  • at 0:40 the mixer seems to wake up.

  • it wasnt an accident, Johnny idolized the stones, especially keith, he had the exact same haircut as johnny (jus longer and bigger), dressed like keith, covered a shit load of stones songs (Dead Flowers, Street Fighting Man, Wild Horses, As Tears Go Bye, to name a few), both loved 60s girl groups (keith loved ronettes, JT loved Shangri Las), played a vox teardrop like Brian Jones, was in the front row at madison square garden to see em in 68 (you can see johnny in the stones movie Gimme Shelter)

  • @emanon313 is there more footage from this show?

  • this melts my brains

  • Johnny is GOD!

  • forget 'punk' this is rock n roll!

  • ここ、英語だらけでわからんなー。ま、ロックンロールって意味だろう?結局は。ロックンロール!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ...the public found 'disgusting' and 'wierd' and 'wrong', the third reason is cuz along with jerry nolan, and richard hell johnny thunders went on to form one of the first punk bands...The Heartbreakers. But no, the dolls were NOT punk, they may have had the mindset but they would never have considered themselves that and neither would their fans... if you really wanna break down the dolls they were a mixture of 60s girl groups (mainly the Shangri-las, and the ronnettes) and early stones

  • @samman188:

The N.Y. Dolls copied the Shangri-las/Ronettes in style ? Hmm, weird fantasy......maybe you should ask David Sylvian, if he is aware of that ! And their riffs also owe a lot to the Stooges, though more the Stooges with dynamics as the early demotape phase of "Kill City", about the Stones i´m not so certain......e.g. the early Yardbirds had a much dirtier riff sound than the Stones......

  • @MrSKINFLICK of course the dolls copied the shangri las and the stones... and of COURSE theyre aware of it, ummmm .... "When I say im in love...." "Great Big Kiss" are takin rite from them, not to mention songs like Theres Gonna Be a Showdown, Bad Detective, and Subway Train could have passed as Ronettes and Shanri tracks themselves, and on being like the stones david and johnny were a cartoon exaggerated nyc version of the glimmer twins down to the last detail

  • @samman188:i"beg for mercy",might have read that in Wiki just before.

But under the hardrock scorn of Johnny Thunder´s guitar, you can hardly recognize such influences again. And that is sometimes the greatness of new musicians: Transformation on another level !

I would only like to know why David and Johnny are to blame that they were accidently looking like Mick Jagger (true) or Keith Richards (not so true), except you believe in consubstantiality of unrelated people after birth !

  • @samman188 Johnny created the dolls in the stones image, and sound, he took those early stones albums and they influenced him to write what became dolls tracks, just cause it doesnt sound as much like the stones than the yardbirds doesnt mean anything, they even would cover the same songs like little queenie or back in the usa

  • the reason the dolls are classified like that (punk) is 3 reasons, one is that virtually every band that fronted the punk revolution idolized the dolls... weather it be REAL punk from NYC (yes, punk started right here in nyc) or guys in England watching em on the old grey whistle test, two is that the undenyable aspect that the dolls gave to punk is the attitude... it was them (along with the stooges and the MC5...but they were really the first band to overanimate themselves into something...

  • @samman188:

The term punk could also be applied to rough and very early sound of the Who, Beatles wtf - but let´s not argue, you´re right that punk as a social + cultural phenomenon of the 70s started in New York, although Lenny Kaye used the term earlier in the liner notes of the 'Nuggets' sampler - for psychedelic R&B garage bands from allover the USA.......

  • @ThePENON don't be racist you scum bag. Just because your life sucks does not mean you have to be like that. I know that comment was five months ago but fuck off.

  • This is the way The Dolls would be as part of the heritage of the MC5. It's the soul of the MC5 and the wAY JOHNNY WOULD FOLLOW WHERE THE FIVE left.

  • Thunders is kicking ass

  • fuck "punk"; long live rock n' roll!

  • all shtui the fuck up this aitn no fucking punk

  • Johnny Thunders is almost punk, are you kidding? Punk is almost Johnny Thunders!

  • At about 1:29 into the video, look at JT's legs and the way he moves them. Axl clearly stole this from him.

20 years ago today. RIP Johnny.

  • @lRootslRocklRebel Axl Rose that is, the cuntface.

  • @lRootslRocklRebel actually Johnny took that move from Elvis...

  • Johnny was the first tear-it-up style guitar player in existence. he tried to copy Keith Richards but came out with something totally new.

  • @up2space Whatta Fuck!!! Nigger Shit?

  • @up2space

Thunders would have died anyways, you racist piece of shit! Yeah, he was badass when he had it together, but he was a career junkie & it's almost unthinkable that he would still be alive today.

  • johnny rules!

  • Remarkable performance from Thunders. Top of his game right there.

  • Jiss macob

  • Johnny Thunders + Les paul Junior = GENIUS

  • late night TV in the 70's and the NY Dolls pop up ----YEAH

the first time tons of people had ever seen them (me included)

I was hooked---Thunders is one of my guitar gods because he was so sloppy but hit the mark most of the time

too bad too many dead people are on the tape

RIP all those that gave their all in the name of R & R

  • This is one of the most brilliant performances in the history of music.

  • R.I.P. Billy, Johnny, Jerry, and Arthur.

  • Dogger, no. Jesus is God. Quit making yourself sound stupid by calling people God. You belittle yourself. Ga head an do it again by retaliating to my comment.

  • anyone know the chord progression for this song?

  • @shooz4u it's G A E

  • yeah i meant Bolan

  • great

  • I'd have to agree punk was not a term used back then, and iggy pop was way before the doll's .We just called it hard Rock. The Term Glam Rockers was being used around 74 or 75.Punk wasn't a term used in the States until about 77 or 78.But even New wave was the term before used for punk.I know Bomp records and magazine was around in 77.But a couple 45's one being Sex Pistols the other was no less Iggy Pop / Kill City on Green Vinyl.LOL

  • Notice some debate about punk vs. rock w/these guys.

Back around 73/74, when we'd see the New York Dolls in concert, the word punk wasn't commonly used for music.

They were more often called hard rock, and some magazines ridiculously called them glam.

The NYDolls rocked. They'd come on stage so loud that we had to hold our hands over our ears. And blow us away w/Trash, Personality Crisis, Chatterbox etc.

Johnny Thunders was outrageous to see on stage!

As they all were. Yeah - the Dolls.

  • This is the way people should remember Johnny, as the talented, charismatic and pioneering guitar player. This performance captures the essence of rock and roll so perfectly and it is rock and roll, not punk or anything else you want to label it.

Johnny was the king of New York 70's rock and roll. Sleep baby doll.

  • outstanding bass and drums

  • This is such a kick-butt performance. Thunders is at the top of the list of those who make the coolest rock n roll star stage moves.

  • Wow! Watchng Johnny Thunders, you can really see where Paul Stanley took his stage moves from!!

  • a lot of people took Johnny's moves. Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols said that he is embarrassed when he watches old film of himself on stage because he copied Johnny so much.

  • You're not kidding!!!

  • I love me some Kiss but they're the biggest rip off band there is. They luckily rip off the bands I like. Paul Stanley always reminded me of Marc Roland,T-Rex

  • @TheSonicmule don't you mean Bolan

  • It's my understanding that Johnny Thunders didn't care much for Punk rock and despised it when people called his music Punk. He considered himself Rock & Roll. Not trying to start a controversy- it's just something I've read a few times from different people that knew him.

  • aint seen that one before. wow im all blowed back right now. best guitarist rock, best rock hair, best durn rocker ever. Lived and died R&R RIP Johnny. you are missed.

  • i love the way thunders shot his arm out when he really ripped a chord

  • how many bpm is this song?

  • the other guitarist besides thunders thats the guitar malcolm mcclaren gave to steve jones oh what was his name some one sylvain i think was his name

  • yeah i said that in like a million vids then idiots disagree haha, sylvain sylvain gave the guitar to malcom for money for a bus ticket home and he never got the money! haha then gave it to jones because he was a major nyd fan....if only that guitar could talk!! the original is in california a old lady has it jones said after the pistols split malcom sold all the gear..jones also used a burny 70s copy thats in the gstq video not a gibson

  • The essence of rock and roll. Perfect!

  • The Dolls were all heart! You don't see that kind of dedication and enthusiasm in music anymore. It's too bad only 2 of the original Dolls are still alive. Thanks for posting

  • Thunders sure had charisma.

  • He's one of the least talked about guitarists, he deserves more recongnition.

  • Johnny sure looked great back then.

  • I guess i got a little carried away in the excitement of seeing this particular video when I said that. The hippy era spawned many great bands as well like Moby Grape(If Skip Spence wasn't a punk, than who really was?), The Stooges, Flamin' Groovies, Chocolate Watchband. They all did psychedelics & found time to make some great music. I'm just still bitter after all these years that Amerika never accepted The Dolls.

  • I think Sylvian is playing the Les Paul that ended up in the hands of Steve Jones.

  • It doesn't get any better than that for the 70's! I can't believe how well-rehearsed &TIGHT they were for that gig. They wanted it sooooo bad. THAT was fuckin' PUNK with a capital "K"... you buncha fuckin' hippies!

  • Whatever it's called, this is rock and roll pushed to 11.

  • THUNDERS = THE BEST.

  • One of the best Punk solos ever!

  • Thunders did it first and no one's done it better since.

  • Give me link to the Rough Stuff im lookin for it for 6 months :/ or if anyone got CD and can upload a song, i would be very pleased. Gimme check on priv massage.

  • Everybody owes everything to these fuckin' guys. Club 82 Lives!

    I love YOUTube.

  • aaaahhhhhhh now i feel so much fucking better.

  • Johnny Fucking Thunders,Syl Sylvain..fucking great guitarist

  • LOOK at Johnny. The TRUE godfather of punk!

  • JOHNNY YOU ARE THE BEST! RIP.....

  • @michellestmarie its not punk....rock n roll he also said it, he dont play punk, he plays rock n roll

  • that is correct thank you for pointing it out ,)

  • @77pox:

"Punk" or "rock´n´roll" are just terms anyway, enjoy the energy here, plz !

  • The originals, the best. All immitators "the lowest common demoninators of Rock".What entertainment! what an an EVENT! what a Crying fucking Shame. The Best.Sadly, Badly missed. Bless. (X)

  • incredible!!!

  • Johnny Thunders is God

  • The fantastic Johnny Thunders!
