Its no different than other forms of government. There is a purpose (money and prestige) and rules to help guid the entity towards that purpose. Governments do the same things. Usually a gang's "industry" is the selling of drugs. The only difference is that governments have actual codified laws to govern its "members" and they are GENERALLY more ethical.

Oaxaca Mexico. I had been down there back in the mid 90's beautiful place really. However things have gotten really bad down there. I live in the US on the boarder and the shit that goes on only 10miles away is insane. The cartels "los Zetas" are mean as fuck. they shoot RPG's at the Mexican cops. Just recently a semi truck full of grade A explosives disappeared in route the US. Its a war zone only second to places like Iraq.
