Ferrets are illegal in NYC (not the whole state, just the city), in all of Cali, and in Hawaii.
There may be a few more cities or districts that require license ownership so please do check your laws before you get a ferret. Just because they sell them in the pet store, does not make them legal.

If people are afraid of ferrets getting loose and breeding in the wild they should require all ferrets being sold to be fixed, and have special permits to breed them. Ferrets are not allowed by state law in California too.
Hawaii also has a ban on ferret, cause they will supposedly spread rabies...yet all ferret rabies related cases in teh US have been linked to vaccine testing. Go figure. Law makers should get ACCURATE data before banning animals. Dogs are a greater threat than a 2 lb ferret.

i live in new york i had 2 pet ferrets and one day i woke up to a cops flash light in my eye and they just took them and told me that i wa giving them adatud by crying. Its redickuless! And as a side note, I haven't been a ferret parent for very long, but I have done a lot of research, and David (the gentleman on the talk show that received Guiliani's wrath) has been most helpful with everything, and has spent quite a bit of time on the phone with me so I could benefit from his years of experience.
I would tell everyone who wants a ferret as a pet, read, research, and read some more, speak to a vet with experience, speak to people that have ferrets, they make excellent pets!
They make great pets, and the biggest danger is posed by owners who don't know how to care for ferrets. The only creature in danger are the poor unfortunate ferrets. If descented, they barely smell, and most are fixed and descented. They only way to get an intact ferret is to go to a breeder, and 99% of breeders will only sell intact ferrets to other breeders. There goes the theory that there will be a population explosion if they escape. As far as bites, cat bites are MUCH worse.
... Ferrets, on the other hand, are almost completely dependant on their caregivers for everything. That being said, there is a huge difference between a ferret, a stoat, a polecat and a black footed ferret. The three latter species are wild, and cannot be kept as pets.
Also, ferrets were COMPLETELY banned by RG in the late 90's. Up until that point, you could have a ferret with a permit. There were no grandfather clauses that allowed you to keep a ferret after the ban.
There is a lot of misinformation posted here. Let me correct some of that. Dogs were most likely domesticated somewhere around 15,000 years ago. Cats were domesticated during the Egyptian dynasties. Ferrets, somewhat less. Probably around 2,000 to 2,500 years ago. Dogs, while completely domesticated, can survive in the wild because they are scavengers that can eat just about anything. Cats, for the most part, can survive in the wild, though have considerably shorter lives than housecats...
mankind domesticated the dog, then the ferret, then the rabbit then the cat. IN THAT ORDER. it's not hard to do a little research and see that a ferret cannot survive more then 4 days on average with out a human to take care of it. Today's ferret is more domesticated then any cat or dog will be. They can at least still survive if you dump them on their butts.

Well, the point is that they're not NATIVE animals, and that they're also very hearty. If enough escaped to start breeding, a massive problem could happen. The entire state of California hasn't allowed ferrets for some time now, due to concerns for the native wildlife, which already has enough to compete with as is. A dog wouldn't massecre the native birds and reptiles, thats why dogs don't really matter.

Oh yeah, also ferrets ARE still wild animals. They're not domesticated like dogs. That they make good pets because they're social doesn't change their wild nature.
On the off chance you're not being sarcastic, you should know that ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years. Not just kept as pets... but domesticated. They rely on human care more than dogs and cats do. The chances of a domestic ferret surviving on its own (especially in NYC) for more than a couple days is pretty much astronomical. Add that to the fact that ferrets sold in pet stores are already neutered and the chances of them running rampant in the city are basically nil.

That they are social and easily adapt to human homes does not mean they are domesticated. Cats are BARELY domesticated, for example, and we've had them much longer than ferrets.
I suggest you realize the rest of the US isn't NYC. Indiana, Ohio, many places NEVER neuter small animals like ferrets. California illegalized them because they would be able to survive in our climate, and if they did manage to breed, they could decimate native birds/small animals.

California had them illegalized for political reasons not environmental ones. However, do look up the term "domesticated." You apparently don't know what it means if you think your lovely little weasle is at all domesticated. He may well be tame and well socialized, but thats entirely different from domestication. Leash skills have little to do with it.
With the logic they present, yes, they should also ban cats. However, we both know this wouldn't happen, because cats are not "exotic" pets, which are far more easy to regulate than 'normal' pet animals.
However, chinchilla's are a might bit more fragile than ferrets. They have less of a chance of populating in the California environment than ferrets would have. Also, regardless of my name, they're really not all that deadly. But that would just be you not getting the joke.

i live in new york i had 2 pet ferrets and one day i woke up to a cops flash light in my eye and they just took them and told me that i wa giving them adatud by crying. Its redickuless! And as a side note, I haven't been a ferret parent for very long, but I have done a lot of research, and David (the gentleman on the talk show that received Guiliani's wrath) has been most helpful with everything, and has spent quite a bit of time on the phone with me so I could benefit from his years of experience.
I would tell everyone who wants a ferret as a pet, read, research, and read some more, speak to a vet with experience, speak to people that have ferrets, they make excellent pets!

They make great pets, and the biggest danger is posed by owners who don't know how to care for ferrets. The only creature in danger are the poor unfortunate ferrets. If descented, they barely smell, and most are fixed and descented. They only way to get an intact ferret is to go to a breeder, and 99% of breeders will only sell intact ferrets to other breeders. There goes the theory that there will be a population explosion if they escape. As far as bites, cat bites are MUCH worse.

... Ferrets, on the other hand, are almost completely dependant on their caregivers for everything. That being said, there is a huge difference between a ferret, a stoat, a polecat and a black footed ferret. The three latter species are wild, and cannot be kept as pets.
Also, ferrets were COMPLETELY banned by RG in the late 90's. Up until that point, you could have a ferret with a permit. There were no grandfather clauses that allowed you to keep a ferret after the ban.

There is a lot of misinformation posted here. Let me correct some of that. Dogs were most likely domesticated somewhere around 15,000 years ago. Cats were domesticated during the Egyptian dynasties. Ferrets, somewhat less. Probably around 2,000 to 2,500 years ago. Dogs, while completely domesticated, can survive in the wild because they are scavengers that can eat just about anything. Cats, for the most part, can survive in the wild, though have considerably shorter lives than housecats...

mankind domesticated the dog, then the ferret, then the rabbit then the cat. IN THAT ORDER. it's not hard to do a little research and see that a ferret cannot survive more then 4 days on average with out a human to take care of it. Today's ferret is more domesticated then any cat or dog will be. They can at least still survive if you dump them on their butts.

i agree with the first part about domestication. on the other hand, ferrets are very intelligent and agile creatures. so they can easily survive w/o humans - e.g. feeding on rats, mice, etc. banning ferrets from a city is just stupid, ofc. problem is only some 10% of ferret owners know how to properly keep a ferret.

No, your average domesticated ferret CANNOT survive in the wild, most ferrets never get a chance to practice their hunting skills as kits, and might not even recognize a rodent as food if it sat down in front of them.

Ah, yes, it's mostly the breeding and raising of American ferrets that makes them bad hunters, in countries where they're still bred for rabbit hunting, they'd be better off. Of course, all ferrets tend to bite until they're trained not to.

Horses are not exotic, only some birds are exotic, raccoons and foxes (and skunks) are esoteric (still not exotic), and big cats are usually exotic.
And the exotic ones are highly regulated, and usually require permitting and, for big cats, insurance.
And yes, making a pithy assumption on my personal response to a roaming raccoon has sooooo much to do with the topic.
By your logic, an insect farm is exotic. I'm afraid thats not quite how things work.

Well, the point is that they're not NATIVE animals, and that they're also very hearty. If enough escaped to start breeding, a massive problem could happen. The entire state of California hasn't allowed ferrets for some time now, due to concerns for the native wildlife, which already has enough to compete with as is. A dog wouldn't massecre the native birds and reptiles, thats why dogs don't really matter.

On the off chance you're not being sarcastic, you should know that ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years. Not just kept as pets... but domesticated. They rely on human care more than dogs and cats do. The chances of a domestic ferret surviving on its own (especially in NYC) for more than a couple days is pretty much astronomical. Add that to the fact that ferrets sold in pet stores are already neutered and the chances of them running rampant in the city are basically nil.

That they are social and easily adapt to human homes does not mean they are domesticated. Cats are BARELY domesticated, for example, and we've had them much longer than ferrets.
I suggest you realize the rest of the US isn't NYC. Indiana, Ohio, many places NEVER neuter small animals like ferrets. California illegalized them because they would be able to survive in our climate, and if they did manage to breed, they could decimate native birds/small animals.
Diff place, diff solution.

that is a load of horse shit. Ohio law demands that all ferrets sold in shops are neutered female ferrets have to be or else the chance of them dieing is really high. California had them illegalized for political reasons not environmental ones. They claim its for environmental reasons but if it were true then the surrounding states that do allow ferrets would have devastated that geographical area already. Ferrets are more domesticated then cats I take mine to the park no leash

With the logic they present, yes, they should also ban cats. However, we both know this wouldn't happen, because cats are not "exotic" pets, which are far more easy to regulate than 'normal' pet animals.
However, chinchilla's are a might bit more fragile than ferrets. They have less of a chance of populating in the California environment than ferrets would have. Also, regardless of my name, they're really not all that deadly. But that would just be you not getting the joke.

If you've ever owned a ferret, you learn quickly that they are completely dependent on humans, and could never survive even in your own front yard. I've owned ferrets, and I've no doubt they would have done just fine without my help, should they have escaped. They are not dependent, we just force them into dependence. Not a bad thing as pets, but this still doesn't make them "domesticated." TAME, perhaps, but not domesticated.
Give me some of those "legions" of sources.
I don't see why you would think my mindset somehow "injures" ferrets. I simply understand the reasoning behind the ban, or why certain places might want to ban.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, or anything uncalled for. It's just that when I see that someone has developed this mentality of ferrets, I feel the need to correct them so as to prevent any potential harm caused to a ferret via this kind of thinking. There's been people that believe that ferrets can survive in the wild, and desire to raise them so that they can "return them to their natural home". This is always deadly for ferrets, and if they're lucky they might survive only a week at the most.
