this isnt as bad as the story i was told about how on the way home from the war, troops would throw their M1 rifles off the deck in celebration, and BRAND NEW WILLYS JEEPS were pushed off the side into the ocean. BRAND NEW!!
The reason why they sank them is because after the war, they didn't want to bring them back to the states, so the staff on hand had orders to sell them to locals, who didn't bid because they knew we'd just leave them there, so the commanders dumped them in the water thinking that if you don't want to pay for them, then no one get's them
ok jojo29 but there are good dive story sites on the web also. Try the myscubastory site. They have lots of true diving stories and some graphic dive accident videos! Type myscubastory into google and its the first one.
There is a cove in the Orote Point area where peices of that stuff wash up during typhoons. Among the things I've seen on the beach are a stainless steel exhaust manifold from a radial aircraft engine, a grille from a Bantam (1st generation Jeep), the chassis of a deuce 'n a half, about a 30 foot length of a piece of a small vessel's hull. I also found a pre or post war Coca-Cola bottle from the San Francisco bottler. Guam has bottled their own Coke since the 1950's, I believe.
I'm adding to what two others have posted here. My father in law, Joe Horton, went to Guam after WW-II to work civil service. He put in 30+years, with the last years at Apra Harbor running a NW 80.
He said after the war they ran Cat's, road graders, jeeps and whatever over a cliff into the ocean. On some of the Cats, all they would do was start the starting motor(gas powered)and let it walk the Cat over the cliff. He said they had Marines standing guard to make sure it all went over!
My father was stationed there after the war and said it was cheaper for the military to just dump the items instead of shipping them back to the U.S. where they would not be used anyway.
Woah! My dad use to tell me stories about how when he was stationed in Guam, how he would scuba dive around old military vehicles like jeeps, and tanks. He said the US drove them off of cliffs into the sea because it would be cheaper to make new ones rather them ship them back. That is just SO awesome!
I was told by my father was in charge of the Communications Station after the war (I was born there) He watched them push all of the extra tanks, tractor, trucks, jeeps, etc. into the ocean as it was cheaper then sending them back to the U.S. as they were not needed anymore by the Army anyway - and they had been sitting there just rusting away, but still usable.
@251rocker Almost all countries lost equipment over the side of ships in WW2. Its well know when you must escape or retreat you make room for people rather than equipment. American forces did the same thing with helicopters off the coast of Vietnam in the early seventies.
@251rocker even in veitman they disposed of this kinda stuff. helicopters, tanks, cannons. the war was over or they had to much weight. helluva waste if u ask me.
THANK YOU. MY GRANDFATHER FOUGHT THEIR BATTLES @ 2nd OF GUAM & ALSO IWO JIMA- I AM DECENT OF SURVIVOR, SO THEN AGAIN I ASK THE IGNORANT- WHAT THE F*UCK ARE YOU FIGHTING 4? you don't want to battle.....THEIR WAR
As several people have pointed out, THESE ARE NOT TANKS. They are Cats. Amongst many other things, the tracks are completely different.

I would restore them all. But there is one problem, if you try to start the engine, you might flood it! Thumbs up if you agree
