People around the world who glorify Evita, please understand this:
It was under Eva and her husband that the middle and upper class were stolen from. It was under her husband that thousands went missing. And it was the world that supported him while he killed them all off with his Peronist party. Yes, this is a marvelous movie, a marvelous musical written by a marvelous composer- however, it's as if a musical was made about a Nazi general. Though the art is good, the woman was not. Thank you.
Doesn't anyone else get chills when the scene suddenly flips from her as a child being denied into the church to thousands mourning her as her body passes, not to mention the awesome music shift behind it?
MAN CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH TO PRODUCE FILM AND IT'S SUBJECT. ANYONE WHO HAS NOT BEEN MOVED BY THIS OPENING, IS CLEARLY NOT FUNCTIONING ON THIS PLANE. GOD BLESSED THE FILMMAKERS HERE AS DID THE SPIRIT OF EVA PERON. THE BEST AND ONLY AMAZING WORK MADDONA HAS PRODUCED. ANTONIO IS MAGIC AS ALWAYS.

The funeral scene makes me angry (the Chivilcoy funeral). Just because Eva and her siblings were illegitimate they had a right to see their father when he died. Eva got her rights when she married Peron. May she live on forever.
the movie is kinda sad to me some people did not like ava peron and some did i always thought that she wanted to help people but some people on here are saying she was basically selfish and only cared about herself well same goes for the us gov our government is selfish and so is our president america is also bankrupt or will be soon the us is not so great either. maybe eva tryied to help but couldn't i don't know but i don't think it is right to slander her she is decessed.
I'm Argentinian and I like to say that this movie and the musical reflect the true essence of Eva Peron, she was a woman with great force and conviction, able to do anything to achieve their goal. and could not find better actress than Madonna to play such a role, I reckon she must have felt very recog with Evita.
I love the musical and movie, no matter how much the Argentines deny it, for the most part, it gives a very accurate portrayal of the Perons-- for the most part. However, I have two major issues with it. TBC
@GoddessofCoruscant 1. It gives Eva too much credit for Argentina's downfall and Juan too little. It was Juan's policies that bankrupted the nation. Eva just followed her husband and went along for the ride, even though she did play a big role.
2. Che as narrator. THe real Che was just as much a dictator as the Perons, and maybe even worse!
Other than that, a great musical and a powerful warning!
@GoddessofCoruscant as an Argentine I can't thank you enough for actually being this informed and for putting it out there. I always get so annoyed when my friends (many music majors, etc.) start spouting how wonderful she was, etc.... I just give them a deadpan look and begin explaining.
@Ignitethestarz thank you for your comments. I've been flamed on here by many Peronists who worship a woman and a man that took your country from first to third world status. It baffles me...
@GoddessofCoruscant Sweetie, tell me when Argentina was first world. I have MANY Argentine relatives, since Im half latina, and never in their history have they been technically first world. they were rich...but in the pockets of the landed gentry who rules argentina....sweetie. that is a fact.
@Ignitethestarz and I love this movie and the stage show, but I get concerned that it glorifies a fascist woman and her husband that harbored Nazis and robbed their country blind taking it from first to third world status. Argentina has never recovered and never will. I also get concerned that it glorifies Che Guevara, who, imo, was worse.
I love the EMOTION! :D I participated in a school play of Evita, and we all sang out our hearts with REQUIEM ETERENEM, DONA EVITA, without knowing what the hell we were saying!!
I love the music, what I don't like is the way it's recycled.. if you listen carefully, there are only five or six tunes performed differently with different words...
I think making -the real wife-witchy was meant to help the plots idea that Evita hated the respectable upper class,as the wife was.Love the way she storms out of the funeral service to confront -the lady friend -and family .
@D22queen: What evaperonfan is saying is that portion of the film is not historically accurate. In real life the wife of Eva's father wasn't such a bitch.
Well, we don't know how the legal wife really acted at the funeral. What we do know is that she relented and let Dona Juana see the body. I don't blame her for being upset though. I mean if my husband had an affair, I'd be mad too.
That bitch just because her husband had an affair that doesn't give her the right to stop his other children from saying goodbye to him. He was their FATHER!
@D22queen it was common for husbands to take mistresses but illegitament children were outcasted during tis time period because they were illegitament eva's mother lived a very hard life
Why do so many start talking about Che Guevara in posts about this musical? "Che" in Evita is supposed to represent the 'everyman' while acting as a POV for the audience and inner voice/conscience for Evita. I have to say watching this film when I was young I fell a little bit in love with Antonio. :)
@cardwitch91 In the stage musical, it's actually Che Guevara (he's dressed in the traditional combats and green beret and smoking the cigar ^_^). In the movie, they made Antonio Banderas' Che character an "everyman" observer, like you said. :)
@cardwitch91 THANK YOU!! Thank you for pointing that out, haha. I come on here and see lots of people arguing about "the" Che (Ernesto Guevara) when in fact that isn't the case at all. She died in '52 and Ernest "Che" Guevara was only arouund '51 getting involved in anything beyond medical school...
@cardwitch91 I think Che is representing the conscience of Argentina as the nation. Maybe even the conscience of Evita. Or maybe it is her inner will to do more. Che was a socialist, a revolutionary. He wanted to rid "the evil" in a much faster and maybe brutal way. But clearly she resisted this beliving it could both lead to problems and it didn't fit her more diplomatic and strategic personality as it would leave rifts in society not mendable.
@cardwitch91 In stage performances he IS Che Guevara. He dresses in the iconic clothing and is aged 17 (as Che would have been)
I think it's because Che is a product of the Peron era. He was a medical student, and what he saw during the era of their reign drove him to rebellion. He's not the "everyman" at all, but a person angered by injustice. He spends a lot of time mocking her and states that she was nothing special.
hello everyone. Does anyone know if the movie that is being played in the theatre of the musical a real movie? If it is, does anyone know the title of it? Great appreciate it..thanks
Che in this movie isn't Che Guevara. I know in the original play, he is the spitting image of Guevara. But in the movie he's just the Everyman, the narrator whom the audience is supposed to identify with.
Yeah, people are stupid. Che Guevara helped Fidel Castro become dictator. El Cher Guevara killed many cubans in the "Plaza De La Revolucion" in Cuba. El Che Guevara was a coward that was hiding in the montains running away from the CIA. To say that "CHE" was a freedom fighter is almost like saying that Osama Bin Laden is a saint.

It sounds more like hellfire and misery rather than something that actually captivates the death of a beloved leader.

Every time I watch this video, I get emotional.
To me, Madonna was a great interpreter of the character of Eva Peron.
Even the director was masterful as the whole staff.
Also music.
This Musical will be remembered in history for centuries ... as well as Evita Peron. Her legacy and her image is and will be immortal.
