pays for the emergencies and accidents, like car insurance. Health insurance should be treated like any other insurance policy if we want to see the rates drop.

@MadHabber93 No, insurance absolutely SHOULD pay for a new heart, that is an unexpected emergency situation, but when we use health insurance to pay for a dental cleaning that we know we get every 6 months and is usually about $60, it is abusive to the system and drives the price on insurance up. I agree that we need some changes to our health insurance system in the US, but I don't think we need to move in the same direction as Canada where everything is paid for by a single payer.

@bj615 Emergency room care is quick care, and no Canadian argues anything about the emergency care waiting times. It is the surgery waiting list that has become a problem. Or even an MRI just to find out if something is life-threatening or not. I know a Canadian doctor who has seen people off of a 14 month waiting list for an MRI only to find out they have something very serious that should have been treated 14 months ago.

@MediBid I know people in Canada that have gotten an MRI the same day for emergency, but as you've admitted we're not talking about emergency care. In Canada, it is the same as the US in that patients bear responsibility for seeking a second opinion, or third, or fourth. Are you aware people in the US can't afford MRI's and go without, and never get the chance to be placed on a waiting list? Patients in the US get denied care outright, and HMO's and PPO's still have wait lists for common surgery

@bj615 We should and do have government systems in place for people who can't afford an MRI, but medical care is really not as expensive as the media wants us to believe. An MRI isn't $2,000, it's usually about $600. $2,000 is the billing price for the insurance company and they never pay that rate. If we take charge of our own health, we'll see what the real prices are by asking first rather than just shutting our eyes, pulling the trigger, and waiting for the bill to arrive.

I am an RN so that is where I get my info. The poor already get care so our systenm is fair. Single payer is not the only way and you are right about caps which ultimately result in rationing. It is not as bad yet in Canada from what I can tell. In England it is far worse and people are dying because of the caps and severe rationing. We have problems but it doesn't justifying Obamacare which Obama and Congress have opted out of. If it is so great, why don't they want it for themselves?

Why do you think the administrative costs for administering health insurance policies is costing small businesses 25-30 percent of their cost and the administrative fees of Single payer is only 6-7 percent of the cost? Free markets are great but it is not good for everything,. The Post Office has been heavily subsidized by the taxpayers for decades. The lost revenue from use of the internet is just one more stress on it but they are grossly inefficient and you cannot blame the the whole mess on that.
There are many reasons for the high cost of health care in the USA. We do tons of research and are pioneers of innovation which does not come cheap. Frivolous lawsuits and defensive medicine also add to it. Obamacare addresses none of the real problems.

One fix would be to charge 1 dollar per regular stamp, but what would the outcry be then? As far as the Prime Minister, my guess is he would see someone probably fairly quickly, but if they determined it was a benign cyst not affecting his vision they would probably say its no problem to wait. Which its not if you read up about those kind of cysts. If it was affecting his vision, probably would have it removed quickly. I'm just guessing here though.

Sorry, Reagan inherited Carter's economic policies, that's why reagan carried 44 states in 1980. But by 1984 Reagan fully reversed Carter's policy and unemployment dropped to 2.2% and inflation was cut in half.
