Increasing taxes on the wealthy will trickle down to all other class eventually. Dont be so eager to give more to the government. They will soon come for even more. Ron Paul 2012.
@drfreedom11 You are an absolute idiot... ASK Wrong Paul, why does he constantly vote to spend the people's money on the very wealthy? @RushLimborg Except that the 80's created a spiraling public debt, LOWERED the average income, except for the top 1 percent, and increase private debt...So...Sure the economy may have gotten out of a rut, but then it drove it off a cliff

The rich had their tax cuts and created jobs in China by investing trillions there not the US. Wow can't believe Ben Stein who's a hard core Repub is talking about the real facts. We have a revenue problem, he's right. Besides SS is not an entitlement program. You pay for it and you receive it when you turn 65. No one gives you the money and it's not charity.
Obama isn't trying to divide Americans by their class, they already are you dumb blonde bitch. Income inequality is at it's highest since the beginning of the great depression. Over the last 30 years every part of the system has been gamed for the richest 5% to succeed more than any other income class.
WTF is wrong with Fox news? $.9 trillion of $4 trillion is a drop in the bucket? roughly 25% is a drop in the bucket!? For once Ben Stein is right :/ "It's their money" what a bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Give money back to the rich, they will save it. Give money to the poor, they will spend every dime on necessities. BITCH BITCH BITCH BITCH BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course we have to cut spending, that's why we should start with the most wasteful federal program, defense!
The problem with the government raising taxes, by any means is this; the money will not go towards the debt, or people in need. The money will go to wall street, the rich, and the wars we are fighting. Laura has a point here about cutting government. The thing i propose is, Stop spending money on welfare, unemployment, the endless wars, agriculture (where farmers are PAID to not grow crops), and slew of other things the government pays for with your money. BAM i just saved 3 trillion dollars.
my family makes a considerable amount of money owning a healthcare company and i can tell all of u this raising taxes would hurt us less than cutting entitlements many of our clients will literally die without healthcare i agree we need to cut spending on defense and what not but as americans we are all expected to sacrfice you call on the poorest americans to fight your wars but when it comes your time to fight the budget you cant pay taxes greed will be the end of this country
I'm right wing. Stop the waste and stupid-spending first. Then close tax loopholes. Then, if the US must have new revenue, get millionaires off government benefits of any kind: farm subsidies, VA, Social Security, Medicare, green energy......then we'll talk about a national sales tax to get some money from crooks/illegals.........then talk about raising taxes after those things have been taken care of.
I tell you one thing that this bitch doesn't understand what she is talking about. If you wanna america get back to prosperity you have to return manufacturing jobs back into this land. Because someone is willing to lend US money at near zero interest rates is doesn't mean US is going to prosper. IT will get mush worse in US, because the real problem will come when hyperinflation will kick in and average american won't be able to pay for energy and food.
Bush economic policy? ha ha ha. Come on.!!! bitch. It was preplanned ponzi house bubble scheme. Every one new where they were heading to. Some politicians even in 2001 already warned in various senate and house commissions that US headings into enormous housing bubble. Just give me a break.
Plus when the war came no one taxed the ones who benefited from it. And the ones who benefited had been the rich people. Now when this debt became so big and caused by wars and speculation, now she says we can't tax the rich because they made their money from wars and speculations. What a fuck is going on with you Americans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1. Dont you see they ripping you apart?
What this woman tries to fool? So who in this hell is going to pay in later years if you can't tax anyone a part from Joe making 20,000 per year, because in the near future that what most of Americans are going to make. The richest paying today 6-12% of their income on income tax. You say they are Job creators? If yes so why in this land you don't see a real growth in manufacturing jobs growth. Because some Banker makes 100$ millions he is not job creator, but destroyer.
Let me hit the sarcasm button for a moment: "Lordy, Lordy! Heaven help us if we tax the top 1% any more than we have to. They're only paying some of the lowest tax rates in US history! No, no! Let's do "entitlement reform"! To Hell with the people who've worked their entire lives. They don't need Social Security. Who needs the GI Bill, Veteran's Benefits, Pell Grants, student loans, earned income tax credits, Head Start, and other entitlement programs?!!" - Sarcasm machine shutting down...
@TheFluffyDuck We Americans will pay whatever taxes we choose, thank you. And if we think our taxes are too high, we'll say so. And, for future reference, America was founded pretty specifically on not caring what Europeans do. It's called the United States of America because the Founding Fathers thought it would be more convenient for the diplomats than calling it the United States of Not Fookin' Europe.
@jlewisda Well if you want the biggest "defence" force in the world AND a world leading space agency AND free education AND police AND roads than span a continent AND energy security and infrastructure AND national parks and heritage AND immigration and boarder security AND quarantine etc. You can't do that with hardly any income.
A bormance with your founding fathers can't balance your books. Everything in moderation, Im just saying.
wow. well done reporter. you totally expose how little he knows about economics. ofcourse taxes minimise economic growth. the fact that developed economies have less growth now than before is because of dimishining return on kapital. it has nothing to do with low taxes. Steins a douchebag.
They could tax 99% of what every American makes all year and it still would not put and dent in the debt, this country is completely screwed and they know it!
@petervischiofilm Lol, are you STUPID?! 1st- Why raise taxes on a small group of people when it wouldn't make that big of a difference because there are so few. 2nd- They already give away 40% of their income! That is hard earned money, not just pulled out of thin air. They crawled to the top with hard work and grit. 3rd- The top 5% make up the economy because they are typically small business owners and more often than not put their incomes back into the business, not burn it and buy gilded
@petervischiofilm (continued) toilet paper in their bathrooms. They put it to good use as well, and usually use it to further strengthen the economy by creating jobs in their local areas. People don't seem to realize these simple things.
1947-80 marginal tax rates ranged from 90%-75% yet GDP grew nearly 4%, while 1980-2007 tax rates ranked from 28%-37% and GDP was at 2.9%. Moreover, for all the Republicans whom want to make cuts, lets cut military spending, raise taxes 50% on 250k or more, increase carbon tax on fossil, gas, and coal, socialized medicine and force corporations to pay for social security. If we followed this, our country would not be in debt and also have a surplus.
I agree with Ben. The truly wealthy should pay more in taxes. And so should the 47% of Americans that pay no federal income tax. There is no way that half of Americans should not be paying their "fair share".
On the other hand, corporations and businesses should be paying no taxes. This is the dumbest government policy EVER. I want jobs. Corporate taxes are a cost of doing business. Higher costs means jobs move abroad with free trade.
first of all, 938 Billion is a large portion of 4 trillion dollars. 23%. Secondly as Ben Stein said "You can NOT say higher taxes on the rich is bad for economic growth, the data is just not there Laura."
DNC Motto: Confuse the Poor and buy their vote. Both parties serve their entitlement classes. The Plutocracy is sucking the life blood out of the middle class. The Middle Class pays the entitlements and the Wall Street bail out.
What is your education level? Just wondering because you've clearly didn't back up any of your opinions with facts? It must be difficult to formulate an arguement with someone whose actually studied law, philosophy, and politics from a constitutional professor from Stanford, wouldn't you agree?
I do consider myself a socialist; I just want you to understand that economic freedom is totalitarian by its own admission, capitalism is restrained by undemocratic means, allows immorality such as disparities between rich and poor, making money at the expense of your fellow citizens not receiving healthcare, and is un-democratic contrary to liberty.
Ms. Laura missed a point that would have nailed Stein where he thinks, because she got caught looking at the idea from a strictly economic view. Once you sanctify starting down that road and justify a "separation" of the "rich" for special treatment you start down the road to the "divide and conquer" (Communist, Marxist, Alinsky, et al) plans that any open view of the historical record can validate. You're enabling "class envy" as the seed for sowing the fruits of discontent among the masses.
ben stein is officially the dumbest man in america. if his documentary expelled wasn't enough, the fact that he's siding with the dems on economic policy should be sufficient to prove this.
(continued) never improving the economy. There are plenty of examples of this. One of the more recent ones would be Reagan's 1-year recovery from the failed Carter economy. The best example is during Calvan Coolige's presidency, when he cut taxes and the Federal budget in half, and ended the depression of 1920 in one year, which was statistacally worse than the Great Depression.
Ben Stein is a moron. Laura Ingram had a golden opportunity here to explain just how wrong he was here, but apparently, she is incapable of arguing against Keynsian economic theory. First of all, having different tax rates for different income levels is against the constitution's equal protection clause. Second, if you are for "taxing the rich" differently, you are following Marxist "class struggle" philosophy. Third, it does not work. He is wrong about there never being an example of tax cuts
@Bergertim Jefferson asserted "general welfare clause" the constitution allows tax for the benefit of the union or to pay of debt. Productivity has increased while wages decreased, CEO pay has increased 750 to 1, the top 1% own 25-40% of the wealth; since Hoover, there is a correlation where in 1928 and 2007 the top 1% owned 24% of the wealth, whereas marginal rate were at 90% during Eisenhower and the economy grew from 1940-80 with higher taxer rates, so whats your arguement for capitalism?
@sisque16 Perhaps you should read the book "the 5000 Year Leap," which explains how capitalism and innovation increased mankind's technology by 5000 years in under 200 years. We went from muskets to nuclear weapons from 1776 to 1945. And, without economic freedom, there is no freedom. It is not the job of the government, nor is it in the Constitution, to equalize wages, by punishing CEO's for their pay. Their pay is between them and the shareholders of the corporation.
@Bergertim How ironic that you used nuclear weapons as a direct correlation to capitalism? I will remind you it was a gov't program such as the Manhattan Project in conjuction with Canada and the UK that led to atomic bomb, moreover I would re-read the Constitution thoroughly in regards to "due process of law, the 1964 Civil Right Bill, the Bill of rights, and specifically Article 1 section 8, which explicity allows congress to tax for the general welfare on its citizens and tax commerce.
@sisque16 The Manhatten Project was the direct inventor of the Atomic bomb. It probably wouldnt've been invented for another fifty years, had it not been for that. You can thank the USA for the computer you are typing on, the electricity it uses, the materials which the chair you are sitting in are made of, your car, your house, etc. Only 5% of all the people who ever lived were free, and only fools, like yourself, wish to devolve back to slavery. As far as the bill of rights...
@sisque16 (continued) It's funny how it took 150 years for people to come up with that interpretation of those words. Nothing like social welfare had been invented yet, at the time it was written. Sorry, but that was not the intention of our founding fathers. That is the interpretation of Karl Marx and his minions.
end the wars clo9se the 1000 bases , these ass holes wanna take away from the old folks , who gave there lives to fight in the last real war we have had , ww2 vets need there S.S . checks , they fought so we could live like we do now, and now they wanna disrespect them by starving them , you think they are only taxing the rich lmao, id like to slame there 2 heads togather , total BS.LIE after LIE
Excellent point she makes about the December extension of the Bush tax cuts which the liberals and the ONE understood & agreed was not the thing to do
If it wasn't good to do in December, why is it good to do now? Exactly ! !
Ben Stein is going senile in his old age, he really needs to pull his head out of Lord Keynes' ass and start using it, or check into a nursing home before he falls and breaks his hip.
@hellsunicorn Uh, I think you'll find that, bar a few relatively well known colloquialisms, my sentence was exemplary. There could, perhaps, have been a comma between semi-literate and b-actor, and perhaps an "and" between b-actor and bozo, but I wouldn't be so cruel to assume that such trivial omissions of largely superficial grammar would inhibit you from being able to apprehend the meaning of a relatively straightforward sentence.

Yeah...that's only half the truth. The debt increases came from massive increases in government spending--much of which was in defense.
"It LOWERED the average income, except for the top 1 percent--"
Nope. The average real income for the POOREST 20% rose from $6500 (1980) to $7000 (1989).
The poverty rate fell from 15.2% (1982) to 12.8% (1989).
The middle class shrunk, yes--because those middle-classers moved UP on the spectrum.

666sigma 8 months ago
first of all, 938 Billion is a large portion of 4 trillion dollars.

It must be difficult to formulate an arguement with someone whose actually studied law, philosophy, and politics from a constitutional professor from Stanford, wouldn't you agree?
sisque16 8 months ago
I do consider myself a socialist; I just want you to understand that economic freedom is totalitarian by its own admission, capitalism is restrained by undemocratic means, allows immorality such as disparities between rich and poor, making money at the expense of your fellow citizens not receiving healthcare, and is un-democratic contrary to liberty.

JOJONOMO 8 months ago
You're enabling "class envy" as the seed for sowing the fruits of discontent among the masses.
doctorhugo 8 months ago
ben stein is officially the dumbest man in america. if his documentary expelled wasn't enough, the fact that he's siding with the dems on economic policy should be sufficient to prove this.
cristoballs 8 months ago
(continued) never improving the economy. There are plenty of examples of this. One of the more recent ones would be Reagan's 1-year recovery from the failed Carter economy. The best example is during Calvan Coolige's presidency, when he cut taxes and the Federal budget in half, and ended the depression of 1920 in one year, which was statistacally worse than the Great Depression.
Bergertim 8 months ago
Ben Stein is a moron. Laura Ingram had a golden opportunity here to explain just how wrong he was here, but apparently, she is incapable of arguing against Keynsian economic theory. First of all, having different tax rates for different income levels is against the constitution's equal protection clause. Second, if you are for "taxing the rich" differently, you are following Marxist "class struggle" philosophy. Third, it does not work. He is wrong about there never being an example of tax cuts
Bergertim 8 months ago
@Bergertim Jefferson asserted "general welfare clause" the constitution allows tax for the benefit of the union or to pay of debt. Productivity has increased while wages decreased, CEO pay has increased 750 to 1, the top 1% own 25-40% of the wealth; since Hoover, there is a correlation where in 1928 and 2007 the top 1% owned 24% of the wealth, whereas marginal rate were at 90% during Eisenhower and the economy grew from 1940-80 with higher taxer rates, so whats your arguement for capitalism?
sisque16 8 months ago
@sisque16 Perhaps you should read the book "the 5000 Year Leap," which explains how capitalism and innovation increased mankind's technology by 5000 years in under 200 years. We went from muskets to nuclear weapons from 1776 to 1945. And, without economic freedom, there is no freedom. It is not the job of the government, nor is it in the Constitution, to equalize wages, by punishing CEO's for their pay. Their pay is between them and the shareholders of the corporation.
Bergertim 8 months ago
@Bergertim How ironic that you used nuclear weapons as a direct correlation to capitalism? I will remind you it was a gov't program such as the Manhattan Project in conjuction with Canada and the UK that led to atomic bomb, moreover I would re-read the Constitution thoroughly in regards to "due process of law, the 1964 Civil Right Bill, the Bill of rights, and specifically Article 1 section 8, which explicity allows congress to tax for the general welfare on its citizens and tax commerce.
sisque16 8 months ago
@sisque16 The Manhatten Project was the direct inventor of the Atomic bomb. It probably wouldnt've been invented for another fifty years, had it not been for that. You can thank the USA for the computer you are typing on, the electricity it uses, the materials which the chair you are sitting in are made of, your car, your house, etc. Only 5% of all the people who ever lived were free, and only fools, like yourself, wish to devolve back to slavery. As far as the bill of rights...
Bergertim 8 months ago
@sisque16 (continued) It's funny how it took 150 years for people to come up with that interpretation of those words. Nothing like social welfare had been invented yet, at the time it was written. Sorry, but that was not the intention of our founding fathers. That is the interpretation of Karl Marx and his minions.

Or you could pull yours out of good ol' semi-literate b-actor bozo raegan's.

@MussyPagnet Learn to write in English, and then I'll try to see if I can make sense of whatever gibberish you were trying to say.
hellsunicorn 8 months ago
@hellsunicorn Uh, I think you'll find that, bar a few relatively well known colloquialisms, my sentence was exemplary. There could, perhaps, have been a comma between semi-literate and b-actor, and perhaps an "and" between b-actor and bozo, but I wouldn't be so cruel to assume that such trivial omissions of largely superficial grammar would inhibit you from being able to apprehend the meaning of a relatively straightforward sentence.
