Actually the cover is a metaphor for communism. The men dressed in red (communists) are taking away from society what is displayed in the picutres. Religion, Fun, and Music. You notice the women and children mourn the loss of their lives, however they are reassured by men in black, one resembling gorbachov the other likely an undercover KGB officer. The children also mourn the loss of the fruits of life, spilt for communism.

I read in an interview with Niel once that the cover of the album was supposed to be a big pun; the people moving the pictures are moving the people emotionally with the pictures.

Thanks to MetalHeavyThunder for the correction. Grant Brough's book was clearly based on Rush's song, not the other way round. I seem to be confusing this story with a cold war era story about a nuclear holocaust. As I recall, the story takes place in Australia. Due to the Coriolis winds at the equator, Australia gets a temporary reprieve. The main character decides to spend his remaining time on a racing car. Sound familiar to anyone?

@4sineweaver2 Yes, very familiar! The novel is On The Beach by Nevil Shute, and as good a book as it is, I prefer (and HIGHLY recommend!) the movie, which is a rarity for me, to choose a film adaptation over the written work. The movie captures the emotions of the characters better, IMHO.
