It is clear that those in politics have no idea of the relevance and importance of educating our children about design from an early age. For most of our engineers, designers, technicians and technologists, it lays the foundations of the skill set required to go into that industry. DT is probably the most relevant course towards doing an actual job. I cannot understand the thought of removing it, it shows a gross retardation in the thinking & understanding of our political leaders.
wile7, you're right about the misconception about design and technology, which stems back to where the subject has it's origins. Most adults don't understand what the subject is all about, which is, as you rightly state in your comment.
This is so true. I don't agree about CAD (sketching is a key skill here too) but I do support the key message that Design is crucial for our the future. The mistake often made is that 'DT' is about manufacture; it isn't. It is simply the icing on a very large cake. Design education is about thinking skills, about creativity and about applying key subject knowledge to solving problems; artistic, scientific, mathematical, historical, business and linguistic skills are prerequisites here.
