Because spas 12 are really picky on ammo that you can shoot in semi auto slug and buckshot but birdshot has to be heavy lead need a full load of powder to work right

The Luigi Franchi SPAS 12 (also the SPAS 15 and the PA3) In Italy was available both in pump / semi-auto (it came from the Franchi's factory in this version): it is considered by italian law as an hunting sporting pourpose shotgun not military; I apologize for my bad english.

@zs7iey The Civilian versions are Pump only but the SPAS 12 is both pump and semi-auto. Designed that way so that you can switch to pump action in order to chamber a specialized round like gas, stinger, breaching round plus various other special and less-lethal rounds. While it's size is it's biggest drawback, this does allow for a whopping 8 rounds and also makes the gun very intimidating. If someone shoves that in your face and says "DON'T MOVE!", you freeze faster than Jim Carrey in the mask

I was referring to the fact that military shotguns have always been based on the civilian ones that were pump only and that the SPAS was a huge leap forward as it didn't follow this norm and was actually designed with military\police in mind.
