I remember season 4 was when Lost started to get really confusing, like what's with the doctor washing up on the beach before he was killed. Is the island existing in the future at this point in the story?

Maybe he was in the military. There are a lot of people in the military who learn Morse code, and they don't necessarily stay in the military their entire lives.

After being threatened by the Losties more than once, I'd hesitate to bring them bad news, too. One thing I like about Dan is that he seems much more uncomfortable with lying than a lot of other people on this island. We shouldn't forget that the survivors aren't exactly choir boys either when it comes to lying and deceiving.
If Daniel says "Uh... I don't know" one more time, I'm going to go to that island and punch him in the face. I don't care how many people think he's attractive. And he is a quite a fool for liking Charlotte, I mean seriously, she's so cranky!

So where/when did Bernard learn to read morse code? that seems convenient. What happened to him and Rose? They just... disappeared, it seems.
