Wow....flashbacks to childhood. I remember waking up every morning between 2nd and 9th grades (1989-1995) and watching this on SportsChannel, while eating a bowl of cereal before going to my bus stop to go to school. It was how I got all my scores and news updates--back before you could just flip on your computer and go to ESPN.com, or use your smartphone to get sports news/scores. Oh how times have changed.
Man, Quebec was lousy that year. Hartford could have lost all the rest of their games and made the playoffs.
BTW, do you have the Sports Plus later that year when they announced that the San Jose team was going to be named the Sharks? I remember seeing that in the morning before school back then.
Now that you mention it... I do recall 2 of these channels on Barden Cable in the eraly 1990s before it was acquired by Comcast... For a time, there were two of these keyfax/niteowl-type channels on channels 52 and 53 in Detroit... Those were the good old days!!!
Does anyone know from when and how long this ran on SportsChannel? I remember it stopped when SportsChannel America became NewSport, because that ran for 24 hours
On SportsChannel New England, it ran until spring, 1991, when it was replaced by the clip you posted. It was called Web Sports Wire, which IIRC was still a joint venture between the AP and Tribune Media Services. The graphics and the music library totally changed. I did not like the changes.
The first time I saw it was July, 1989. As seen by the clips Doza posted, SCNE would run regular programming beginning at 6 on weekdays. Usually the schedule card would go up after 5:30.
I remember it being on overnight. Basically there would be a replay of whatever (for example, hockey) game was on then this would come on anywhere between 2 to 4 in the morning. It was often still on when I came from school around 3 PM.
That was nice... But in my case back in 1990s Detroit -- the cable company though it was a good idea to give them their own channels to themselves -- thus allowing to stay 24/7!!! Also, I love the songs in this clip!!! Wish I knew who composed them and what are the names of the songs!!!
Thanks BNA for posting this. Actually this was from January 31, 1990. I checked on Flyers History, and there were two 6-3 games with the Pens that year. This was the second. Plus all the college hoops are playing conference games.
I remember watching this back in the days when i was seven waking up in the morning and tuning into SportsChannel it looked like it come off of an AMIGA Computer or something.
The Amiga was very versatile when it came to video generation at the time this was on the air. Remember there were professional Amiga models, not just the 500 you saw in department stores. I don't know that it's an Amiga, but it's likely given their ubiquity in TV stations and networks at the time.
I remember this! I loved it. I think it came on a sports channel in philadelphia. So You Wanna Be a Gambler? We used to laugh at that show, and some show on FNN Sports, Time Out for Trivia.
Ha! My local newspaper (The Blade in Toledo, OH) used this exact system in doing their on-screen news channel that was seen through our cable service (also owned by the newspaper company).
oh my...... I remember this. I was a wee little kid back then (like 6 or 7) but they had this on Sportschannel New York also. Check out the old-school hockey divisions. I forgot about the patrick division, lol.
It's likely just "library music" or production music, basically kinda-cheesy electro-rock pieces done by studio musicians and sold to networks and TV stations. The draw was, it was royalty free - every time they play a Kanye West song in a commercial, he gets a check. This stuff, after you bought the CDs or tapes, it was yours to use royalty-free. I've started collecting library music but I haven't run across this piece.
I have about 2 hours of Sportschannel new england back when it used to be on NESN. I'll tape it and put it up sometime. I think its from 1990 or 1991.
THANK YOU for posting this... I've been trying to figure out what this was since 1990 when I saw it as a not-too-bright highschooler. Literally NO ONE on the internet has any info on it, and I think that's odd because it's so ahead of its time, sooo Prodigy, and what an odd use for high technology when most sports fans of the time would punch computer nerds for fun.
This wasn't on Sports Channel Chicago or at least I don't recall it on that channel. But in Chicago we were able to get another Sports Channel (on another channel on the dial other that SC Chicago) where this is what I would be able to see at least before regular programming began.
I remember this from the days of SportsChannel Philadelphia too. I use to leave the TV locked to this at night. Gotta love how every so often they'd roll out those "So You Wanna Be a Gambler?" commercials too.
What song is this on APM?

Great! In New York, in addition to this, they also had the Daily News Channel which ran similarly. I wish they would bring them back!

I was not happy with the changes either. Do you happen to know when the Sports Plus Network began airing on SportsChannel?

So were the Red Wings that year. They didn't win the cup until 1997 & won again in 1998 & 2002, too.

Anyone remember AP News Plus? It was similar to Sports Plus as it used the same system and had similar graphics.
Before I saw this video I didn't know there existed Sports Plus.
