Hey man contest is almost over and i think you still got the best solo in my opinion. Anyways i was gonna enter but the phone video thing didnt work out in the end. So i recorded an audio of the solo i came up with. It would be great if you could check it out and critique it a bit and let me know some areas i could improve in. Thanks.
I got a question for you man. Now iv been trying to come up with a solo for this backing track. But i seem to get stuck on the E note, what i mean is alot of my licks start on the E and end on the E and it all start to sound the same. What other notes can i use in an E dorian setting to keep it fresh?
@shaqdaddy11 Good question man, I'll do my best to explain it... I like working with chord tones (which are the notes that build the chord you are playing over), so since this is a backing track that starts inE Dorian, the E chord would be of a minor quality, an E minor chord... The notes that build E minor are E, B & G.... So any of those would fit well to start or end a phrase (& its worth noting that all these notes are in the E Minor Pentatonic scale)... give it a shot man
@daveireland27 Oh man stupid me lol Iv watched the marty friedman melodic controll video so many times where he talks about chord tones (yet i totally blanked out on it lol). Thanks man thats a big help. Also iv see some of the lessons you did man. THose were great, you should do some more lesson videos for guitar noobs like myself.
@shaqdaddy11 I figured I'd pitch in :). E Dorian consists of E, F#, G, A, B, C#, D, and then the pattern starts over. The specific flavor note to me is the C# because it is unique to Dorian. This note doesn't occur in any of the other minor scales in the church modes. I agree with daveireland27 that the F# can also be used, but emphasize the C# note. E minor pentatonic with an included C# would also work ;). You could also try limiting yourself to only E, G, A, and C# notes.
@udsahn Sorry, I meant E, G, B, and C#. My mistake really. This is what would be called in theory an E minor triad (E, G, B notes) with an added Major 6th interval (The C# note). Hope it helps never-the-less and have fun soloing! :)
@udsahn Thanks alot man. My biggest issue when trying to construct solos is running myself into a wall. What i mean is ill come up with a lick and the lick will sounds good. But then where that lick ends after that i just seem to hit a brick wall. Its like if i end the lick on the E note, then where can i start the next lick from. That is the current problem i often face is just running into dead ends.
@shaqdaddy11 I have the same issue sometimes :). If that's the case, then probably an idea you could work (it did for me) is to try and play something still in key, but in a different position. For instance, rather than playing in an E Dorian, you could also try out F# Phrygian or B Aolean as they are both relative to E Dorian (Both are minor. You could play minor pentatonic with roots in E, F#, or B too). These are also in the key of the backing track, so no worries there. Give it a try :).
@shaqdaddy11 I've got just the thing that just popped up from my subscriptions that should help you, but give you the idea in a visual way :). He talks about the exact same thing I mentioned earlier. Search for 'Modes and pentatonic scales wallimann' and watch the first video from David Wallimann on this topic :). I hope it helps!! Have fun jamming! :)
@daveireland27 ...yup bff's again, in vicar st, prob one of the best JS gig's he's done setlist was awsome, prob see him over in SF in Jan too 8) ..he's a great guy
I think you should try and do like some Guthrie Govan stuff, like going off by half-step when playing a scale, when the tempo is prone to a drum fill(there's video in wallimann's channel about it~) and you could also try to use ~pauses~ to enhance your phases, short pauses or maybe note-skipping, so to speak.
These are just ideias because... I think fusion is based on all that rhythmic game, not only fluid runs you know?
Very nice one, man. I loved your sound, great exhibition of skills balanced by matching the melody perfectly.

@shaqdaddy11 Also, to bring out the "Dorian Flavour" of the mode, try throwing in an F# & C#... Hope that helps man
