I know that many great guitarists of today quote this one clip as there inspiration for starting to play. my favourite is Dave Gilmoor , who said "well Hank made it sound so good" thanks for posting.
It is quite stunning the number of guitar giants who reference this single, brief piece of celluloid as influencing them. Clapton, Waters, Townshend, Knoppfler, Zappa, Santana and many others...
Yeah, you are right, the personnel could change, and did. But for mine, "The Spectacled One" is irreplaceable. I know that since Bruce (the guy on the left in the clip) admitted in an interview, that Hank Marvin created The Shadows sound during the six months after Cliff's Stratocaster arrived. Simple as that.
This clip from the movie created a sensation among budding future famous guitar players. This clip is very important in the annals of rock history.
What a marvellous band was The Shadows! Still great to listen to 50 years on. My favourite Shadows tracks are The Warlord and Apache (but everyone likes Apache).
May be we'll never see their like again. Still, we have their music at home or on YT. Thanks for posting, Tranquility12.
@norristerse - Don't know why Jet Harris and Tony Meehan left The Shadows, even whether they left voluntarily or were asked to. I do know this though: Hank Marvin is a wonderful musician as all of them were in The Shadows, and being one of Jehovah's Witnesses has likely made him a better person as well.
Incidentally, Hank isn't a Jehovah's - there's no such thing. He is, in fact, one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
@paulkate72 if hank is a nice chap he was probably one already. i know a jehovah's witness who was a twat before and after his conversion, so it doesn't necessarily make any difference.
the term "jehovah's" is a widely used abbreviation- just not widely used by jehovahses.

I believe it was this very clip that was responsible for thousands of guitarists taking up the instrument in the first place. Some of the biggest names in the business would agree.
I've said this before, but I'm gonna say it again now that I've found the actual clip!!!
I pissed my pants with excitement when I first saw the close up of Hank Marvin's Stratocater in the 1961 film 'The Young Ones'; I just had to have one!
Hank Marvin - The only guitarist to play actual melodies rather than endless fast runs. Think it's easy? Just try it, all you wannabees. The covers band circuit is littered with the remains of people who thought they could play like Hank!
@twoslices NO KIDDING!! That is why Hank Marvin got his in red, the color of protest in his neck of the woods. He had a producer buy a red Stratocaster with gold in stead of chrome, and it was sent to him. The entire band play red Fender Srats and P-bass. Look up pictures of Hank Marvin and the Shadows, all red Fenders!
@twoslices I thought it was the recording producer, but besides being a singer, Cliff Richards was also a record producer. Funny how it was illegal, and more illegal if it were red! Those snobs!
I never did figure out how Hank managed to play with his hand on the trem. arm when not using it and managed to keep the notes on pitch (more or less).
Had a single by Cliff Richard and the Drifters.Dont remember the track name, but was this the Shadows name before they became the Shadows.. Any info anyone ??
I've watched a lot of these videos and I find this music incredibly lame and jouvenile. The world must have been much different when this became popular.
Had you been in Hamburg in 1961 on the Reeperbahn to see The Beatles at the Top Ten Club or in England in 1960 when Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent toured, you'd have eaten your words. It's not the times, it's the stuff that gets censored out, be it today or yesterday.
These people who were so intellectually cultivated that a synchronized turn could send them into a frenzy? Yes I'd say they could read latin and were masters of integral calculus.
@garvess....Mmmmm such sarcasm, yet it was a British 60 film, with a directed audience. What did you expect them to do? all fart in time to the music? Besides, if you dont like it dont watch.

I really do not think it good to argue as we are all agreed (I think) that The Shadows are a great group. Who is best is very subjective. HBM has gone on record as saying the best was John Rostill followed by a close Alan Jones
"HBM has gone on record as saying the best was John Rostill followed by a close Alan Jones"
ok, but John was with the shadows for 10? years 1963-dead, Harris ws with the shadows in 1958-1962 so Rostill ws over 2x longer than Harris with them...
Is this an orginal filming of a show in '61? Or is it a remake? For some reason it looks like a movie remake: the picture quality is so good, and the camera shots seem rather modern - it all seems like a modern recreation of the 60's. Also, wasn't colour film still pretty rare at the time - like the first Beatles videos were all still black and white.
No its all absolutely genuine, filmed on Eastmancolour 35 mm colour movie stock, and is from the film The Young Ones. Colour film back then was of excellent quality. The classic Ealing Movie, The Titfield Thunderbolt is another good example of such, quality film.
In the early to mid 60's NOKIE EDWARDS was THE guitar hero for the USA and Japan. HANK MARVIN belonged to the rest of the world. Nokie can play anything, all the session men in Nashville regard him as one of their own...there is no higher compliment.
I take no sides in any silly V's vs Shads debate (they're both great) but one thing's clear: the Shadows have the classier movie clip! That was an outstanding clip. Where is it from? Looks taken from a movie. The Venture's Beloved Invaders movie is wonderful, but not in color and not as well composed as this. There are lots of excellent late period Ventures clips from Japan out there (search for 45th Anniversary, for example) but nothing as vivid as this capturing them in their prime.
would not go that far as to say they were the best, check groups from across the pond..Link wray Dick Dale, the safaries,Chantays..Wailers..Santo&Johnny.
