  • gives me chills every time i listen to it. such a great arrangement!

  • this was breathtaking.

  • Amazing. The Spirit is so strong. Thank you for sharing. I know that the Lord will speak to all people through music if we allow ourselves to listen. Thank you for allowing myself to do so. :)

  • I thought this was interesting. It's about two hymns based on Nephi's Psalm, this one "I love the Lord" as well as another one. Thanks for sharing this wonderful music!

  • Lame.

  • @ggashsplash you're just jealous ;D

  • Oh. MY. GOONESS. This is good stuff.... powerful powerful words....

  • yes it was; president Hinckley had just given the talk on cleanliness. "your late" "but I'm clean, I'm clean". good memories from my mission.

  • could someone post what session of conference this was (probably a priesthood session)

  • men's choirs ROCK. zero dislikes. WOW

  • @vendingdudes That probably has more to do with everyone here watching it being LDS than it does with the quality of the choir. Which, admittedly is amazing in any case. But if it weren't amazing you still would have clicked like.

  • @Porojukaha no, if it sucked I would have clicked dislike, like your comment....

  • I love this song, and the normal "Be Still My Soul". They're beautiful songs that I sing when I feel depressed. :)

  • Go Mormons!!!

  • This is a pretty hymn! I loved it from day one when I heard it.

  • This song is a Spiritual bomb...

  • I started crying 15 seconds in. So beautiful

  • Love this song

  • This is a Sibelius composition, a composer and the national hero of Finland. Always remember that the stirring melody of this song rallied the entire nation of Finland to defend themselves from the invading army of Russia! And the Russians backed off! The title of the lyrics sung in this melody is "Finland Awake"!

  • Katharine von Schlegel wrote the words to this hymn during the 17th century, 100 years before The Book of Mormon even existed. She based the words off of Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." I just don't know how she could have any intention of it being anything relating to 2 Nephi 4 if 2 Nephi was not written until a century later...years after von Schlegel had died. I love this hymn and this arrangement.

  • @joelpilon True. But if you will notice, these are not the original lyrics. This is an alternate version based on 2 Nephi 4, sung to the tune of Be Still My Soul by Katharine von Schlegal.

  • @joelpilon There are many hymns that you can sing with different arrangements, and even mix and matched music with lyrics. Try it! Its actually very neat when you can find the ones that match up and make them work. Ill pull up some examples and share them at a later time.

  • @joelpilon, you can do that as long as they have the same meter. The LDS hymnbook has the meters listed in the back so you can mix and match.

  • @joelpilon ....This isn't "Be Still My Soul" though. It's the Sibelius tune, but different words than the original. This is just what Isolation1 said, a different set of words with the same syllable structure. For example: God Save the Queen and My Country, 'Tis of Thee have the same melody. :)

  • @joelpilon Um Bud you are incorrect. The Book of Mormon was not written after the 17th century but it was translated into English after the 17th century.

  • @OtakuDeju assuming the tablets existed before the 1820's when Joseph Smith found them. All depends on one's opinion on the legitimacy of the book of mormon. But this is not the place for religious debates.

  • @joelpilon Someday your tongue will confess too. The stone that was cut without hands and rolled forth until it filled the whole earth is the Book of Mormon. Now my question when will you do this thing?

  • @OtakuDeju Daniel was a wise prophet indeed.

  • @joelpilon What makes you think she had any intention of it relating to 2 Nephi? And who suggested that? She obviously wrote hers based on Psalm 46:10 as a reference. Many years later, Ronald Staheli came along and did is own rendition with 2 Nephi 4 as the reference. I dont understand how you are trying to link the two. 2 Nephi was actually written long before Katharine Von Schlegel was ever around, but it was translated in the 1800's.

  • @Isolation1 Because you said it was a paraphrase. That implies she did it on purpose, my brother :)

  • @joelpilon The lyrics to this song, "I Love The Lord," were written by John S. Tanner (who was born in 1950). The music is from Jean Sibelius's "Finlandia," and the piece itself was arranged by Ronald Staheli. Taylor actually wrote an article about coming up with the lyrics to this song and finding an appropriate piece of music to go with it, it's called "Two Hymns Based on Nephi's Psalm." You can just Google it.

  • @joelpilon the book of mormon was not written 100 years later, merely translated. The book of mormon was written thousands of years before by prophets living in the americas.

  • @joelpilon the book of mormon was not written 100 years later, merely translated 100 years later.

  • @joelpilon , the melody is the hymnal portion of Finlandia Op. 26 by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, which he wrote in 1899. There are versions of Finlandia on YouTube; the hymnal portion is near the end of it. You're correct that the lyrics are by Katharina von Schlegal written in 1752 and translated by Jane Borthwick in 1855. Of course, Schlegel's intent was referencing the Book of Psalms. Regardless, a very spiritually powerful piece of music beloved by many of different faiths.

  • @joelpilon Actually, the words to this are different than the words penned by katharine von Schlegel. The lyrics here are from 2 Nephi 4 of the book of mormon. Katharine von Schlegel wrote the words to "Be Still My Soul". Just thought you should know.

  • @joelpilon Sorry, this is 100% wrong. Schlegel wrote the text to the hymn "Be Still, My Soul." Like the above song, Schlegel's text is most often sung to Sibelius' famous tune, "Finlandia." The above text is not Schlegel's; it is a modern paraphrase of a text from the "Book of Mormon." I can't remember the poet's name, but he was definitely still living. I know this because I was in the choir above and the name on the sheet music was nothing like "Schlegel."

  • @joelpilon Katharine von Schlegel wrote the words to the poem "Be Still My Soul" based on the Psalm 46:10. Yes. However, these are not those words. The music was written by Jean Sibelius who lived 1865-1957. Ronald Staheli adapted the text from 2 Nephi 4 to this music. Listen to it and be moved by the Spirit of God.

  • WOW.... that is all I can say. . . absolutely beautiful! I had chills almost the whole song. Thank you for putting this up! I love my LORD.

  • I could listen to this all day every day. Simply beautiful in every way!

  • If you can please contact me, I am a choir director and I have the song Be still my Soul but would really like this version of the Lyrics..thank you and God Bless.

  • @liljoe802 I posted the lyrics with this song. As you are viewing the video, look below it, you may have to expand the box but it contains all the lyrics. Thank you!

  • Yay music!

  • EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW, EVERY TONGUE CONFESS THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST. Let it be known.

  • This song can always bring tears to my eyes. Dr. Staheli is such an incredible arranger, and the choir sounds phenomenal. This made me want to join the BYU choirs.

  • @makingaccountforyou Oh, wow. I didn't know i prayed to joseph smith! This whole time i've been praying to God, and I never knew. I should start listening to people who aren't me to tell me what i believe! especially the ones that don't belong to the LDS church; they really know what we teach. God bless you, makingaccountforyou.

  • Satan wants everyone to hate each other, which is exactly what you're doing. I don't knock your religion so why knock mine. It doesn't matter if your, Muslim, Jewish, Catholic, or even Athiest, God still loves you even if you don't really deserve it.

  • @Goobs7 everyone deserves His love- if we saw eachother as he does than we would bow down and worship eachother.. and find the cure for hatred.

  • Sorry but only the Lord is worthy of worship. That's whats amazing about His love, that not being worthy of ANYTHING He died for us...we are but insects in His presence, but through His blood we are made princes. God bless you.

  • @liljoe802 Man are far more than insects in the presence of the lord: We are his children, he made it possible for eatch and evry one of us to live happily on the earth, which is ordained for the use of man. Never the less he gave eatch and evry one of us free agency to choose wether we want to obey or fall. Our father in heaven wants us to be like him someday, which is why he gave us the same agency which he holds.

  • Oh let me shake at the first sight of sin! One of my favorite lyrics ever! What a gorgeous song performed perfectly. I remember hearing it in conference and feeling the spirit as strong as I had ever felt it in my life!

  • how do i get a copy of this song?

  • I watched this performance during the priesthood session, and it was so powerful and moving. I still think of it as a great spiritual experience that left me better than before I heard it. I especially love the text.

  • This is amazing. Definitely and infinitely has the spirit intertwined in every word.

  • we are singing this in church soon, and hopefully seminary!

  • We sang this piece at our Stake Choir concert this past Easter. This song was amazing.

  • Actually Katharine von Schlegel wrote the Lyrics to "Be Still My Soul" this was a new arrangement based upon the "Psalm of Nephi" taken from the 2nd book of Nephi 4th chapter in the Book of Mormon.

  • test

  • Hey Go To: 3:30... it looks like the guy on the far left is yelling into the other guys air. LOL ear.

  • Very beautiful!

  • I know this sounds a bit sexist, but I enjoy listening to men's choirs more than women's or SATB choirs.

  • Thank you so much for sharing...absolutely beautiful arrangement!

  • They are singing at the LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake City.

  • where r they singing

  • Wow, that was powerful. Such great lyrics to a great music. I love that chapter in the book of Nephi. Truly moving.

  • This is definately one of the greatest arrangements I have ever heard...

I love the connection to Nephis psalm..does anyone know who arranged this?

  • Ronald Stahlei, head of choirs at Brigham Young University.

  • Arranged by Ronald Staheli,

    originally by Jean Sibelius

Poetic paraphrase of 2 Nephi 4 by John S. Tanner

  • Arranged by Ronald Staheli

    Originally by Jean Sibelius

  • Our Heavenly Father will tell us the truth of all things if we pray sincerely and with an open heart without any anger and hate. If you do this, I promise that you will feel the Holy Ghost bearing witness to you that the Book of Mormon is true along with the Bible. The Book of Mormon is *another* Testament of Jesus Christ.

  • Good! I am very sorry to hear that you have been cast out by your family, but im glad to hear that you have a good relationship with our Father in heaven! He loves us all, make sure you hold to that!

Ronald Staheli is the Choral and Conducting Division Coordinator and the Director of Graduate Studies in Choral Music at BYU. He *Arranged* this piece. He didnt steal the lyrics from Katharina, they come from the 4th chapter of 2nd Nephi in the Book of Mormon.

  • The church uses the King James version of the bible. Joseph Smith was instructed to re-translate critical parts of the bible, he didnt re-write the entire book. The verses in the bible we use is identical to any other King James version of the bible, and the retranslated versus are *Cross-Referenced* to the*back* of the book. If you think we have re-written the bible because we cant read it,

  • ... you must be thinking of the *New International Version* used by many other religions. I personally believe that copy is useful, but should not be our main reference.

Keep up your personal relationship with our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ! We can always turn to them!

  • The words can be found in 2 Nephi 4, the Psalm of Nephi.

  • This song is amazing...
