as one who works on a farm in san diego, i can definitely confirm that your fact is not true.

while it is the case that most palm trees are not native to california, there is a native palm known as a california palm [washingtonia filifera] which is found naturally all over socal. it's really ugly.

so there you have it. most of the ones you see lining the streets are obviously planted [and most of them are washingtonia robusta, the mexican fan palm] but it's landscaping, what do you want? ;-P
