Alice was put in a mental institute because she could see things in the future, and in those days it was unheard of. An anonymous vampire in the institute cared about her and changed her, as James was hunting her. In twilight she can't remember who changed her, and this is because she was in darkness when the change occurred. She realises what actually happened when James explains too Bella in the ballet studio and James tells her how Alice is the only person that ever escaped him.

Sorry guys, I'm kind of "rolling on the floor laughing" right now. I mean, the acting is SO bad, namely with the guy who plays Jasper. Stewart is just a blank slate as usual, and her and Greene's wigs really stand out. I haven't seen the entire movie so I won't pass judgement on it, but just going with this clip...it looks really cheesy. A "B" movie made on a 50 million dollar budget. But hey, at least everyone involved is making money lol.

@BattyKatty35 well he's from the Civil War Era so that's probably how he picked up the accent and it makes sense that he goes in an out of if seeing as he's so old so it might have been a bit worn out that's what happens to my uncle who is originally from Aotearoa. It also makes sense that it comes out more when he is remembering Maria and his past due to sensory memory and whatnot. Besides Jasper barely talked in the other movies.
