Saw them in Tavistock on Friday. What lovely guys - had the pleasure of hanging out with them and a special after show piano recital from Thijs. One of the best days of my life. I have seen all of the great jazz/rock guys..RTF, metheny, Scofield, Di meola and these guys are up there with them. Such a joy to see Pierre back where he belongs..Thijs is a one off!! brilliant, brilliant man with a big heart!...... and check out Niels on guitar ! Wow!! LOVE FOCUS BIG TIME!!
I saw Focus last night.. my jaw dropped when Pierre did his solo piece. He was awesome. Had a nice chat with him afterwards, he's so gracious when paid a compliment. Said drums in his blood and played since a child. I'll never forget it. He drummed so fast you couldnt see the sticks, and i was only 20 feet away. Great to find this as a nice reminder. But he was way better last night if that is possible?? cheers x
Really good to see a group from the 70s still writing and playing excellent new songs and reworking their old stuff to keep it fresh instead of becomming a tribute group to themselves :-)
Pierre Van Der Linden is a fantastic drummer - very under-rated. He borrows heavily from his jazz experience - this is technically an extremely advanced solo :-o
I could not agree more with oliasdoug! Pierre is still as powerful and fluid as ever.He is such an inspiration to me and many other drummers around the world.Joey Pafumi
He is underrated by the drumming community at large, at least here in the U.S. I'm curious what Buddy Rich would have thought of him - I'll bet he would have been impressed!
Focus seems to be a great learning school for Niels van der Steenhoven. I love the little, funky licks he adds, like at 1:29
Pierre van der Linden always has been one of my favourite drummers. Fantastic how he combines lots of styles, which he plays disciplined and at the same with a loose, passionate feel, while always serving the song.
This is video proof that the drummer is always the hardest worker in the band. The untrained ear might think this solo sounds like a bunch of drunks stumbling through a lumber yard (at times) but in fact it is a solo from a true rhythmic artist and nothing less. Encore Encore Pierre
I just saw Focus live on 27th April at Cox's Yard in Stratford-upon-Avon, and they're all bloody amazing!
I thought that because the guitarist and bassist were the younger ones, that they wouldn't be great, but I was really impressed. The bassist did a solo where he was tapping stuff, drum solos were stunning too.
In-bloody-credible. 36 years after MOVING WAVES and Pierre's still got it. Right up there with Lenny White, Alex Acuna, Gerry Brown, Clive Bunker, Bill Bruford, ALL the great prog drummers. WOW!
Thanks, Pierre for the INSPIRATION & JOY ! May God give You good health and strength to carry on !

This song was amazing without bthe drum solo, with it it is a master piece. Wonderful stuff by Pierre and the rest of the band. Top marks.

For a moment there I thought his drum kit was ready to collapse from all that ferocious soloing! A true all-around musician, Pierre van der Linden.
