  • lou the master of the quote knockout.boy does this man swing.this thing goes like the clappers.nice bass an drums bye bye bop bird.many thanks

  • Wow, like tribute to 'Trane @ 1 min

  • 1:10 - 1:18 Alexander Borodin - Prince Igor :)

  • top 10 alto sax jazz musicians: 1)Adderley 2)Stitt 3)Konitz 4)McLean 5)Woods 6)Donaldson 7)Gryce 8)Desmond 9)Moody 10)Shank (crud i hate not including Pepper somewhere, how about 5.5?)

    _________

Charlie Parker is far too superior to any of these to include in a vulgar "list." Like trying to compare a fine wine to an health enhancing herbal tea, just categorically different bread of life food stuffs.

Praise the Lord for us having them all!

  • @pvelectric

The wine is better, as long as it is a fine Chablis.

Chablis is way better than Adderley, but for myself, I prefer German writer Hermann Hesse.

  • @japphan i was being literate. i prefer gallons of the cheapest wine i can find, then at high enough volume everything sounds great. mescaline is superior to booze (better drunk, no hangover, but that's why the governments would never allow the current income streams to be offended), but it's illegal. any drug which might promote peace over war and violence no government will ever support.

this Hermann Hesse guy talk about these subjects? Charles Bukowski does.

  • @pvelectric

    AMEN Brother... AMEN

  • My top five favorite Alto Sax players: 1. Cannonball Adderley, 2. Sonny Stitt, 3. Jackie McLean 4. Vincent Herring 5. Lou Donaldson

  • What is wrong with Phil Woods? I think he could replace someone in your top 5?

  • I love Phil Woods. I've even played with him once. he's just not on my top 5 list. If I had a top 10 list, it would continue as: 6. Charlie Parker 7. Kenny Garrett, 8. Phil Woods 8. Richie Cole and 10. Sonny Fortune and John Handy (Tied)

  • I think just out of respect you need to replace Vincent Herring with Phil Woods.

Vincent Herring has not played enough years. Vincent is good but doesn't come close to the many great years of Phil Woods performances.

  • When 'anyone' gets on a top ten list, that alone shows that they are excellent. The respect is certainly there for Phil Woods because he made the top 10.

  • Yeah not heard much anymore, but so beautiful.

I just love Horace Parlan as usual.

Reminds me when he played with Dexter Gordon

Thanks Pascal for this wonderful track.

    Denis

  • yeah man!! this is miles's arrangement

  • Strange, one doesn´t hear this kind of music on any major jazz festivals anymore

  • if Lou wanted to go complex , he'd complex your arse.

  • When I was on the road with him. Whikle warming up ,he starts playing Coltrane types of vocab. licks along with some music that was being played while we were sitting up. I told him, you should have played tenor. He said,"nope".

  • ...just my opinion... not since Charlie Parker has there ever been a better alto saxophonist. Such ease and feeling. He makes it look easy, but it's very complex.

  • Not even Sonny Stitt ?....

  • You got me there. Maybe a tie.

  • How about Cannonball ?

  • maximum respect for the amazing Parlan

  • thats not John Riley on drums is it?

  • He IS John Riley

  • Very humerous as a person. "no fusion or confusion"

  • Lou Donaldson Rocks!!!!

  • man, the things parlan can do, even with his right hand being partially crippled he can make up for it amazingly with his left hand

  • Lou is incredible.

  • 1:44-1:49 is the tune "Arkansas Traveler"

  • Why play it different?

  • He gives a nod to "Stranger in Paradise".

    Coool.

  • I have all Mr. Donaldson's cd's. What a great performer. Thanks for posting this. I just love to see my idols performance live!

  • wonderful vid

  • The attitude to playing a jazz tune is great and makes you downright happy!

  • @221620082

There is no better music than JAZZ... The music hits the soul when interpreted my cats like Papa Lou, Horace P., Wayne D., John R., etc, etc...

    Totally awesome...

  • Thank you so much for posting

  • It IS Horace Parlan. Who said it was Silver?

  • That doesn't look or sound like Horace Silver! I say it's Horace Parlan.

  • This may be the most swinging version of this classic tune.

  • Beautiful. Lou is brilliant, as is Horace. Two real originals.

  • I agree totally. The bass man's no slouch either. Nor is the drummer for that matter.

  • thanks a lot for this video, if you could send some more from the same concert it would be great.

  • oh... wonderful...
