Sanders was the most exciting, but NOT the best... period. For all of the exciting runs he made,he cost his team just as much trying to make something out of nothing, instead of taking the sure short yardage.
@JohnnyV123 yes, barry sanders constantly put his team in 2nd and long / 3rd and long situations. Sure, he had a lot of long runs, and his positives far outweighed his negatives, but Barry Sanders, at the end of the day, was an undisciplined back who resisted running where the plays were designed to be run. He'd pass up holes in search of the breakaway gain. That running style wouldn't have worked in Dallas. Great runner, but not the greatest running back.
@earthshine2k ... Agreed. Too many kids watch a highlight film and think Barry ran for 80 yards on every play. The truth is he would have one long run each game. His other twenty carries would be minus 1 yard, gain 1 yard, minus 5 yards, gain 2 yards, etc.
I was at this game my freshman year. Last second kick to win it. What an amazing experience in my first trip to Tiger Stadium to beat LSU with 1 second on the clock.
Coach Galen Hall got fired the next day, so that killed the buzz on the ride back to Gainesville.
@Caladesi143 barry didnt play as long and nearly broke all his records. and as far as college goes he owns the only one ever coming close to his rushing yards was i think kevin smith at ucf but he hasnt done anything in the nfl. barry would say that because he did deserve that and emmit wouldve said the same thing, emmit said im glad barry quit when he did because he knew barry would break his records.
I wish LSU would wear their PURPLE UNI's all the time, they are so much cooler than the white jerseys. Good Offensive Line or Not, you still need to be a good runner!
The florda O-line was unreliable at best. He used to find his own holes, His superb vision made a lot of runs in collage look planed when they weren't. He used to say "I can see the defense before the ball was snapped and know where the hole was going to be even if that isn't the way the play was drawn up. Watch the video again he did NOT run through a Designed hole. Great vision not the line.
Don't forget high school too! He ran for over 8,000 yards at Escambia High which, at the time, was second best EVER in the nation. I guess that "great O-Line" has just been following around Emmitt his whole life. I heard they taught him some dance moves too for Dancing With The Stars. Only reason he won that as well. His line.
Really??? High school - 2nd most yards ever in American high school football by a player (at the time). College - finished with 58 Florida school records. NFL - finished with career rushing yards record and career rushing TD's record.
All because of blocking? Even if it was, I'll take Emmitt with a great O-line over anyone else with a bad O-line. You play as a team. You really can't EVER separate a player's success from his team, whether it be Emmitt, Brady, Montana, Rice, Marino, Elway, etc.
while it was a good run because he obviously changed which gap to run through because of where the defenders and the blockers were at, this really isn't that impressive of a run. any current starter in the NFL could do this
don't forget he's the worst NFL analyst of all time. " I think if they can run it good, and pass it good, and then come up with some interceptions on defense, I think they can win the game"
emmitt smith just plain gets it done nothing too fancy but he does have some great highlights . you right barry wasnt even the best goaline back on his team . not so great . not to mention his most negative yards in nfl history . GO# 22
And to think the Cowboys ALMOST didn't draft Emmitt...
I don't know why Barry didn't just tell the Lions to trade him. Nobody would've thought less of him. Plenty of guys get sick of losing and tell their teams they want to be traded to a team that wants to win.
Barry wasnt raised like that..he never once celebrated after scoring a touchdown..just scored and gave the ball to the ref..Barry Sanders had 15,000 plus yards in 10 years..were talking 20,000 if he had been picked up by som1 like Dallas..
Barry Sanders career = closest thing a Detroit fan can come close to a Super Bowl. That's why they are commenting on all Emmitt clips on YouTube about "Barry this and Barry that". Get some new material. What a pathetic franchise history. Even Sanders decided to just retire when he still had a few good years left in him rather than play for that sorry ass team.
Those Barry fanboys are just bitter that Emmitt is the league's all-time leading rusher, when Barry QUIT on that achievement...not to mention the fact that Barry has ZERO Super Bowl rings! So let those Lions fans mope and grope about Emmitt "stealing" the all-time rushing record from Barry Sanders, and let them play that, "but we beat you in the playoffs in 91" card, or the "we invented Thanksgiving football" card. We have what matters, they don't!
You think Emmitt didnt respect Walter? Walter made Emmitt godfather to his son Jarett. He TOLD Emmitt that he wanted him to break it.Barry was more talented but Emmitt had heart and determination and had to work for so much that you cant help but respect what he did. You may not think he is the best. You dont have to but he never quits until he has achieved his goals.
What? Emmit still has records not broken. And don't give me that "but barry retired early" crap. Emmit STAYED, he had the heart to go on. He is in the top 3 RB of all time. Jim Brown and Payton were definately better, but the others, not so much. OK atleast to 5, but not to call him legendary, is just plain dumb.
But yet he got over 1,000 yards 10 straight years. Only Barry and Emmitt did that. Emmitt also had some sick ass jukes to go alone with his great vision. Emmitt still holds NCAA records as a Gator.
exactly finally someone is speaking some common sense if emmitt wasn't so good why did he set records in high school, college, and earn the king of all rushing tittle of them all. "yeah because he had better line then barry" give me a break
He was all Florida had on offense that year.

There were many games where Detroit would give Barry the ball 18 times total. Couldn't figure out why.
Green Bay had a shot at drafting Barry but instead went for Tony Mandarich.
