Why I'd rather have Reed over Polamalu. Reed can bait a great QB into bad decision and Polomalu only punishes bad decisions. If a QB puts a ball in to the right spot and the receiver doesn't drop a pass, Polamalu isn't a factor. Tim Tebow can tell you that much.

The reason Troy can sometimes be so-so in coverage is because he's more of a punishing, hard-hitter safety. Ed's more of a coverage safety that catches like a wide receiver and takes it to the house. That's not saying Troy can't catch or Ed can't make you feel like you got hit by a bus, which of course they can, but the difference is in play style.

But that second quarter, that was one of the ugliest Steeler quarters I'd ever seen. Not only was it a 20-6 hole but it could have been much worse. Steeler offense since 2007 has done good against teams that are inconsistent against the run and so-so against everyone else. Mendenhall, Redman, Dwyer, and Clay could be great if the run block was better. And that play in overtime? Not sure WHAT happened to the defense, but seeing that play was like a baseball in the nuts.
@Ludichris8531 Some of the injuries happened this year, so that was part of it. Troy was pretty good for 2010. But this year? Not so much. Last year was just an ugly year due to injuries. Injuries happen, but they sure do ruin a team fast. Reason run stop was failing at the end was that the entire starting D-Line had to be replaced. I will admit that the Steeler offense looked good in the second half, not sure how they found that spark. When the D had more time to rest, they did a little better.
However, the real problem isn't the defense. It's the offense. The reason the D (including Troy) is getting torched so much the past few years is due to being on the field most of the game, especially the fourth quarter. When your offense is built to pass on every down, especially with a banged up QB (Batch should've been put in for the Denver game IMO), that's not a winning formula. Biggest thing that should be focused on going into 2012 is the O-Line's run blocking.
@Ludichris8531 Troy's been battling injuries the past couple years, so that's a big part of why he's not the same as he has been. However, myself and other Steeler fans are hoping that the offseason gives him time to get back to full form. Troy didn't really get "exposed" though because it's hard to be the only guy in the secondary with any real competence. Ike Taylor and Ryan Clark are inconsistent, but the defense is built to hold teams under 100 yards rushing but allow 300 yards passing.

Why I'd rather have Reed over Polamalu. Reed can bait a great QB into bad decision and Polomalu only punishes bad decisions. If a QB puts a ball in to the right spot and the receiver doesn't drop a pass, Polamalu isn't a factor. Tim Tebow can tell you that much.

@Ludichris8531 Ed Reed and Troy Polamolu have different play styles so it's kind of hard to compare them. The reason Troy can sometimes be so-so in coverage is because he's more of a punishing, hard-hitter safety. Ed's more of a coverage safety that catches like a wide receiver and takes it to the house. That's not saying Troy can't catch or Ed can't make you feel like you got hit by a bus, which of course they can, but the difference is in play style.

But that second quarter, that was one of the ugliest Steeler quarters I'd ever seen. Not only was it a 20-6 hole but it could have been much worse. Steeler offense since 2007 has done good against teams that are inconsistent against the run and so-so against everyone else. Mendenhall, Redman, Dwyer, and Clay could be great if the run block was better. And that play in overtime? Not sure WHAT happened to the defense, but seeing that play was like a baseball in the nuts.

@Ludichris8531 Some of the injuries happened this year, so that was part of it. Troy was pretty good for 2010. But this year? Not so much. Last year was just an ugly year due to injuries. Injuries happen, but they sure do ruin a team fast. Reason run stop was failing at the end was that the entire starting D-Line had to be replaced. I will admit that the Steeler offense looked good in the second half, not sure how they found that spark. When the D had more time to rest, they did a little better.

However, the real problem isn't the defense. It's the offense. The reason the D (including Troy) is getting torched so much the past few years is due to being on the field most of the game, especially the fourth quarter. When your offense is built to pass on every down, especially with a banged up QB (Batch should've been put in for the Denver game IMO), that's not a winning formula. Biggest thing that should be focused on going into 2012 is the O-Line's run blocking.

@Ludichris8531 Troy's been battling injuries the past couple years, so that's a big part of why he's not the same as he has been. However, myself and other Steeler fans are hoping that the offseason gives him time to get back to full form. Troy didn't really get "exposed" though because it's hard to be the only guy in the secondary with any real competence. Ike Taylor and Ryan Clark are inconsistent, but the defense is built to hold teams under 100 yards rushing but allow 300 yards passing.
