It's important that animals are respected and understood. Many people in our society today still do not want to believe that many animals have a high level of cognitive capacity. Sadly, these individuals are often people who will view animal intelligence as a threat to humanity's dignity. I don't think that's a good view to have. I'm glad humans have intelligent friends that they can interact with.

Most animals DO have a high level of cognition. Unfortunately, most people don't realize that animals have *differing* levels of cognition than what our human brains are trained to comprehend. They don't communicate in human languages (unless they are specifically learned by the animal), instead using body language or other means of expression.

I don't think he said "Betty IS something." I think he said "Betty something?" I think he was so focused on what he was saying, that he didn't completely hear your question, so he was wondering if you said something about Betty. That's my interpretation.
