Actually the cover is a metaphor for communism. The men dressed in red (communists) are taking away from society what is displayed in the picutres. Religion, Fun, and Music. You notice the women and children mourn the loss of their lives, however they are reassured by men in black, one resembling gorbachov the other likely an undercover KGB officer. The children also mourn the loss of the fruits of life, spilt for communism.
It's weird, I logged in to look up this song, and it was in my recommendations.
I read in an interview with Niel once that the cover of the album was supposed to be a big pun; the people moving the pictures are moving the people emotionally with the pictures.
@RotnRoll77 Actually, it's a three stage pun. The moving pictures that are emotionally moving, and the whole scene is being made into a video, or moving picture (with the last visible on the back of the LP).
lmao, listen to "big money", the bass is practically the lead instrument. I can imagine the guys saying "Alright Alex, we need you to...make...uh, it's got to have a kind of horn sound to it".
"If you're into power let's go down to my van because Red Barchetta through a ten gigawatt pre-amp is...wait.....please tell me you're into Rush. (Krieger)
Thanks to MetalHeavyThunder for the correction. Grant Brough's book was clearly based on Rush's song, not the other way round. I seem to be confusing this story with a cold war era story about a nuclear holocaust. As I recall, the story takes place in Australia. Due to the Coriolis winds at the equator, Australia gets a temporary reprieve. The main character decides to spend his remaining time on a racing car. Sound familiar to anyone?
@4sineweaver2 Yes, very familiar! The novel is On The Beach by Nevil Shute, and as good a book as it is, I prefer (and HIGHLY recommend!) the movie, which is a rarity for me, to choose a film adaptation over the written work. The movie captures the emotions of the characters better, IMHO.
I remember hearing this in the shower on the radio when I was about 12. It was two for Teusday and this came on right after Limelight. I asked my dad what the Motor LAw was. He had no clue and niether did I. Than one day it hit me. I think it was the same day I started doing drugs and got laid.
Always thought it was great that Rush did a song about a great scifi book: The Red Barchetta by Grant Brough. Sets the song in a more interesting light if you read the book.
when i was 17 i used to listen to only rap, then i came across this, isnt whasnt metal or rock, it was clean and appealing.rush is a band that attracts all audiences.
I have a 2012 370Z but enough about the cars. Rush has a classic sound and i consider this to be on the same league as Gary Numan with its new wave elements. A song against totalitarian rule is always good in my book.
... Just finished listening to the song while actualy reading the lyrics... Did anyone know that Geddy says "laughing out loud" in the song? that LITERALY made me lol...
Ironically enough, the vocal Conservatives' rapid support of Libertarianism is what is turning the people whose political ideology most resembles it (Liberals) away from Liberterianism.

My wife thinks Rush sucks. She says their music sounds like they are on a space ship and Geddy sounds like a girl. Oh what I wouldn't pay for one more ride on that space ship with that girl. Geddy, Alex, Neil... keep rocking. I'll pay any amount to watch you anywhere.
@Butteroux i removed it myself i merely thought to be silly and comment that your wife must really be loved by you if you're still married to her after her comment about Rush, then I thought it might be inappropriate. I never post anything negatuve and do apoligize if you thought differently. Peace

The smell of the oil and leather just make it a wonderful experience, and alluding the giant air cars is exciting too.
