there are some inappropriate comments, it seems they do not know what it means to the movie, if you really felt the most accurate perspective, this is a great work of art, undoubtedly the best movie I ever seen in my life and the best director of all time, by making the theater art and its ultimate expression .. image sequences, music and dialogues .. has it all.
Whoever uploaded this video basically ruined the scene. Leave the tracking shots in please, the composition is beautiful and essential, do not EDIT AND CUT in order for this to fit the 10 Minute length. Post two videos if you must, but do not EDIT. The circular tracking shot is amazing and was ruined by your hackery.
Dude, i took this video from the "cut " version of the film. You are probably talking about the directors version. Why am I getting blamed for something I have not done???
This is a shame. I am not blaming you per-say. One of the best scenes from the film is ruined by hackery is all. Are you passionate about this film as art, as beauty, as something with meaning? Not only is this hackery, but the scene is completely changed and butchered.
The 'Director's Cut' is actually the short version. Tarkovsky preferred it to the long version but for some reason the long version is called the director's cut or the Scorsese Cut because he was the one who rescued it from Russia.
the scene of the arrest is very natural LOL the same way they use to do it today.
Seriosly the full version of this move I like most of all (it is called Andrey `s Passions) - the exhaustive producer`s work, the same with full and theatric versions of Bergman`s Fanny and Aleksander.
The jester is played by Rolan Bykov, a great Russian directer and actor. His film "Chuchelo"("Scarecrow") is a really beautiful, poetic film. It's on YouTube, but no subtitles. I wonder if Tarkovsky saw it, it was made in '83, three years before Tarkovsky's death.
If you confuse the order of human society with the order of the "world" and think everything is all right what is happening here and elsewhere in this film, then I wonder how the hell you can like it. It's a film about suffering in a human society because you desperately want things to be better, but have no idea what to do (and what exactly to want actually). Confusing human society and nature is a source for spiritual suffering in this film, you obviously don't seem to care. I congratulate.
And I can't both sympathize with his suffering, but also still deride his foolishness? I won't forgive him entirely of his poor judgment just because something horrible happened to him.
Excuse me for being honest, but if you're speaking of an exactly causal relation between him mocking the boyars (acting according to what we call today "freedom of speech", what we believe should be an inherently human right) and him getting his tongues cut off and spending half of his life behind bars, then you are accepting a barbarian element of human society as "the way things are". Deriding his foolishness is out of place.
Andrei Rublev will always be on my Top 10 list. And Tarkovsky will remain one of my all time favorite directors/POETS.
Just this scene alone captures the very essence of the "Russian soul": hard life, poverty and suffering, yet it's all depicted with such warmth and such poetic sensibility.
I wish someone would post the final scene(s) from the movie, when it switches to color (the icons)!
In this episode the Skomorokh (Buffoon) jokes of Boyars. Sings a playful song how Skomorokh's have met the Boyar. The Boyar has offended them. And they to it have shaved a beard (It was the strong insult in Russia XII-XVII сent.) Then Boyar has gone home. Its wife has not learned it without a beard. She has not started up home Boyar. It has told: " Without a beard you not a man. Dress on a head cowards (on russian - "portki") instead of a beard" :) Etc..
The song beginning from 02:45 is indeed such a beautiful thing and gives this scene such an amazing athmosphere.

The jester filled the mind of youngsters with obscenities. The police intervention was justified and necessary.
Greetings!

Cutting their tongues off was justified as well?

He mocked the Boyars. He played a dangerous game and he lost. That's the sad order of the world.

This scene is beautiful, but can someone tell me who those men on horses are, and why do they take away the Jester?
wishywishy 4 years ago
I believe that the monks have the jester taken away by the police to beaten because his act is "profane."
lalacity42 4 years ago 2
Yes, one of the monks, named Kirill, reported his dissentful act to the two men down the road. He later confesses this to Andrei.

I feel this scene the exchange of Akira Kurosawa and Tarkovskyi's arts. (Akira Kurosawa "Donzoko")
This is a very wonderful film.
