for those who think she is flat.. she is dead on in the center of the tone.. sometimes that sounds flat.. because we listen for overtones.. also, she added more middle weight to the voice.. but this is by no means flat.. from a conductor.. the only criticism is she pushes her chest register..
but,,, she never lost her upper register like so many.. she knows what she is doing.. probably the most fantastic artist of our time
If there is any flatness, it is very slight in the final note, but this recording makes even that difficult to hear clearly.
What you say is true. My singing coach used to ask me to sing on the "top" of a tone, not in the middle, because it could sound flat. The human ear can be fooled. I don't think she is actually flat here at all, perhaps a hair, but that doesn't detract from her great artistry.
Something sounds weird about 0:36-0:40. I mean with the the key or something. Regardless I love this woman!! No other words can be said about how great she is even as this much older age.
I first saw her 2 year before this date in Lisboa, where she also sang this aria, and after that I've became an opera fan. She's great and like someone said we believe every word.
Here 1991 Met performance is a favorite of mine, and now this 1996 performance is adde dto the list beside (not above or below). For me, her voice is perfect for this aria. Thank you Onegin65! :)

Very airy tone. And flat through most of her singing. Not very impressive. And that's a complement.

Ye I agree, the last note is very flat. But her artistry and magic is still wonderful even here at 61.
