I imagine they did not use a destruct line, where you would do a controlled explosion of the rocket before it reached a population center. Essentially this is extremely unlikely to happen in America.
This is the fundamental difference in governments. Rocket fails in America, it's a national tragedy and changes everything. Rocket fails in China AND it blows up an entire village, oh well fuck you. Shouldn't have parked your village next to our rocket.
Great to see the usual idiots making the jokes. It must feel good to be daft cunts or being arrogant enough to make puns knowing that 500 people lost their lives in what is being viewed.
A sense of humor can only be limited to humor when it is applied to something that is not of this much significance. Are there not enough things in the world to laugh at?. Me not laughing at 500 people dying means I have no sense of humor?
Well done sir for your flawed logic.
You cannot laugh at everything in the world. That is the real problem.
@dropkick45 Because rockets are still difficult to build and launch. Look for the US failures or the EAS failures, especially the first Arianne V.
I don't think there will ever be a perfect solution (Soyuz is the nearest, statistically speaking). It doesn't matter how good you are, sooner or later something goes wrong.
To be fair, that's what China looks like anyway: burnt out buildings and fields. I've been to both China and Tibet and there are some beautiful places, but most look like this.
Go to this location in Google Maps 102.0371E, 28.233N and check the satellite view. Move the map around a bit until you find the launch pad (NNW)Yes; there are small population centres around the launch facility but it is not "a populated area".
I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37" HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use PennyJump. com
Did the range-safety destruct malfunction or what? Did the range-safety officer decide that it was more desirable for the rocket to exit the launch area after its launch became an obvious failure?
@deicidalRuffian Because they've only ever designed them to burn villages or light up as fireworks. This rocket worked exactly like it's predecessors.
The damn thing didn't even get off the launch pad before it started derping.
@bennytrue "Intelsat 708 was a telecommunications satellite built by the American company Space Systems/Loral intended to be launched into a geostationary orbit and operated by Intelsat."
@bennytrue Made in China, in 1996. Since then, China has been successful in launching their spacecraft. I really shouldn't be leaving reasonable or sensible comments on here though, after all this is YouTube.
In the original newscast the live broadcast was cut around 0:29 and the Chinese never released a damage report. Later they claimed that only 6 people were killed. Does anybody know when this full video was released?
I remember watching the live broadcast on CCTV (PRC gov't TV). As soon as the rocket exploded, they immediately switched to some other news without mentioning the incident for the rest of the evening. It's like they thought they could hide the embarrassment even though millions of people witnessed it live. The stupidity of the PRC gov't is amazing!
@gupsphoo I thought the launch took place at bout midnight or later... I could be wrong about that. It doesn't mean there wasn't any news on at that time but hey, just saying...
@Camerameister I'm pretty sure CCTV aired it live around dinner time during their regular news program. I think they specifically chose that time so the entire nation could proudly witness their "achievement".
@TheKeitasan Yeah, okay. My apologies. The rockets are fine but the political system not so good! We agree. There are just a lot of people on this thread who seem desperate to make a link between what they perceive as poor quality and the Chinese Communist Party, which does not always give an accurate assessment. In fact, all it does is cover up a lack of awareness of the facts of the case.
I read about this incident for the first time today. I'm glad the PRC is contributing so much to our understanding of rockets, but I don't get why they'd launch a rocket, especially one so big, nearby such a well populated area. Why?
@LUOBOC Of course not, I'm aware that there are certain geographic limitations in that particular region. The site was placed too close to such a city....it should have been placed between Bazhong and Nanchong (at least 40mi from civilization.
ok,may you beleived the rocket speed is so rapid and can hit the cloest city in 22 second. indeed, it just hit the building in the space base. ╮(╯▽╰)╭
however, i can realize you worry about that. i read some reports about the rocket fragment hit citizin building but fortunately no people were killed (of course, you can refuse to beleive what i said)

I'm interested in this figure. The CIA estimated around 200 casualties and on that basis, yours is the only figure I've read which sounds reasonable.
