By putting your hands on your ears it is possible to control your voice better.
Also Bilal Habesi, the first ezan reader, put his hands on his ears when he recited ezan.When you try yorself you will also notice that, I´m sure.

he put's his hands on his ears so he can hear his voice and a slow reader that reads good is better than a fast reader that reads whit mistakes.
