Beautiful performance by Mosuc, and I loved the coldness of the scenery and her makeup, a whole new perspective that fits the classic! Better than those dresses full of colors and those stages that look like a cheap high school play.
Tempo too slow, but at least she sings the grace note to the four 16th notes, which hardly anyone does. Her Fs were in a different place from the rest of her high notes.
Doesn't anybody find it a little bit odd how long Pamina waits before screaming "Mutter!" I mean...everybody I show this to cracks up at that. As if the fridge/wind/zuruck doesn't wake her up....but her mom just standing there, um, does.
I think this is too slow. The tempo makes the leaps to the Fin the first section and the D in the second section (not to mention the triplet section) sound way too labored and...note by note..
I think the association is supposed to be with cold and ice rather than food. Her makeup is supposed to resemble ice. I think the gorilla at the beginning and the mother coming out of the fridge are supposed to be like a bad dream. Things often don't make sense in a dream.
why is she coming out of the fridge???? That's my only question...why a fridge? I don't really think that there's anything in the score that would lead to an association with food...there had to be a better modern piece to use with it.
i think the dialogue is very quick, almost "Gilmore Girls" (no offense). There is much cut out here.. it should be tense, not hurried. otherwise, I like the modernization.
Yes, of course. Where do you keep your knives normally? Into the fridge. And why, oh why, is the Queen a blond? And... No, I can't carry on. This set is soooo horribly wrong...
What was with the gorilla at the beginning? That makes the knife in the refrigerator almost normal. Stimmt... die Königin hat sich zu viel Botox ins Gesicht eingespritzt. The Botox also slowed down her triplets toward the end. She sounded more sleepy than mad. Thanks for posting, though!
why is the knife in the refrigerator? lol Is that a German thing, or are they just trying to be wierd? Anyway, the singing is really good, but the Queen looks like she's had too much botox.
I think it is a trend in Germany and Austria now, to make all Operas extremly modern, very simple and "wierd". Personaly I don't like, i think opera is not only about music (even if it is of course the most important thing), but is is also about the whole thing together.
This version is so weird, but I actually thought it worked, strangely enough. I don't usually care for Elena Mosuc, but I thought she was really strong in this video.
poor acting + bad diction + good voice + great look = average performance

no, this is the normal tempo.
ozkr08 4 years ago
Normal? What is the 'normal' tempo? The score says 'allegro', which means 'lively'. This rendition wasn't very lively.
RossiniSoprano 4 years ago
en realiad me refería en el tempo de la opera, ese es el tempo original.

Especially considering Mozart didn't have a metronome to rely on to write down his tempi.

I think it's very interesting to see how different actors play the queen of the night totally different.
It's a shame that I can't see which one is good... :(

i'll recommend to you diana dambrau, look for it as diana dambrau queen of the night. that's my favorite

I love Mosuc. She is a great Queen of the Night! But the sets and staging totally ruin the effect of the aria.

WELL DUH IRENE!!! WHERE THE HELL DO YOU KEEP YOUR KNIVES?!!! A DRAWER?! PUH-LEASE....HOW BORING!
I always keep my knives at -18 degrees celsius. Makes them better for threatening my imaginary children with.

What is it? Too avantgard for me. Why does she sing this aria so slowly? It is not enjoyable. Ridiculous! :)
