As someone who grew up in the bay area, in particular the East Bay (Oakland, San Leandro, Berkeley area), I can tell you there's a huge anarchist / black bloc contingency represented. I also know that there's a lot of youth just looking to "fuck shit up" (as we also saw with the Oscar Grant protests). Bottom line is that some of these "anarchists" are likely provocateurs working for either the OPD or other authority agencies. It's a problem that the bay area is facing, violent youth going wild.
