  • There is something endearing about this, the narration is so dated even by 1977 standards that he could be talking about the Beatles emergence in the early sixties if you just changed the script a bit.

  • I love that shit, it sounds like those didactic behavorial films they used to show us in primary school here in the states! My band has a video, "Irene," made from a self-esteem film from the 1970s about not following "norms," respliced to show a love triangle, a good re-purposing of those childhood propaganda, control films.

  • I love Rat's sarcastic comment.

  • Amazing, never seen this. Thanks for posting!!

  • Tom Snyder was cool. look how he interviewed the Clash.

    We all chase the gold

Who wants to be poor and have to work all hours for shit money?

Just got to control the greedy bas-turds like the Wankers-Bankers etc etc

Need some new punk spirit from the young folk before they get corrupted by the BLING.. No what i mean??

Like Joe Strummer says we can change anything

  • Dig it!

  • The narrator!

how to make sire that all the assholes enjoying booting someone in the face will go to punk gigs and get the clothes and turn a creative nihilistic explosion into a boozed-up bully's paradise.....

then the rest of the tirade: nihilism("anti-everything!") and cashing in somehow shouldn't be compatible...how bizarre!

Take any multinational corporation: makes money and is against everybody else but itself. So it is just normal robber-baron piracy liberalism. Shit! I rant ! sorry...

  • Society mustn't B changed...it must B destroyed...

  • heh, narrator is an ass

  • BAHAHA! They call Dave Vanian Dracula. Really great video!!

  • Would you happen to know the video I'm thinking of... Some guy introduces them on a TV program and I don't know who shouts it, but one of the members says his name is "Idiot Asshole".

  • @MordaciousFilms v=8m2JyiggwAU

  • Great video. It's a learning experience.

The narrator must be that jerk Tom Snyder. It makes me laugh because he's so monotone and tries to make it sound factual. It reminds me of Bill O'Really? @ Faux News Corp. The newsmedia hasn't changed, it's still full of BS. You gotta see Tom Snyder interview PIL here at Youtube.

  • @sandieguitoadult I'm glad you liked it. He does sound like Bill O' Reilly! :)) The idiot narrator is Lloyd Dobyns and it's from punk special called New Elizabethans, featured on a NBC show called Weekend in 1977. Some Sex Pistols footage from the same report is also posted on youtube. I saw some of Tom Snyder's PIL interview,he doesn't have a clue what to ask them! :)

I hope i will find the full show to upload.

  • @cpunctn Actually Tom Snyder was one of the only talk show hosts to feature punk artists. Included were everyone from the Clash to Patti Smith to The Plasmatics and even the Ramones. (Although Tom was on vacation and had a guest host but Joey Ramone kept asking "Where's Tom?") So in that respect he was not really a jerk but rather gave exposure to a genre of music that most at that time shunned. He should have been thanked.

  • "its amazing to actualling see The Damned FEATURING on a documentary about punk rock, because they usually are excluded from the documentaries, infact i have met a shitload of "punks" who dont even know them." - No surprise there. Most of the bozos running around calling themselves "punks" over the last 20 years don't know their own asses from a hole in the ground.

  • Hiwatt amps and Gibson guitars aren't expensive?

  • this narrator was an ignorant moron even for the day - great footage of the band though; i never saw this on the news on my hometown!

  • Wow, really cool upload. I had to laugh at the stupid line the narrator says "lead singer Dracula."

  • Brilliant footage cpunctn, commentary clearly by a fool. Lead singer "Dracula"? Get real, Dave Vanian was my hero as a kid, picked by the rest because he "looked like a singer". Brian James was the real talent, band went downhill when they got rid. Still enjoying Damned Damned Damned and Music for Pleasure to this day. Check out "Born to Kill", a classic.

  • You have to know that New York was a really tough place back then. People didn't look at other peoples faces. You were very careful not to bump into someone. We were in a dangerous time. Now, most people in NYC are from somewhere else, and have no idea what it was. Punk was tough, but all freaks were welcome. It was good to be a freak back then, in that scene.

  • Hahahaha

    "Lead singer Dracula"

I really don't know if he was kidding or if he was serious

Anyway, the media doesn't know shit

  • Cracks me up that '77 punk used to scare people.A few years later hardcore made it seem almost quaint.Nowadays gangster rap et al makes it all seem like a quilting bee.

  • lol i know right when hardcore punk came out people were getting beat up at shows and riots would break out lol

  • I think it is NBC, from early 1977? The Pistols one is from the Today show, and talks about their tour in the US. Whenever anyone talked to me about watching an NBC expose on punk in 1977, they always mention there was a lot on the Damned.

  • Thank you for posting this. I don't think it is the NBC news show, the main thing I remember from that show was the Pistols shown recording "God Save the Queen" in the studio. The narrator's attitude is typical of a "sophisticated" American take on British (or American) punk of the time. There is an intellectual attempt to understand it, but a "generation gap" shall we say, between the wannabe Walter Cronkite and the punk generation. Is it not still the same today?

  • the media - cynical about punk from the word go..perhaps they were just scared lol

    brill footage thanks :)

  • Pretty certain this is from Lloyd Dobyn's 'Weekend" late night news magazine that aired late night on NBC. It was the first mention of Punk on corporate media, caught it then....

  • The Damned never stopped being what they were as far as I know. Great dedication.

  • "Lead Singer Dracula".

That's gonna be the name of my new band.

Did he actually think Vanian's name was Dracula or was he just being a prick?

  • The first live footage must be recorded at The Roxy early 77!? Same gig as the pic on the back cover of 1st album was shot, look at Captains nurse suit.

  • amazing footage.....never seen this before!! and the clueless narrator is priceless.....'lead singer Dracula' says it all! lol but was he clueless?whoever wrote the script for him wasn't! sadly it was this kind of manipulative journalism that destroyed punk....always promoting the negative aspects of it!

  • great footage, idiot narrator

  • This narrator is a wanker!

Green Day still sucks and can tea bag me!

  • Green Day was a good introduction to punk rock for five year olds. Unfortunately, for everyone else they're putzes.

  • Yeah, maybe, but even as an introduction to "punk rock" early Green Day sounds like the Knack.

  • this was great pretty awesome

    sweet video

    =p

  • The speaker is a dildo and doesn't know what he is talking about. On the other hand, if he was speaking of green day and other bands of that pathetic nature, he would have hit the nail on the head!

  • I believe this is from an NBC newsmagazine show called "Weekend," which used to fill in for SNL once a month during SNL's early days.

  • Thank you very much for the info! :) Unfortunately, this is all i could manage to find from it.If someone has more footage or the whole show, please upload.Or leave a message to let me know where i can find it.

    Thanks in advance!

  • lead singer: Dracula! lol

  • Nick Lowe on the knobs !!

  • Thank you very much for uploading this. its amazing to actualling see The Damned FEATURING on a documentary about punk rock, because they usually are excluded from the documentaries, infact i have met a shitload of "punks" who dont even know them. For me they are always gonna be the best band to emerge from that generation.

  • dude they are the best band who emerged from punk rock, they have so much to offer too bad they aren't recognized as well as they should have been all these years!!!

  • Fucking media liars...fuck em! We were all so violent and hated everybody...

  • This is awesome! Thanks so much for putting it up. If you do get more, I'd love to see it.

  • neat neat neat
