I hope they'll play Orchid entirely live one day! One of the best albums ever along with Slaughter of the Soul from At The Gates and The Gallery from Dark Tranquillity.
@0nl1n3n00b Gotcha, thanks for the reply. Just saw them in Atlanta. Was a totally clean (no growls) vocal performance. Played a lot of stuff from Heritage. I have a few vids posted on my page, including the opener, The Devil's Orchard, in HD. Not too agressive with the show, but was still a blast!
I think that Mikael is phazing out his growls, in favor of his cleaner vocals, for good. Man, I hope I'm wrong, but I'm still a huge fan. Thanks.
Peter told me a funny story about the guitar in this video. He said it was actually a King V when he bought it. Someone stole it, and cut it to make it look like a Rhodes possibly so no one would recognize it? I can't really remember but either him or a friend went to a show and saw a guy using his guitar and he knew it was his because all other Rhodes at the time had those black control plates on the front. He called the cops and ended up getting the guitar back only slightly altered haha
@turbocamps hahaha i know, but that's what he told me. Seems so bizarre, but that's also why I remember it. Unfortunately he's not in the band anymore for you to confirm. But he also told me his gf at the time is on the cover of MAYH. In the middle of the cover where the purple triangle shaped part is. Just to the right there's that lil purple spot. In the original unaltered photo that spot is her face and you can kinda make out a face on the cover. That's the first thing I notice now.
this is the REAL Opeth. The parts that Johan and Anders wrote for the first 2 albums are far better than anything Lopez and Mendez wrote. Mendez and Lopez may have written parts that were more "technical" but technicality is no substitute for style and feel. It's a shame they don't play anything off Orchid anymore. i was quite disappointed with their performance of "under the weeping moon" on that anthology tour. I lost all interest in this band after Peter left.
@Monumentum616 Totally! I just listened to this album and read the lyrics, it all seems to be a metaphor for dying, the woman in the mist a symbol of death, her black candle representing his fading life.
@seeminglyjaded Yeah, they were awesome. I always felt like his old vocals were much more ethereal and haunting. The old albums felt much more atmospheric to me. I love all Opeth, but IMO the first two albums can't be beaten.
@idshanks That's fucking right man!!!! There's some fucking fans that couldn't accept that. But man you r a true metal head and you know what you r talking about.
Respond to this video... From the 7:00 to the end, it gives the song and atmosphere of WW II....Soldiers in the Bulge, dodging bullets walking among the corpses, in the cold forest....And ultimately to their own demise...It gives me chills
04:05 - 04:20 is one of my favorite Opeth-riffs ever. It's very easy to play, but it's beautiful and dark at the same time. Amazing!

Is that Mendez and Lopez on Bass and Drums? So much fuckin' hair, I can't tell.
jonesy97 4 months ago
@jonesy97 Back then it was Johan DeFarfalla on bass and Anders Nordin on Drums. Lopez and Mendez joined the band a few years later.

@turbocamps also, search for old pictures with him and that V, you'll notice it has 24 frets. Rhoads V's only have 22 ; )

Too bad you can't really hear the bass at the 6:30 part in this. It's one of my favorite parts of the song.
Cool to watch a video this old still.

i feel exactly the same way! old opeth (candlelight era) is very atmospheric, then they become more and more progressive.
