  • the comment about guitar players sounded pretty ignorant

  • @MrVargasesteban You're not the first with that sentiment - lol. For the record, Clapton is God. Hope the point wasn't lost...

  • @eTrumpetLessons im a guitar player and i found it offensive, i don't care about clapton, but that's a good lesson anwyay

  • @ritahall69 i played tuba for marching band...i couldnt feel my face and it LOOKED like i was puncn the face

  • I've been buzzing on my trumpet for a long time and getting a horrible sound. I've been playing the trumpet for only one week by the way.

  • @Dilaxan123 It does get better. Not having the benefit of seeing or hearing you, I can't overemphasize - firm corners (bit not pinched in the center of the lips) and big breath. Maybe also think open throat and low tongue, especially on those loser notes. Like when the doc tells you to open & say aaaahh.

  • Thanks for this I totally forgot that it has to be an "m" when u buzz::::: i haven't reviewed the basics in quite a while (now i get to high G with ease like never before) thx thx thx

  • @whatevergodhasinstor For trumpet players of any level, a good 'getting back to basics' period now and then is always helpful. Keep it up!

  • I'm having a lot of trouble producing the clean sound, i can only make this high pitched noise, any tips?

  • @kdubongco Keep at it. With trumpet, getting a good sound is often a long process. Thing is, the better your sound gets and the better trumpet player you become, the more discriminating you get. It's an endless pursuit, but a noble one!

  • @eTrumpetLessons alright I definitely will! Thanks so much for the free lessons! I really appreciate them!

  • i just stared play the trumpet and this thing has taught me alot

  • Thank you for these lessons!!! My first lesson (today) went badly, but Im NOT GIVING UP. though, my lips feel like I was punched in the mouth LOL! Thanks Again =)

  • Your holding the trumpet wrong

  • I learned so much in this lesson. I can now actually make a consistent tone. It made me a bit sad when he made such a beautiful sound tho

  • Helped me alot

  • Thank you so much.Do you suggest me to practice with a pocket trumpet as a beginner?

  • Thanks for the tutorials, I am a high school senior and I have been receiving lessons from my previous seniors however their instructions were not so complete nor clear, but I hope to complete them and be able to teach my juniors the clearer way through your tutorials, thanks again~!

  • i just started learning the trumpet today and i am failing hard core. i can play a note but it sounds horrible. the trumpet is hard. 1 hour on 1 note for me and i still cant play it properly.

  • @biancadabomb The good news is, it gets better from here. Good luck!

  • @biancadabomb it was easy for me and i started today

  • I'm thinking of joining marching band for my school, and i was wanting to play the trumpet.

Is it a good beginner instrument?

  • @CAndVProductions1998 I bet the marching band would love to have you as a trumpet player. Marching and playing can be tricky, so get your trumpet basics down first - ideally with the support of the marching band.

  • You are a fantastic teacher. These videos are great. I am a guitar teacher myself, but recently decided to try out something completely different musically. I figured the Trumpet was a good instrument to take up given my love of jazz. Thanks for posting these videos!

  • im having a lot of trouble with the embochure... I get two different sounds from either side of my lips... and when I'm done I feel like I popped a couple of veins on my forehead. 'tis my first time trying it though so it must be a getting used to kind of thing

  • @whmozart Air or sound coming from the sides of the mouthpiece is a signal to tighten up the corners of your lips. Make sure to get all the air *through* the trumpet, not escaping to the sides. Try this: start without the trumpet, flatten your lips just a bit and blow gently as if you are blowing on your soup to cool it. Then increase the air volume and tighten the lips, and you're really close to the right concept.

  • @eTrumpetLessons thank you! the soup analogy helped and it's starting to sound... It takes some patience, but thank you for your help and vids! You're great!!

  • @eTrumpetLessons I tried this but all i get is a high pitched noise, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

  • @kdubongco You may be pinching in the center of your embouchure (the shape of you mouth when playing trumpet). Try opening up a bit, but make sure the corners stay firm, and you're blowing lots of air.

  • My trumpet sounds a bit different from yours, I am a bit concern about whether or not I am doing anything right.

  • @94karatekid There are several factors at work in someone's overall trumpet tone. Experience has a lot to do with it, as well as the specific anatomy of the trumpet player, the instrument, the mouthpiece, etc. That said, don't go crazy buying new mouthpieces or trumpets as you chase a better tone. For beginners, the biggest part of a good sound is really good air support. "Big breath, corners firm..." Keep at it!

  • you're awesome

  • Hey I bought my first trumpet today and found this video really useful! Will be sure to keep coming back for more :-) Thanks!

  • @mpod001 Sweet! Remember, if you want to receive these lessons in your email box along with my comments, sign up for the free trumpet lessons series on the eTrumpet Lessons web site. Good luck with the new trumpet!

  • thanks, this helped a lot!

  • Your eyes o.o

  • i usually play string instruments so im pretty lost to when it comes to horns

  • is this different than playing a pocket trumpet?

  • Try not to stare at those eyes :S

  • I've been playing the trumpet for 5 years and I'm good at it. Why am I watching this???? Here are the notes people I'll help you PM me if you have any questions: These are all the main notes: CDEFGABC *= open valve @= closed valve c= *** d= @*@ e= @@* f=@** g= *** a= @@* b= *@* c= ***
  • I play the flute as a beginner but my teacher said I would probably be good at the trumpet as well as the flute I just needed to practice my buzzing now I understand more how to do it this video really helped but those blue eyes are so................so.....................I can't even explain it they just look right through you and...................it's just so weird.................

  • I play trumpet but I can't do the (perrrrr sound with my lips)

  • I play clarinet will it be hard for me?

  • @Aznpwn14 am a trumpeter me thought that trumpet is best in ever

  • @Aznpwn14 I don't think playing the clarinet will affect how well you are at the trumpet. I played sax and I am getting used to trumpet pretty easily :]

  • @pterranadon how good* you are at the trumpet, sorry

  • I play clarinet and I want to play the trumpet. Will it be hard for me to play?

  • is that any different to how you would play a cornet ????

  • @marybat01 Exactly the same approach.

  • @marybat01 the cornet is the same notes but the cornet is lower notes i think

  • THANKS SO MUCH!

  • helpful video but i can't agree the point that you made at the beginning of the video. you said the guitar tone is pretty much determined by the instrument. well, there's a lot more to do for a beginner to get the tone of eric clapton. i play guitar for some years. i know and i can tell. you clearly don't understand much about guitar playing.

  • @youbadcrazyman Thanks for the input. You'll notice in the comments that many others share your view, and I've conceded that (especially to guitarists) I could've used a better analogy. Hopefully folks wanting to learn the trumpet can get past my analogy and understand my point that tone on a trumpet is determined almost entirely by physiological factors, whereas tone on other instruments are determined by mechanical factors.

  • @youbadcrazyman why is a guitarist watching beginning trumpet lessons? I'm sure a beginner could play eric clapton's set up and the "tone" would sound WAY more like eric clapton than a beginner picking up wynton marsalis's trumpet and sounding like wynton.

  • @jobjobjobjobjob Yes, *that's* the point. :-)

  • Why am i watching this.. I dont even play trumpet

  • @TheMisVEVO i'm just planning to learn and i'm watching this too!

  • Those eyes pierce my soul! But it is quite informative lol

  • Hi I have braces & I just got them in n they really hurt wen I play my trumpet at school since I have to tighten the corners of my lips so what can I do?

  • @ttjb20204 itll stop hurting after a couple days or up to two weeks i got braces in october and it hurted to play but then it stopd but thennn i had to get use to playing with then if u press to hard itll still kinda of hurt and the wire might pop out or something in october our highschool football season started and palying and marching with fresh braces hurts badly but anyway itll stop soon

  • @ttjb20204 keep practicing!!!!ive had braces for 1 1/2 years and ive gotten much better. sooner or later your tone will start to become normal again. give it some time and keep practicing and you'll be fine.

  • An add on to pressing your trumpet against your face too hard results in your teeth going inwards.

  • I'm having trouble making the buzzing noise :/ i tried spitting and doing letter M... i have to blow a lot of air in order to make it and its not constant. Although with the trumpet i can produce a steady note.

  • I'm having trouble making the buzzing noise :/ i tried spitting and doing letter M... i have to blow a lot of air in order to make it and its not constant.

  • i don't think that buzzing is the right way to play the trumpet

  • Pretty good introduction to the intstrument. He missed one really important item though. Never move the mouthpeice on the lips ! It must stay perfectly stationary in the same place on the lips all the time. A beginner will benefit enormously from this tip. Plus the one he already mentioned, NO PRESSURE on the lips. Develope the muscles...slowly.

  • Thanks mangus

  • you look a lot like Woody Harrelson

  • Thank you, I've been playing for 2 years, and I need a LOT of help with my embouchure... I have big lips so its hard to play...

  • @atos154 2 years is enough time to establish some really strong trumpet habits, whether good or bad. If you're having embouchure trouble, I really think it's worthwhile to meet with a trumpet teacher who can help identify the good and the bad. Even if it's just a few lessons, they can help get you back on track to successful playing.

  • @eTrumpetLessons Thank you.... I think I might just get one of those bigger mouthpieces because I never have time for more lessons, my friends have been bugging me about my embouchure, and I need to fix it.

  • Your the BEST teacher ever!!!!!!

  • You explained everything so perfectly! now if only i had a trumpet... lol

i am a clarinet player, but i want to learn how to play everything!

    :)

  • wtf with your eyes so big??

  • I don't know much about trumpets, i'm a clarinetist. How is the F. Schmidt H300L trumpet? Is it any good? I'll be using that to begin learning and i'll watch your videos but I want to know if that's a quality instrument. Thanks!

  • @RAHHicecream I'm not familiar with that instrument. I do think that 90% of the time, the answer to "Is my trumpet good enough to start learning?" is "yes." As you get used to your trumpe, listen to other trumpet players, and even have the chance to play some other trumpets, you'll likely discover distinctions that are meaningful to you.

  • I'm younger than 15 and I want to play the trumpet and I have my aunties silver one but I still can't tell if I'm buzzing properly

  • My boyfriend would be laughing if he saw me trying to buzz, after all I play clarinet and he plays trumpet lol

  • @dlab00 no

  • do you have to take apart and reasemble trumpet like flute when your not playing

  • very very nice lesson, tell you really, I can make three tone after seeing this vdo (I have little bid music basic but never on trumphet), Thanks a lot

  • @cash2hand That's a good start. Keep it up!

  • Hey I was playing the trumpet for three years and I never did any of this buzzing. All I did was blow into the trumpet and I played, and I played good. Help?

  • @Lotsofpie2222

Buzzing is essential to trumpet playing. I've been playing for 11 years, Studying for my Undergrad in Music Eduction with an instrumental focus. It's good to start out by buzzing on the lips first for about 5 mins as a standard warm up. Try buzzing whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and if possible 16ths. Also try buzzing in a siren type fashion. Start mid range, slur low, and slur high, if you can buzz on the lips without breaks or fracs then you will be gold

  • @chaosdude14 I understand but I don't think its essential because I DONT buzz and I play fairly well

  • @Lotsofpie2222 If it's working well for you and you're getting great results doing what you're doing, keep at it. My guess is that if you can play the trumpet well, you can probably buzz well too.

  • Great lesson, but i do not share your meaning about the tone of a guitar coming from the guitar. It is mostly about the fingers. The angle of the fingers of the frettin' hand & the pressure applied is important! Then the plectrum angle & or finger usage with the other hand also effects the tone a lot.

Of course an instrument + pedals + amplifier has an influence on the tonal color, but if i give a great guitar to a mediocre player his tone wont sound the same. Piano would be a better reference

  • @sandah88 Your point has been made by others as well, and I should have known I was asking for trouble when I made the reference. It's clear you understand my point about creating a tone on the trumpet, and I'd concede that the piano may illustrate it better but I fear a backlash from piano players! :-)

  • i just started playing the trumpet like 2 or 3 days ago and i still cant get that buzzing sound whith my lips. im trying everything you said like getting those corners tight but still i dont know what im doing wrong.

  • @SlickPopz As always, can't say for sure without seeing you, but keep trying, make sure your lips are plenty wet, at least until you get the buzz going.

  • It kinda hurts with braces :/

  • Update.IM ABOU TO THROW MY @*/%&^$#!?%*@ TRUMPET OUT THE

    WINDOW!

  • @aguyoverthere2 lol! Look out below!

Keep at it, and find a teacher to help you get going. You do know about the video lessons I have for sale, right?

    Good luck!

  • Comment removed

  • When i try i get more of a farting sound :(...help?

  • @aguyoverthere2 Make sure you're using lots of air. Soon the notes will 'center' a bit and be more consistent for you.

  • when I buzz my lips I make a really high pitched sound >>

  • @oOKdLuvsOo Sounds like you may be pressing the lips together to hard. It's a strange concept, but try to keep the corners clenched firmly, but the center aperture of your lips supple and loose just enough to vibrate.

  • HELP! I play trumpet in my school's band but I don't know how an E is supposed to sound when I practice!

  • @rukia997 Like any note, an E must have a solid clear ring. If unsure of the pitch, turn to a piano and play an F since we are tuned a step lower. Remember the open E plays flat. Lip it up by slightly adjusting your embrasure.

  • Try making your lips tighter and blow faster air

  • When i blow air through a trumpet, my throat feels a bit choked. How do i fix it?

  • @tinygirl0821 As an exercise, try - without the trumpet- talking like Elmo from Sesame Street (closed throat). Then try to sing like an opera singer (open throat), even if you're not a singer. Once you can distinguish between that open and closed throat, try applying that open-throat approach on the trumpet. This is much easier said than done. Let me know how it works!

  • I just got a trumpet 3 days ago and tried, my tone isnt consistent, and it sound like a lower one, the C not the higher one, the G. The book i got is saying to play a G but im having a hard time doing it and getting very frustrated. I really considered throwing it out the window. And then on this 3rd day just buzzing was hard, i was buzzing the 2 b4 but the 3rd was terrible. This really sucks. I hope u can help

  • @superninjaswordsmen It's natural that the first tone that you can produce on the trumpet is the C, that lower note you refer to. The very first step is playing a consistent pitch. If you can play a C, great! Play that C, hold it as long as you can, and notice how it feels. From there, experiment with playing one step higher, the D (1st & 3rd valves). Gradually work into other notes. Keep at it & it will come.

  • hahahaha "shaq practices his free throws... scratch that kobe practices his free throws"

  • this guy is trippin balls

  • @legobldr1010 if your just starting don't worry if your tone sounds bad practice and your tone will improve assuming you mean rude as in bad sound.

  • im doing exactly what you said but my trumpet makes a rude noise is there something wrong with my trumpet

  • my lips kinda swelled up a little when i first started playing without any knowing of how to play. what did i do wrong, would you think?

  • i got a trumpet 4 30 bucks today and its brand new!:)

  • i got a trumpet from my school and its the only one they had left its old and smells like gross metal and my teacher gave me a new mouthpiece cuz the one i got was gross i guess i have to deal with it!!!! :(

  • @MissTwilightlover1 Well,if you live in AZ there is a music store called:Milanos music. or Milanos music.com.

you can rent a new, like new,or used trumpet. $20-$30 a month. got mine and it's AWESOME! it has a case too. saves you $500-$1000.

  • Can having braces cause a bad tone?

  • @GenerationBang Playing trumpet with braces can be a drag, but it's not a deal breaker. Many people do it very successfully!

  • @eTrumpetLessons I chose trumpet for music thinking it would be easy. I was wrong. I got the basics down already but if I play for a long time, my lips tend to feel like I just got back from the dentist

  • I need info fast cause I got a test soon!!!!!!!!!

  • HELP ME! I am a school 6th grade band member and I don't know how to play trumpet but it's my instrument! can I have some writen tips?

  • @rukia997 its my instrument too, but if you have more than 1 trumpet in your band your teacher can help all of you at once

  • @globalriskrulez thanks! I'll keep that in mind.

  • Comment removed

  • Cool

  • this works!

  • Hi, do you have any experience with pressure in the throat area? I started playing two years ago but still haven't gotten very far and have been struggling with my lips and my throat. For some reason I build up pressure in my throat when I start to try and push the air out. If you have some tips, that would be great! It's becoming very frustrating and discourageing

  • @liisatje5 Questions unique to one person can be difficult to answer (esp. related to anatomy), but I'll take a stab. If your throat is closing, the fact that you recognize it is a good start. Practice opening the throat using a singing voice, aiming for Pavarotti more than Bugs Bunny. Then try it on the trumpet keeping that same Pavarotti-like open feel.

  • I've been playing for a really long time and oh my god thank you. my tone sucked so much. It didn't get perfect after watching but oh my god your video made a difference. Thank you thank you thank you!!! The basics, thanks for going over them with me. I never learned the right way to play cause in marching band you learn to march not play. Thank you :D

  • @insomniac21fish Marching while playing the trumpet is certainly a skill that takes practice, but hopefully you're not sacrificing your fundamentals at the expense of your role in the marching band. Playing a role in the sound that only a good marching band can produce can be a real treat!

  • Trumpet #1 = $99.99

  • I want to learn how to play a trumpet but I don't know what to buy... I found three nice and unexpensive options on amazon.com (posted on my next comment), which one would you recommend? Another question, do I have to buy a mouth piece in particular? What's the meaning of 3C, 5C and 7C? Thanks in advance!

  • @filmeo Your amazon trumpet links don't work, but I have an idea of what you're looking at. And while I don't know these models, I'd steer you in a different direction. In order, I recommend buying from a local instrument repair shop, local classifieds, ebay. If you have a local music store, you can try their trumpets, or even rent. Name brands for beginner trumpets include, Conn, Bach, Yamaha, Getzen, Olds. Re. mouthpcs, 7C 5C 3C in order from smallest to largest. To start, try the 7C or 5C.

  • @eTrumpetLessons Thank you! I'll do that.

  • cool

  • I use the mouthpiece alone; I take it out and buzz into it. I can tweak my buzz with the mouth piece rather than with just my mouth alone.

  • How do I make my buzz more vibrate and less airy.

  • @ProffessorPwnage Remember firm corners, but don't pinch the aperture (in the center). Lips moist & supple in the center, firmly clenched corners.

  • Great now i got to find the shaq joke

  • i have a trumpet right next to me and im sooooooo ready

  • This is really helpful, I just started in my band at high school when I was suposed to sign up in Middle but forgot...

  • The price of a good trumpet is like 400-1000 and up$ I just went yesterday to a wind instrument store and it was a question that popped up

  • @mosso26 Thanks for contributing here, but do realize that a trumpet suitable for a beginner can be found for $100-$200. I'm talking used, which are the best bargains since trumpets don't wear out from playing.

  • Im a 3 year french horn player, and ive been told that also playing trumpet can kind of mess up horn playing. is that true?

  • My teacher says I have a good tone but need to be louder how can I do that? Also how can I get high notes such as high C,B, and D to come out easier without straining?

  • @Simsgamer26 I suspect the answer to both your questions is the same: air support. As an exercise, take a big breath and play a tone, building in volume to as loud as you can play (while keeping good embouchure form). Then being careful not to press the horn hard into your lips, try the exercise on progressively higher notes. When you hit the fail point, stop for the day and try again tomorrow.

  • (:

  • Stop at 8:11 so funny

  • I just started band in my school and I got to test the instruments to see which one I'm best at and my teacher told me I'm best at the Trumpet and brass instruments. awesome, does anyone kno the price range for a Trumpet though? I haven't bought one yet

  • @SarahhhAngel Check you local repair shops and pawn shops.

  • How do you correctly... place the trumpet on your mouth? The embrochure I believe? Like, how do you have your lips, and is your head up or down, stuff like that because that is where i have problems.

  • lol i played a really loud high note into my neighbor hood like 10 seconds of holding it some yelled "HEY!!! SHUTUP!!!" XD

  • Is it me or does this guy look like he just smoke the biggest crack rock in the world .... no afense

  • I'm in my middle school's band.

  • We tried out for the instruments and i really want the flute the trumpet or the clarenet and we tried out for the trumpet today and some others like the french horn but we will try out for the others tomorrow, i have never been in band before so this is my first time.

  • Do you have to hold the trumpet like that?

  • @JamesisAwesome98 Unless you have a specific physical reason for doing it differently, yes, this is a good way to hold the trumpet.

  • Thank you sooooo much I was a beginner at trumpet and i didn't know how to blow and i watched this and it helped SOOOOOO much!! Thank you!!!

  • i looked like a gorilla when i buzzed

  • Just started band at my school and i am playing trumpet. Today I just got top and bottom braces and i could barely make a noise it hurts so much. I can't make a buzzing noise with my lips. Its frustrating.

  • @mrbandman5 My older brother played trumpet all through school. He got braces in jr. high and he almost quit playing. It's gonna tear the inside of your lips up, but your mouth will toughen up pretty quickly and you'll be just fine. Keep it up.

  • @mrbandman5 Playing the trumpet with braces can be a pain, but it can be a reminder to not press too hard. You can also get a wax product if you find you're getting cut.

  • I can't make the spit sound if my life depended on it... -___-

  • what if you have a trumpet where it dosent have the bottom ring things<like where he put his fingers when he made the gun thing

  • @boxturtlesrock That's not a deal-breaker. :-)

  • Great lesson. Thank You for sharing Your knowledge !

  • Quit talkinq and just teach us!! :\

  • Mad.. i bought a trumpet and i cant buzz my lips?
