This video is a microcosm of the worst of the internet. Any idiot can make a video and pretend to be an expert on something he has no business talking about. Had we not seen him almost split his head open, I'm sure a lot of people would have taken is advice.
Lucky the clothes line didn't break on the head side. great idea. an inexpensive strong cord to use is 550 paracord aka parachute cord with the 7 inner strands. Thanks for sharing!
Clothesline rope can actually hold a hammock up but you will need to loop it several times to relieve the force of tension. My father, some Home Depot employee, and I were discussing this today when I went to buy rope for my own hammock. However, just to put my mind at ease, I ended up getting a heavier rope. Also, apparently cotton rope is unavailable at Home Depot (or mine anyway.)
Good tutorial and Bre, you're freaking adorable! :D
imagine the hammock as a particle. Assume he weighs.... 50kilos? probably more ut 50 is a nice number. now gravity acts at a rate of 9.8m/s^2. 490N. now tension is the force applied to the two hammock ropes. I wouldn't bother doing the math and get a rope thats rated for at least 500N if not more. Could of used paracord. Surprised he didn't.
wow the info was really great but the best part was the epic fail and "...ow" I laughed pretty hard and had to watch that scene over again three more times :D kool.
I don't think it would bother the police too much if it was just one guy, but when there was a huge group of people...that's when they get worried. BECAUSE PEOPLE ON HAMMOCKS REVOLT. Obviously.
Nice, im a do-it-yourselfer and an outdoors enthusiast, and have been looking for a hammock to take on long biking/camping trips...for some reason i never thought to make my own..and that looks pretty damn comfy..THAAAAANX 5/5
Well I coulda told ya that cotton clothes line cord was a poor choice. Next time to your testing over surfaces other than concrete. Anyway you showed some class by not editing out the failure.
DONT DONT DONT Tie knots in your Hammock line, when you lay in the Hammock the knots tighten to the point where you can't untie them. Instead tie a cheap carabiener to the ends and creat a loop system. Then unhook when done.
Hey Bre, it's unbelievable, I asked threadbanger to show how to make a hammock back in spring and it was plussed like twenty times and threadbanger replied to that comment with "We'll definitely do this in one of our next shows" and they never did. So I'm so happy that you do it now, I absolutely wanted to know how to do one and I'm convinced that this video'll get a lot of hits. Thank you!
When I was in Merida in Mexico (the hammock capital of the world) I was told that you shouldn't sleep in a hammock with your body exactly parallel with the ropes because the dip in your back will cause back-pain. Instead, you should sleep with your body angled slightly, so, for example, your head rests close to the left edge of the hammock and your butt rests closer to the right edge. Of course, you'd probably need a bigger hammock to accomplish this comfortably. Thanks for the vid
Thanks for taking one for the team Bre.... I love how you guys tied them up on the trees.... Well I guess for the short time they were up, the looked nice... lol
I am thinking if you hook your hammock up to a tree and wrap the rope around the trunk at a 'y' juncture with a branch to keep the rope from sliding downward, you could use sections of old garden hose to put the rope in to help keep it from fraying or messing up the tree. (Did that make sense?)

the average weight that a hammocks rope has to hold is 600 pounds thanks to some weird math.

Yeah I was going to say, until the end, wouldn't police come by and make you take them down?
(Though when you think about it - why would they - you're allowed to lay on blankets outside but not a hammock? Hm!)

If you tie the rope securely to a big diaper pin, you can feed it through the fabric much easier...
