Very impressive! The 4/8 way joysticks are fantastic, and the seamless removal of Windows is superb. That is much more difficult than you made it look! Tell Katie I said she should definitely let you take it upstairs. :)
You're right about the difference between 4 & 8-way sticks. I got 2 8-way joysticks, found I couldn't play Pac-Man, went back & added a dedicated 4-way in the control panel. Cool video and cab!
very nice. I just built my own Mame arcade unit. I just purchased 2 Mag-Stik Plus joysticks from Ultimarc. id like to ask how you fitted the joystick washer on top of the controller. I cant pull off the joystick top. what did you do? if i feed the joystick from the bottom of control panel only joystick top will show. help!! thanks in advance
Does anyone else find it awesome this guy finished his Mame cabinet before he finished the room he has it stored in? lol Would you be willing to share the custom XP start screen and recompiled mame for followers of your work? Thanks!
That was a nice introduction to your project. I hope to do that myself someday. I really like those joysticks and how they switch from 8 way to 4 way. I was not aware of those. I see so many people that have both an 8 way and 4 way separately. Is there any disadvantage of having a joystick that switches back and forth? (I can't think of any)
Thanks for the video, it's nice to see someone actually talk about their cab instead of having thumping music play, or a guy that sounds like he's out of breath from just walking. I'm getting a list together of what I need to build my first cab, and I'm debating on the Mag-Stik Plus that you got, or the Ultra 360. I can't find much for reviews on the 360, and what scares me is if I have to program it for each game.[I'm not sure if this is the case]. Did you consider the 360 at all?
I did consider the Ultra 360, and many things about it are appealing (especially the custom profiles for each game), but ultimately what turned me off about it is that it's an all digital stick, not a physical stick. Meaning that it has 360 degrees of motion all the time, even if you program it just to detect 4-way, 8-way, etc. I wanted to have that tactile feedback.
In hindsight what I would do instead, though, is buy two dedicated 8-way joysticks, and one dedicated 4-way.
Interesting, I was thinking that myself, just because with a dedicated 4-way I could place it dead center of the cab, and have more of an authentic feel when playing pacman, etc. Do you lose a bit of the feel of those games being off-centered, is that why you would do it that way, or just so you don't have to constantly change the joystick[plunger]. I agree the 360 looks more like an analog controller than a true arcade stick.I think you're right you would lose a lot of the feel.
Man ! Nice project ! We came out with exactly the same solution for Power-up/down the marquee and sound. I've hacked a PowerStrip with a RELay ... Lol. :) Coincidence. :) Check out my project on my YouTube Channel too ! :)
hey man can u upload your custom MAME menu/interface like wht u have on 7:31 its awesome and i would really like to use it in my cab thanks in advance
I like that these joysticks are physically 4-way or 8-way depending on how you switch them and the feel is great. Switching them from the top of the panel is a breeze, too, so I'd say they definitely were worth the extra money.
Thanks on the MameWAH layout! I really like MameWAH. I looked at Maximus, but one thing I like about MameWAH is that it's not branded, unlike Maximus. Which means my cab looks like *my* cab, and not just something using some software I bought.
How are those joysticks? You wouldn't believe how many times I've had people play pac-man and bitch about the 8-way stick. How do they feel? Without trying to be biased. Are they like the Happ sticks or a totally different feeling? Another thing I really liked was your Mamewah FrontEnd. Really nice design. I always thought Mamewah was really bad, but I just didn't have the patience to go through with it, so I went with Maximus. Great cab. but let me know on the sticks.
hey what is the name and brand of your 4/8 way joysticks.

This looks way better than those guys who have a full computer in the back rather than just the computers motherboard PCB set and hard drive.
