No. Amtrak heads north over the old Santa Fe mainline.to La junta, Colorado then east to Kansas city. The Transcon goes east from Dailies to Belen NM then to Amarillo, TX.
I've never personally traveled on those... but as far as time wise, BNSF is much more forgiving time wise than UP is...so if you are on an Amtrak train using the UP line, you're really screwed...I was only 5 mins late arriving into Flagstaff and actually 35 mins EARLY coming back to Chicago.... LOVE IT!
Yes. This is the cutoff from the BNSF Trancon to the old Sante Fe mainline to Albuquerque and over Raton Pass. The route follows the Old Sante Fe trail as does I 25 to Colorado.
Very Kewl vid!! I'm gonna have to go there one of these days. Nice to see the pole lines and signal bridges are still up. Everywhere west of Dalies it's all masts. I miss the old ATSF.

How would you compare the Southwest Chief trip to Empire Builder or California Zephyr? (if you've been on those, that is)

A correction on my reference to the signal bridges, it would be more like the Gantry Signals. The signals are probably the last remnants of the ATSF.
