Thanks for your honesty, and taking time to do your videos. I am just getting started in lighting events and gathering my lights, cables, etc. etc. and look forward to looking at your videos every chance I get. Like you said, it well worth the trouble if you can come away from a video or event with a nugget you can use.
I get that nugget from every video I watch of yours.
Thanks for all your videos, I have been DJing for about 11 years now and I use to not worry about lights I just worried about the sound. About a year ago I decided I needed more lights to start doing school dances and now I can't stop thinking about what lights I want to buy next!
I know what you mean when it comes to talking, I stumble all the time, its mainly because I have tourettes syndrome. Its mostly twitch but when I am talking to a small or big crowd, I get nervous. It only takes practice. I have learned some stuff from experience too. All you have to do is remember what you did and how to handle it. I started off with two CD players and a Home 300W amp with two big stand up speakers from the early 90's. I still use the sound system but I upgraded to a laptop.
Mike I think you hit the nail on the head towards the end of your video. So many DJs take a selfish attitude or distance themselves from other vendors and the venue and little do they realize they're passing up such a great opportunity. I can't tell you how many tables I've broken down or chairs cleared to help my clients and vendors...and venues notice that and are far more likely to refer a team player.
Thanks for another great video. Your work is always inspirational!
the same vids over and over. I agree with him that it does get repetitive. That's part of the reason why I haven't done as many vids lately. Other than being busier too, I don't want to keep posting the same thing. But that's just me and I know we all have our own ideas. I do have some new stuff I need to put up but it is similar to other people's vids so I'll mainly do it for my clients to see that I do the same thing personally. With the exception of a few other things of course.
And you know you're great and you do some really great stuff but after I've seen all your uplighting and other vids, I don't find much difference anymore. The H2O light effect was nice but that was about the only thing that's stood out in my mind over the last few vids you've done. Of course you're going to keep doing what you're doing but just thought I would mention that. I hope you don't take that wrong but I though DJbo made some good sense by saying that he wasn't going to keep posting..
has mentioned something that I'm going to take to heart that I would pass on to you as well that I thought made sense. He mentioned how he has done a lot of videos showing his uplighting and other shows but is probably not going to do so many because it was becoming repetitive with doing "basically" the same uplighting and other lighting but just a different venue. So, the videos started to look very similar. I've noticed this with yours. Not trying to "pick" on ya, cause I know you're great
Hey, I've talked to you on the phone (thanks for being kind enough to call awhile back) and like (love) your vids. I recommend them all the time. The only querk I would have is the length of the vid. I myself am trying to minimize the length of my vids to keep the attention towards them. I know I'm not telling you something you don't already know because you're intelligent but I would rather see you keep them to less than 5 or 6 minutes. But that's just me. Also, DJbo....
Hey Mikey, Thanks for the "nugget"! I used to help out the venues all the time when I was first starting out. I forgot how much that really like that. "Most other jock don't do that" they used to say all the time. It also looks good for our profession, It say that we are not above the other at the venue, like the wait staff or kitchen help. Those folks also book DJs and if we work with them and help than they will want to use our services and reccomd us. I needed to remember that! Thx! Donny D.
i think from the last gig log my only suggestions would be if you can vary up the Mc intros etc not easy because we all get use to what is comfortable. And maybe less of the heart projections they can look a bit disney ? Just my personal view very difficult to critque someone elses show. That venue would be awkward because the Dj booth is located quite a distance from the dance floor.
Lastly thank you for the huge amount effort you put in. I started writing this about 4 minutes in :)
Thanks for sharing this Mike, at the end day we are only human so mistakes happen. i think we are all trying to do our best and perfect what we do. The other thing about videos is that we are use to polished productions. The expectations for a Dj to produce a polished gig log is very difficult unless you train in that skill and use a videographer. i think your vids are great because they are educational.
hi mm great video personally i dont think your videos are 2 long if you like watching the person and the advice and video content help us i dont care how long they are i will watch the whole thing keep up the great work peace :-)
man even if you did a 1 hour video id still watch every minute of it. because i have learned a lot from your videos. i take everything you say ass good advice. i would like for you to look at some of my videos and tell me what you think. Thanks a lot mikey mike.
This is some great advice! Keep it up and keep the vids coming! You should make a video on some of the different games you do while djing. -Thanks and Keep It Real
Hey Mike, thanks for the kind words but I've played some "stinkers" too. This past Saturday, I played a mixed ethnic wedding for 80 people that sucked but I haven't been filming logs lately, otherwise, I'd show it, packed dance floor or not. Like you, I believe that I'm always learning and I try to get better at every gig. Like you, I'm trying to put on the best show I can and like you.
I think you're fricking AWESOME and you're a genuinely nice guy too!
@vinnievegas2000 Thank you Mr Vegas!!! Keep up the great work. I know its hard to do what we do but I do love it as Im sure you do ...I need to give you a call and chat again I love to hear what you have to offer
love the coment about dont back stab i tell you talking about another DJ is like talking bout your woman no matter how far away you are they will here about it :-)
your vids have helped me alot and i thank you i came away from the game in the 90's and returning last year i had a steep lurning curve and between you the BSR and J you made the curve seem alot less steep
Hey Mikey Mike, I needed this video today, thank you. Probably more for the pep talk than anything. Had a tough weekend. All went well, clients were all happy, but wasn't satisfied with my own performance for certain parts, if that makes sense. Needed to remember to step back, and focus on positive improvement, not just what I felt I didn't do well enough. Thanks for the vid man :)
i also need some tips on lighting, i have a controller, so i just improvice for every song. but i really want a intelligent light can you please make a video on lighting only
hey MM this vlog was really helpful to me i am a dj starting out i have the basic DJ setup i have a behringer mixer i have 2 yamaha 832's and just invested in 2 mushroom lights and to chauvet pinspot 360's. i love watching you guys DJ (you, briansredd, DJ bo, etc..)
i DJ little party's around my nieghborhood for like $5 an hour, but i really want to start doing school dances and gigs like that do u have any advice for a DJ like me starting out? thanks
Thank you for doing a video like this - I got some really great pointers from your video!
Please keep them coming!
BTW, if you put or any of you put up a 4 hour long video I would watch start to finish - I can always find something useful out of any videos you guys put up!
Hey Mikey Mike, I want to add one way to drum up business, I camp at a trailer Park now the Park doesnt have a lot of $ but I suggested doing a 50's & 60's dance for the park, i did it for $100 (paid for my gas) reason I did it is I knew the park wouldnt pay to have this event but the event was packed went extrememly well, with over 200 campers at this park guess whos name comes up everytime one of these campers has a wedding or anniversary or any function I was off that night anyway.
oh and one more thing since i DID watch the whole thing of what you had to say. i don't friend people up if they don't have posts or aren't contributing to the youtube dj community. you know the type. on youtube since 2006 but no posts, no pic, and no profile! that usually means that they are trolling out here with 10 different accounts, and i really don't need that kind of person in my network!

"Still be shhhh....crappy!" ha! i agree with you. perfect practice makes perfect and it ain't got shhh....crap to do with how long you've done it. i hate the djs that talk too much. hint - you don't need to announce every song!
I almost never watch videos over 10mins because I never have time. But I highly enjoyed this Vlog. And you had some great points. I'm now at the point where I want to quit doing videos, due to lack of comments & views. I get 15-20 subs a week, but never see comments/views increase. Any suggestions?
Hay Mike, just had an idea for your lighting set up... at your school discos etc instead of doi uplighting use the par cans as washes n the crowd etc, but say hook 10 pars on each trussing post at different angles, then run them on 2 channels so some go one colour others go other, that way would have a much bigger impact on the crowd dancing, espically on a strobe effect... just an idea :)
Hey Mikey Mike, have you considered plugging a cable from your mixer to your camera mic input? it might help with more clarity to video recording because your not using a microphone to record sound. just an idea i think atm you have it sorted but yeah just an idea for you or some other dj
