  • Grace Chang was signed to the MP & GI studio which was based in Hong Kong. This studio mainly aims for showcasing modernity and urbanized lifestyles. And certainly those songs did not have to go through Mao. lol

  • Crazy and elegant combined so perfect via her version.

I love her, she is my model.

  • incredible

  • This is a great version. Thank-you for posting. Love the Chinese/English combo. It appears this was recorded three years before Georgia Gibbs version, is this correct? Also, where would this song have been recorded? I can't imagine Chairman Mao would have been too keen on a song like this being recorded in mainland China.

  • @magog77

Thank you. Youre' welcome. I believe Chang's rendition recorded at Shanghai and came out in 1957. As you know, Shanghai is not a typical big cities like the rest of that old country back then. Shanghai was an East and West met, full of western influenced kind of metapolitan. Back in those day, it considered as 靡靡之音, which is meant decadent music and not that much accepted by the society at that time. Old China rated songs with so called 5 colors classification. This one is Yellow.

  • @boogetman65 This song was not recorded in Shanghai. 葛蘭(Ge Lan or Grace Chang) was born in Shanghai in 1933 but moved to Hong Kong in 1949. She was in Clark Gable's 1955 film "Soldier of Fortune" and was on NBC's Dinah Shore show in 1959. She has a record by Capitol in 1961: "Hong Kong's Grace Chang : The Nightingale of the Orient" She retired in 1964 and is currently (2011) living in China. I like her rendition even more than the Gibbs version.
