  • An absolute classic surf guitar masterpiece.

  • Nice Video!

  • god what sheep ppl were

  • They look cool in their suits, like the villians in the Quentin Tarantino film reservoir dogs.

  • Dubbed in from the record release. Horrible clapping and screams dubbed in too, [btw, relax, they didn't write Apache anyway]

  • This awesome band reminds me of Pulp Fiction soundtrack

  • THE SHADOWMEN THE SAVAGE

Nice version by a band from Australia. Worth a watch.

  • Is the title refeering to native americans??? I suggest yes could anyone provide information to me pls,, they also wrote the song apache.. so tell who in particular they are refeering pls...

  • @orpho71 This song is about robbie savage.

  • @halifaxshayman27 yeah, right hahahhahha

  • God, I love these guys- heard them first in 1960 on EP brought from England.

  • Tubbyduff is right.

I know that many great guitarists of today quote this one clip as there inspiration for starting to play. my favourite is Dave Gilmoor , who said "well Hank made it sound so good" thanks for posting.

  • Happiest band ever. i love em.

  • this is cool stuff. thanks for posting. :)

  • These are the REAL Shadows.

  • Wonderful track from "The Young Ones" - thank you so much

  • look at that swagger. this is music... not the noise from 2000s

  • I say! Nice foot-work lads!

  • One of the best clips. Playing lead, using a whammy bar, stomping in all sync, matching guitars that's The Shadows.

  • This is The Shadows at their absolute peak, After this the way was just started going downwards....

  • qe banda mas poronnga!

  • How are those people in the crowd not shaking their hips!???!

  • It is quite stunning the number of guitar giants who reference this single, brief piece of celluloid as influencing them. Clapton, Waters, Townshend, Knoppfler, Zappa, Santana and many others...

  • Make no mistake Jet was good those days. But like many he fell by the wayside.

The Shadows always was Hank Marvin and the rest.

  • @Tubbyduff

Yeah, you are right, the personnel could change, and did. But for mine, "The Spectacled One" is irreplaceable. I know that since Bruce (the guy on the left in the clip) admitted in an interview, that Hank Marvin created The Shadows sound during the six months after Cliff's Stratocaster arrived. Simple as that.

This clip from the movie created a sensation among budding future famous guitar players. This clip is very important in the annals of rock history.

  • This must be the acoustic version

  • Hank Marvin, what a soloist!

  • JET!!! ステキすぎです。

    ご冥福をお祈りします。

  • Jet, Thanks for everything...RIP...but you'll never be forgotten..Jet black, Jet black..

  • Look at how cool Jet is here!

  • RIP Jet Harris. MBE. Rock on Jet

  • God Bless Jat..Another legend gone..R.I.P..

  • What a marvellous band was The Shadows! Still great to listen to 50 years on. My favourite Shadows tracks are The Warlord and Apache (but everyone likes Apache).

May be we'll never see their like again. Still, we have their music at home or on YT. Thanks for posting, Tranquility12.

  • cool dudes

  • The Grand-daddy of modern Rock and Roll guitar.

  • Jet Harris, the Legend the original and Best and Tony Meehan!

  • enter Phil Specter with the wall of sound attack and the seeds of the present state of affairs is sown.

  • they lost some of their rock n roll attitude when they fired jet and tony.

    shame, really.

(then brian locking joined and converted them to jehovah's witnessness!)

  • @norristerse I have to agree. I wonder why they fell out of favour?

  • @davrosd

apparently in tony's case it was for persistent lateness and jet got the tin tack for hitting the sauce a bit too often.

(better than being a jehovah's i would have thought!)

  • @norristerse - Don't know why Jet Harris and Tony Meehan left The Shadows, even whether they left voluntarily or were asked to. I do know this though: Hank Marvin is a wonderful musician as all of them were in The Shadows, and being one of Jehovah's Witnesses has likely made him a better person as well.

Incidentally, Hank isn't a Jehovah's - there's no such thing. He is, in fact, one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

  • @paulkate72 if hank is a nice chap he was probably one already. i know a jehovah's witness who was a twat before and after his conversion, so it doesn't necessarily make any difference.

the term "jehovah's" is a widely used abbreviation- just not widely used by jehovahses.

  • @norristerse - I guess we can leave it at. Thanks for your reply anyway.

  • @paulkate72

no worries, mate! good tune, in't it?

  • A classic!!

  • They are the British Ventures. Well played. Wished they were more famous in the States.

  • @photobart1 No The Ventures are the American Shadows

  • 0:25

    STAR POWER!!!!

  • It must be hard for the band to keep time when the audience is clapping to the beat of "Hokey Pokey".

  • i have that exact same drum kit!

    it's upstairs in my house!

    i play it regularly too!

Gretsch Round Badge Champagne Sparkle :D

  • It is definitely Jet Harris on bass and (Tony Mehan on drums)

  • Whos the bassist in this clip ?

  • @sportsattax Licorice Locking I guess, but I dunno

  • @ahha6304

Thought he never used a plectrum .

Whos the one who plucked the strings with his fingers ?

  • @ahha6304 Too early. its Jet Harris. I used to deliver Brian Lockings mail.

  • @sportsattax The bassist is Jet Harris

  • wow do a little step routine and bum u can FUCK EVERYONE IN THAT ROOM

  • @BayouBluesMan

I want to FUCK them but they are too old for you chickey poo

  • @MsPokeyman

I would BONE them in a minute before any one here

  • 1st. why can the crowd nowadays. just sit down and relax?????? 2. lol the clapping hands is out of timing. . either that. the shadows is simply fantastic

  • I believe it was this very clip that was responsible for thousands of guitarists taking up the instrument in the first place. Some of the biggest names in the business would agree.

  • this is real footage?

  • @AaronBaker12345 Its taken from the Cliff Richard film The Young Ones

  • WHITE PEOPLE!

  • The Savage THE SHADOWMEN Good new version if you like this song

  • The Shadows es un conjunto soberbio y cautivante. Me embruja el sonido de su música.

  • Shit...didn't people get excited easily in them days :)

  • I've said this before, but I'm gonna say it again now that I've found the actual clip!!!

I pissed my pants with excitement when I first saw the close up of Hank Marvin's Stratocater in the 1961 film 'The Young Ones'; I just had to have one!

    Posted by

    Peter Cook of 'July'

  • Hank Marvin - The only guitarist to play actual melodies rather than endless fast runs. Think it's easy? Just try it, all you wannabees. The covers band circuit is littered with the remains of people who thought they could play like Hank!

  • fabulous!

  • One of my favorite intro's of all time!

  • Jet Harris was the driving force of The Shadows, just listen to the early numbers like 36 - 24 - 36, Kon Tiki etc.!

  • The coolest!

  • With Jet Harris at the Hackney Empire!

  • great song..too bad they added kids on a Roller Coaster to the mix.

Seriously the first scream scared the sh** outta me.

  • turn your guitar and the crowd goes wild!

  • @RJFSHADOWSMUSIC Yeah they went insane when Elvis started moving his hips around, so yeah Lol

  • Every guitar is a red Fender!

  • @klotzstang

You couldnt even get a fender in the UK back then because of import restrictions. They had to get them direct from the US

  • @twoslices NO KIDDING!! That is why Hank Marvin got his in red, the color of protest in his neck of the woods. He had a producer buy a red Stratocaster with gold in stead of chrome, and it was sent to him. The entire band play red Fender Srats and P-bass. Look up pictures of Hank Marvin and the Shadows, all red Fenders!

  • @klotzstang

From what I gather Cliff went to the states on a promo visit and brought back a red 58 strat for Hank.

  • @twoslices I thought it was the recording producer, but besides being a singer, Cliff Richards was also a record producer. Funny how it was illegal, and more illegal if it were red! Those snobs!

  • @klotzstang

    Wasnt Norrie Paramor their producer?

  • @twoslices Indeed!

  • "From the 'Young One's Movie'..."

  • I never did figure out how Hank managed to play with his hand on the trem. arm when not using it and managed to keep the notes on pitch (more or less).

  • Brilliant piece of footage!

  • why cant this last longer :(

  • Interesting to see that audiences couldn't clap in time even then... :-)

  • Comment removed

  • @RJ4960 I think they were clapping in time but for some reason YT nearly always makes the picture and sound out of synch

  • @RJ4960 Yes, where is the Beatles?! This was the true beat music...!!! :)

  • "El salvaje" ...if you remember KULDIP the great hindu singer, you might also remember "Spanish eyes", which he made a world wide hit.

  • Are they real or Thunderbird puppets?

  • lol wait this isnt the savage is it? hmmm ill get back on this...

  • SpyTheChocaMan

    It's you!

  • Yes, mackfender, The Shadows were the Drifters originally.

  • Had a single by Cliff Richard and the Drifters.Dont remember the track name, but was this the Shadows name before they became the Shadows.. Any info anyone ??

ps I'm now 62 and still love these guys !!

  • @mackfender Yes, that was the original Shadows name, which they changed due to American act with same name.

  • my god... is it me, or was the two-step really that popular back then.... i wonder what a 2 live crew video would have done to this crowd...

  • I believe this very clip to have been responsible for thousands of British people taking up the guitar

  • THE AWESOME SHADOWS OF ENGLAND from the 1961 movie THE YOUNG ONES w/ CLIFF RICHARD.

  • what movie is this from?

  • I've watched a lot of these videos and I find this music incredibly lame and jouvenile. The world must have been much different when this became popular.

  • to quote the Dude..

"Well that's just like your opinion, man."

and if you didn't notice, this music video was shot at a youth center, this may account for this being "juvenile".

  • @garvess

Had you been in Hamburg in 1961 on the Reeperbahn to see The Beatles at the Top Ten Club or in England in 1960 when Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent toured, you'd have eaten your words. It's not the times, it's the stuff that gets censored out, be it today or yesterday.

  • @garvess Aye, it was a much different place, and you can bet most of the audience could spell juvenile.

  • These people who were so intellectually cultivated that a synchronized turn could send them into a frenzy? Yes I'd say they could read latin and were masters of integral calculus.

  • @garvess....Mmmmm such sarcasm, yet it was a British 60 film, with a directed audience. What did you expect them to do? all fart in time to the music? Besides, if you dont like it dont watch.

  • Comment removed

  • Calculus! Latin! Wow! you must be clever.

  • Yes I've heard of Calculus and latin. I hope you dont consider that solid criteria for cleverness.

  • I don't , but you obviously do.

  • Clearly.

  • The world was much different and probably better without the likes of you!

  • Probably better? I doubt it but its a hard thing to quantify isn't it?

  • @garvess IT WAS ! ! !

  • haha love the adoring screams

  • Comment removed

  • this has got a awesome start to it , much better than 1961 record

  • Stunning!

  • its pro eee XD

  • GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the reason this group has lasted so long .

    is simple.

they were fantastic musicians .and each added his bit . including the bassists

  • @HITTHESKINS and they had really nice red fenders !

  • @HITTHESKINS

    exactly.

    no dead weights.

  • This number is stillas good today as it was almost 50 years ago... That's the proof of quality. Amazing!

  • the shads with jet harris amazing

  • yeah shan loves this one

  • yea, the Shadows was the best when Jet and Tony played with Marvin and Welch. It was the best shadows line-up with the best bassist on the world in that years and great drummer like Bennett, however Harris is still one of the best and his bass style is best

  • Disagree! Jet was good around this time but unfortunatyely he hasn't managed to maintain his initial professionalism.

Quite frankly, Jet could not be trusted to produce anything worthwhile 'LIVE'

  • ok, but Shadows line up with Harris was the best, and that is true, next opinion (about Jet's best) is only my opinion :) Maybe you have right...

  • I really do not think it good to argue as we are all agreed (I think) that The Shadows are a great group. Who is best is very subjective. HBM has gone on record as saying the best was John Rostill followed by a close Alan Jones

  • "HBM has gone on record as saying the best was John Rostill followed by a close Alan Jones"

ok, but John was with the shadows for 10? years 1963-dead, Harris ws with the shadows in 1958-1962 so Rostill ws over 2x longer than Harris with them...

  • middle part solo very original better than the official records release

  • Isnt This From "The Young Ones"?

  • whoa, amazing video!!

Is this an orginal filming of a show in '61? Or is it a remake? For some reason it looks like a movie remake: the picture quality is so good, and the camera shots seem rather modern - it all seems like a modern recreation of the 60's. Also, wasn't colour film still pretty rare at the time - like the first Beatles videos were all still black and white.

    thanks!

  • This is the original movie.

  • thanks for your reply! It's quite an amazing video. It looks like a perfect (even charicatural) snapshot of those days. And it's beautiful!

  • No its all absolutely genuine, filmed on Eastmancolour 35 mm colour movie stock, and is from the film The Young Ones. Colour film back then was of excellent quality. The classic Ealing Movie, The Titfield Thunderbolt is another good example of such, quality film.

  • Thanks for all the info - very interesting, and surprising for me!

  • Real gone Daddy O.

  • Legends.

  • check out THE SHADOWMEN APACHE nice sound

  • Does anyone know the name of the theater this was filmed in? Is it Colston Hall in Bristol?

  • The theatre was the Finsbury Park Empire. I believe the building was demolished soon after this was filmed.

  • people seem that are in a roller coaster xD

  • what movie is this from?

  • Comment removed

  • I checked out The Shadowmen from Australia. Very Good.

The Marvingers were also good. Not sure where they are from.

  • love the matching Fenders!

  • Pure awesomeness!

  • the SHADOWS were far superior than the VENTURES. HANK MARVIN was the first great guitar hero. and had an awesome sound.

the VENTURES were good but basically churned out album after album . without any real polish .

some of there renditions . sucked. to say the least. .

serious musicians talk about HANK MARVIN being there god. i dont ever remember anyone talk in the same light about NOKIE EDWARDS.

  • In the early to mid 60's NOKIE EDWARDS was THE guitar hero for the USA and Japan. HANK MARVIN belonged to the rest of the world. Nokie can play anything, all the session men in Nashville regard him as one of their own...there is no higher compliment.

  • I take no sides in any silly V's vs Shads debate (they're both great) but one thing's clear: the Shadows have the classier movie clip! That was an outstanding clip. Where is it from? Looks taken from a movie. The Venture's Beloved Invaders movie is wonderful, but not in color and not as well composed as this. There are lots of excellent late period Ventures clips from Japan out there (search for 45th Anniversary, for example) but nothing as vivid as this capturing them in their prime.

  • The real first guitar hero was Duane Eddy ¡¡¡

  • My first guitar hero was Bert Weedon

  • @freddypossy

Yep,'Play in a Day' tuition from Bert

  • I sense that you are trying to wind people up.Both these bands are great and ofcourse still performing today albeit with slighly different personnel.

  • I love the rough, tough and aggressive sound of The Vs (especially Nokie's sound) and I also love the mild and sweet sound of The Shads too.

So, I love them both ... actually I love all the Surfing Band and all the surfing music's fan.

  • yes, i am the 100th person to rate this vid.

  • They are skilled masters.

  • Checked out Evening Shadows, and you're right. Very good sound, but thought the drumming was a bit week. No drive.

  • The Shadowmen Apache (press VIDEO button top left)

Great Shadows covers and sound. One of the better Shadows bands I've heard.

  • ????

  • Try the Evening Shadows - they're fantastic and have got Hank's unique style and sound exactly! see what you think - regards

  • would not go that far as to say they were the best, check groups from across the pond..Link wray Dick Dale, the safaries,Chantays..Wailers..Santo&Johnny.

  • im guessing the people screaming are getting killed

  • how a guitar instrumental group should sound.

    simply the best ever

  • They really had all the moves!

  • THE classic Shadows lineup,it all went belly up after Jet Harris and Tony Meehan left(sacked?)

  • Rubbish! It got better!

  • Well OK Brian Bennett was a far better drummer but 'Liqourice' Locking better the Jet.hello! I prefered the sound of The Ventures anyway.

  • Fender
