@bladerizer The quality of the engines isn't bad. I have got two of them, a D161 and the biggest model at the moment, the D24 el. The engine in the video - a D10 - is also available as a kit for self assembly, which is called D9. So it could be possible that he made this engine.
@banditpredator Yeah, I might have generalized here... I have read some negative feedback from users, that's why. Maybe all Wilescos aren't that bad, maybe only some are. I personally think their design is very nice.
And yes, I actually read the description after posting. Shouldn't have done that. Sorry.
Anyway, I've now realised via bodging that I can get this to run a D.C. motor backwards: making a generator. I'll try and get some stuff together to make something usefull.. Anyone got any decent ideas of what a small generator could run?
yes i do, you could run some LED's or a small pcoket radio or replace the batary of an old mobile phone and connect the generator to it, if you want more just give a jell, Joe
lmao, i had one of them, first one i ever had (it was my teahcers, he lent it me) and i didnt let the pressure off and i took the safety vaulve off to add water, and the boiler emtied its contents onto my face, sending the safety vaulve off like a rocket,... never saw it again, lucky we had a spare in the box :S
"there we go!.. there we go!" haha sounded like you invented a time machine or something LOL but is that thing fully custom? it did break but pretty impressive if you made it from ground up. keep em commin =)
I rest my case. what do you hope to achieve? again, I am quite happy to be corrected in ANY way, but you aren't exactly being coherent here. AGAIN, I ask humbly for your opinion.
Well pardon my mistake then, but ultimately it is irrelevant. The fact is, if you don't like a video, or it's subject, or for that matter the nationality of the person posting it, You don't have to announce it to the whole world, certainly not in that sort of tone. I'm perfectly happy to apologise for whatever and however I have seemingly offended you...
You're ignorant and offensive. Most Canadians are the opposite. If you're Canadian, you are one tenth of one percent and I'm sorry and apologize to humanity on your behalf.
I don't much care for your attitude. If you have nothing relevant to say, do it somewhere else. I haven't exactly gone to your channel and said "stupid american people"
hmm, lets see, I got mine for £75ish, which is around $150... but you have to bear in mind that these things are mostly hand made/supervised... and also in germany, and not in some oriental country where they pay the workers $5 a year or something...
Yes, It is quite expensive... however, I saw it selling for nearly $200 on certain websites, so this was relatively cheap. I don't really trust ebay, and the ones on it looked a little knocked up.
Oh, and the idea was to specifically get a steam engine which I could build from the ground up - the idea of steam technology has always enchanted me - though I agree that a hit and miss would be MUCH more practical :(
yeah, one of the screws on teh flywheel housing had been omitted by my friend (i was doing the boiler housing bit) but we only found out after it died :(
firstly, Im using pliers because the guy who sold it to me told me to, and secondly the little whistly thing isnt very well designed: the exhaust vents straight onto your fingers... and thirdly, I had previously burnt my fingers trying to fiddle with the whistle while it was heating up, and was not wanting to repeat the whole spectacle of amusing everyone in the room but runnign round clutching my finger and swearing :)
the 7 1/4" gauge loco I drive does that when you pull the whistle chain. My fingers are so roughened up through driving locos now I can do it without a rag!
A rag!, of course, how could i be so stupid... and apart from that stunning revelation I've just had a rather good idea for some sort of steam-proof gauntlet... thank you for that! :)
Yeah I did, after I cuffed the head of my friend and screwed all th ebolts together properly it ran like a dream, made a really wonderful sound as well and also had enough power left to drive simple lego machinery, through a gearbox.
Actually, a friend came round and insisted that he build the engine housing. However, he was too "manly" to use the instructions and left out the screws for the flywheel bracket. Needless to say, I was slightly angry after this video was taken
You can get older Mamods off ebay for around 30 pounds upwards. Sometimes cheaper. They are miles and miles higher in build quality and have a great charm about them.
I personally don't think Wilesco are that good, a bit cheapy. But they can run ok. I wouldn't use plyers on the whistle, wrap a cloth around your fingers.
with that glass tray are you getting ready to put it in the oven?

You really think he made this engine?
It's a Wilesco, for crying out loud. They are known for their bad quality and also they can and will break when not taken care of properly.
And by the way, I'm quite surprised how nobody even thought of removing the burner in the first place.

@jonnotantan You can power some LED lamps or a small ventilator or anything like that.
Some guy here does charge his phone with his Wilesco!
But it seems, Your engine needs to be repaired. If I see it right, the crankshaft has become loose.
The machine should run much more smooth, even because it is an older "grayplate" machine. Usualy they run pretty smooth!
