People, the title clearly says one year of the Moon, not that of the Earth. The Earth goes around the Sun in approx. 365 Earth-days, the Moon goes around the Earth in approx. 30 Earth-days.
@juanarruti Im not 100% sure on this, but with the exception of man made satellites, almost all objects in space orbit in an elliptical path. This includes comets, asteriods, meteors, moons, planets, and even stars. Its because gravity between these objects interact with eachother, and throw off the potential for a perfect circular path.
BS The rate ate which the shadow moves across the moon is to fast if this was pictures strung together of photos taken every hour. Shame on me if you fool me twice.
@EuRoViSi0n2010 It is actually the moon. I cant tell because you can only see one side of the moon. (we can never see the far side of the moon so there is never really a dark side...
So this was probably for a month and then copied and pasted,
@MattBlytheTheOne it does rotate, but we always see the same side because it is locked to the earth with gravity. It takes around 27.5 days for the moon to rotate once, the same amount of time it takes to orbit the Earth. This is not a coincidence: the moon is actually shaped like a football and most of its weight is on the earth side so gravity pulls more on the heavy side keeping it facing earth.
Dear NASA: Thanks for making this video. Now I can tell the crescent moon from the waning moon without looking at a calendar (note for self: the moon's illumination rotates right to left).
I'm a little bit disappointed it didn't explode, after all that. Why on Earth would NASA make it wobble, without a big explosion at the end? Doesn't the DOE have some massive laser facility now, that they could point at the moon and show the NASA boys how it's done?
@chuckarama451 I think you have not understood the meaning of the video. It shows the natural movements of the moon relative to Moon and Earth orbits. Differences in moon size and wobbling are visible in such time-lapse videos only.
BTW The moon has laser facilities, left by the Apollo missions, and they are used for determining the distance, with centimeter precision. Making the moon explode via laser shot - that's a crazy idea, already abandoned for much closer targets.
@PC01011 Heh. Indeed. I think you have misunderstood my sarcasm and sense of humor a bit. It probably just wasn't that funny to begin with... It is indeed a VERY impressive sequence.
Where are the eclipses of 2011 in this animation? In 2011 there are three solar and two lunar eclipses. SInce the animation contains hourly images, and since each eclipse lasts several hours, there's no way to "escape" the eclipses if you want the animation to be realistic.
Unfortunately, we will for now, never know whats on the other side. Without going deep into a conspiracy speculation. Grainy and Edited pictures are excepted.. however.
Obviously its not all of 2011 as its only June...lol. Very cool to see the moon like this over time for a full year..what month did it start and what month did it stop (obviously sometime between Jan - June 2011)
Was this from the observatory in Maui, as its obviously above the cloud layer?
the 'dark' side of the moon is a misnomer. half the moon is always facing the sun. when we see the 'new' moon from the earth (i.e. the side facing us is dark) then the 'dark' side of the moon is actually fully lit.
@OregonDARRYL The "dark side" of the moon isn't really dark ALL of the time because the moon orbits around the Earth and the side facing away from us does get the same amount of sunlight as the side that faces us. It can be as cold as -153C during the lunar night, or as hot as 107C during the lunar day.
Orbital drunk? I don't think so. Drunkards are ugly, pathetic, useless creatures. The moon is beautiful, inspirational (think about the Moonlight Sonata, or the countries that display an image of the crescent moon on their national flags) and very useful to the mankind (moon gives us light at night, it gave us the calendar based on lunar cycles, and the moon protects earth by attracting asteroids that would otherwise hit us). I wish all drunkards would be as productive as the moon.
