I'm back to add to my previous statement by saying that Bruce W. Timm has continued to be creative with Justice League and animated feature projects such as the Wonder Woman movie so I do not mean to say that there are no good superhero cartoons being made now. But they are out weighed by the volume of crap! I want more Alex Toth cartoons of the 1960s that include Shazzan, Herculoids, Mighty Mightor and Young Samson and Goliath since they are an inspiration to Bruce W. Timm.

This episode has all the restrictions from Action for Childrens Television in the 1970s and 80s! Superheroes could not punch the bad guys and there is no tension or suspense. Compare this cartoon to the Alex Toth Hanna Barbera, Space Ghost, Herculoids or Jonny Quest! The 1960s cartoons had real punch until protests over violence censored them! When Batman the animated series restored good stories the fun was back until the over volume of commercial junk took over!

Starblazers and Robotech were far more cinematic, more intelligent, and better animated. Gatchaman was a Japanese super hero cartoon from '72 that had animation and action that wiped the floor with this crap! The Batman animated series and Justice League owe most of their quality and success to the influence that anime has had on American action animation in the last 16 years.

See your point at least about early Superfriends. However, SF vs Legion of Doom improved and the story lines were pretty rivoting for a kid. Didn't see any 70s/80s anime so can't commment. Batman the animated series, Justice league and X Men came out in the 90s and are very good. Im just not a fan of the anime that follows the Sailor Moon templet.

You must be watching some pretty bad anime. These clips are great, though. I love reading everyone's reactions. I have a feeling the writers were told to just crank these scripts out fast and not worry about logic or continuity because kids are dumb. That and the strict restrictions on cartoon violence in the 70s result in some ludicrous action scenes! Ever notice how nobody ever throws a punch? They're constantly throwing ropes or nets or boxes or magic spells. Not very exciting.

The downfall of Saturday morning didn't start with the launch of cable or GI Joe, it was before that in the 1970s when hero shows like this were under heavy restrictions not to show violent acts or anything against a moral standard. The nets kept these rules in place even into the 1980's, which is why syndicated afternoon shows came about once cable could help UHF stations reach more people, and Saturday morning became nothing but kiddie fare with shows like Smurfs and the Littles.
