  • She wa sotalented and so sick....so skinny . Love the hairdo

  • her voice is so effortless, a God given voice. no wonder he wanted her up there to sing to the angels.

  • This song sad ㅠㅠ

  • Luv her voice n music!!

  • I called you baby, but you never told me you loved me.

  • her voice was fantastic , reminds me of when i was a kid

  • what is sad to me is that when anyone says Karen's name, the natural thing some people say is "hey didn't she die of anorexia?" I like to remember Karen for her voice and undeniable talent. You will always be missed Karen

  • I'm only 23 and I play their CD in my car and I study to the Carpenters. Her voice and their music is so pure. When I was little, my mom would sing me their songs and it's how I feel asleep. We need more talent like this today. You are missed by many Karen. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world.

  • This is so amazing. 20 years before i was born, this rocks!

  • sadly missed, a sure waste of a good talent and superstar

  • WHAT KILLS ME THE MOST IS THAT SHE DIED SO YOUNG..AT A YOUNG AGE OF 33

  • the best voice ever!

  • poor thing....you can see her dead eyes...her story is heartbreaking. We live in a vain world , its brutal. Not many people love themselves.....

  • @JohnBrownsArmy She sang with deep feeling and brought it to the music. She was really great a doing it. Not many pop singers can do that today. I was a Carpenter fan as a kid.

  • she was vocally flawless, perfect timing always.

  • @maliwahtallhei I am sure she would if she wasn't dead.

  • @maliwahtallhei --you're a jerk... she is perfect just the way she is....

  • Such beauty, such grace, such fraglility.. Miss you Karen!

  • I remember a couple of years after Karen Carpenter died, I had been looking for books, album sets or anything I could find on The Carpenters. With no luck, I wrote her memorial foundation in California. Not thinking much would come of it, I sent it off. In about a month's time, I received this package (Hand written) from her mom ( who was head of her memorial foundation at that time). It had a color ten year photo album, autographed photos of The Carpenters, studio interviews of the two of

  • I was only 14 - but fell in love with Karen and her voice!

  • Song was written about Eric Clapton

  • Tommy Boy....

    That is all. ;)

  • My first drum teacher behind Karen Carpenter---when he got this gig,he have me HIS gig playing 6 nights a week------Thanx Jimmy.

  • I can't hear this song without picturing Tommy Boy and Richard singing along ^_^

  • uncomparable voice !!!. God bless u Karen wherever u are

  • The voice of an angel, and a hurt heart.

Pitch perfect is rare. But Karen could do it.

  • @Unstupid1 You put the words in my mouth, thank you.

  • Laura Elizabeth Murphy, i missed you so damn much. without you everything is nothing...

  • Chuck Norris and Karen's exquisite voice do not belong in the same clip!! EVER!!!

  • Carol Decker of T'PAU, doing Superstar Got me here.

  • What a beautiful song...

  • @allidock11 It is beautiful, but unfortunatly people only know Luther's version.

  • She sings so clean, she's always humble, and I want to cry ever time I listen to her music. I miss her so much b/c music today is just...not like this anymore. RIP Karen.

  • One of the greatest voices in pop music. Karen's voice was heaven-sent. It was pure and distinct. She had perfect pitch.

  • Baby, baby. Oh baby.

  • Lets hear todays 'artists' sing their songs live with vocals fully exposed - good luck. Not many can do it. Karen is the Superstar.

  • This song was 40 years ago no.6 in the world charts #carpenters

  • Wow and I thought she was beautiful in the "I know I need to be in love" video...whats makes her more attractive is the obvious musical talent and voice of an angel she has. And this is coming from a guy who doesnt usually express himself like this as much.

  • Without adoubt, one of the greatest female vocalists of all.....perfect pitch, clarity and timing, all before there was such a thing as autotune. Ladies and gentlemen, this is REAL, pure vocal talent. RIP Ms. Carpenter, you are truly missed.

  • @mjfrancis516

I think she's the best female pop vocalist I've ever heard. I love a lot of singers like Annie Lennox, Stevie Nicks just to name a few but Karen will always be the standout imo

  • Miss her and Dusty S. And now we have dancing screamers for this generation. Glad we can hear them here.

  • que hermosa voz canta como nadie

  • Holy eyebrows, Batman.

  • I noticed she's wearing the same outfit from another clip at the '71 Grammy's. She was beautiful and sexy as hell before the mid 70's when her disease started to take it's toll on her physically :(

  • fab

  • This such a beautiful version of this song..I love this broadcast..Thank you!

  • The Carpenters were not Mormons, but Karen briefly dated Allan Osmond, who is Mormon. But there is no more evocative female voice in the last 50 years.

  • this song is on my favorites list. i wasn't criticizing her for being mormon. but having brought up in the midst of mormons, they seem to have an uncanny way of hiding pain. she had such a beautiful voice to the end. rip

  • 4 dunces can't hear a superstar! Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  • This song was 40 years ago no.2 in the world charts #carpenters

  • The voice!

  • 4 people didn't get shit before the second show.

  • @YoungGun66

    LOL! Funny post

  • No one! what a loss.

  • Love it. I remember when it came out back then and my cousin had the record. I played the hell out of it; I'm surprised that the needle and record didn't wear out. R.I.P Karen. We'll never forget you.

  • Karen looks so demure but sexy when the music starts . Her little bobbing and the slow turn towards the camera are just epic. She was so very beautiful I think about her at times. Her vouce was given to her by an angel when she was a little baby.

  • Karen its for me the more great singer of U.S.A...un grand charisme ...un grand charme ...

  • love carpentersx

  • Just the most amazing voice,as a kid i used to laugh with my sister at our auntie gloria's record collection !, over thirty years later i watch these songs on youtube and relax, great music that never ages, see you in another 30 years.............wonderful.

  • still best voice of all time even in 2011

  • Such innocence

  • A Song for a Broken Heart...I'm a Astronaut without a Planet to visit.

  • A voice that can bring a 250 pound, tattooed biker to tears

  • @krwescott I've made them piss their pants before. But it just worked on a tatoo covered 6'4, 277lb combat tested former Marine DI & 18 year NYC Cop. Did I just embarrass myself? Oh well.......... ;-)

  • @krwescott Yea...it's a beautiful song and she had such a beautiful voice....I ain't no 250 lb biker but it is definitely a song that can bring tears to your eyes!

  • @krwescott come on, at least 3 bills

  • This song was 40 years ago no.6 in the world charts #carpenters

  • I remember the day that she died!! My mom and dad were in a store and I was waiting for them in the car. My dad had left me with the radio playing and I was changing stations trying to find something on to listen to and all of the sudden one of the disjockeys said that Karen Carpenter had died of Anarexia and then they played this song and I really didn't like the Carpenters at the time, but I started to like them then and I don't know why I never did like them, they are GREAT!! RIP, KAREN!!

  • @starladodge4

Nice story. Thanks for sharing. I think it's only as one gets older and looks back we realise just how talented these two siblings were. :))

  • @starladodge4 Odd coincidence. I was in a car with my parents on the way to some ski resort up north when it came over the radio. Then as now they were my favourites and I was devastated.

  • whats amazing is you sense Karen's actually holding back, that there's even more depth and emotion in that voice, that she's carefully conrolling how much she'll deliver. That shows discipline and understanding, she never felt compelled to show off or showcase her voice, it was a musical instrument just like the woodwinds.

  • @melissacarterTS

Well said. That's what makes hear so unique imo unlike Mariah, Whitney or Celine just to name a few who scream at top of there lungs Karen could hit those lower notes perfectly with barely a whisper and convey so much more emotion and feeling than singing really loudly. I miss her a lot!! :(

  • i just picture david spade and chris farley singing this song from tommy boy.

  • @SucramNumber2 Me, too!!

  • she had a pure alto voice..velvetty smooth and clear...kept an even beautiful pitch..one of my favorites of many from her

  • The Carpenters were one of my first favorite bands. I remember being 10 or so and buying their cd in the 90's and rockin out to this song on my portable cd player! Good memories!

  • one of the best voices ever-beautiful song it will always be one of my all time favs

  • The greatest female vocalist of my generation! There are others but none can match her emotion in each of her songs! She sang with such ease & fluidity w/o trying to be over-the-top. So sad she left us in such a tragic way.

  • BUT spic n howie

    I HAVE THIS MAD IDEA

RELEASE ACAPELLA VERSIONS OF HER BEST VOCALS

    IE LIKE THIS ONE

  • Nowadays you have to do black southern karaoke renditions- check C Aguliera or Adele to see what I mean- to get on the radio.

  • best ever

  • Her voice is so full without, as lots of others have said too, the need of big gymnastics or singing as loud as you possibly can. I think we have lost the meaning of a true songstress at the moment. Karen Carpenter's vocal is hypnotic and deeply silky and full and wonderful.

  • do i LOVE this song havent heard it in years!

  • And to think that in today's music industry Karen Carpenter would be completely ignored and dismissed for not being "sexy" or not doing vocal gymnastics....so sad...

  • @giglio33012

Not that with that voice! People would be in awe of her talent in any era!

  • Unlike many artists she sounded as good live as on the recordings.

  • Très résèrvé en 71... ..timide ..

  • @MrLinoventura She was very self conscious in 71, which is lead to her demise.....Tres triste

  • @Silverpearl00 .....merci de votre réponse..I like very match the Carpenters ... Karen its for me the more great singer of U.S.A...un grand charisme ...un grand charme ...

  • Simply bliss!!!! No one can touch this song like she can!

  • I think she's singing about Mick Jagger.

  • Comment removed

  • What a terrible tragedy. She had the voice of an angel.

  • The Definition of Perfection!!

  • Who would have the guts to cover this song today? NOBODY.

  • greatest female voice i ever heard

  • she is so beautiful......so sad

  • KAREN CARPENTER!

    Wow! A Beautiful Angelic Voice!

Decades later, after this performance it still is a remarkable one! Karen's voice was a thing of great beauty! Truly lovely! The World misses Karen and I do! God bless her!

  • awesome simple as that

  • She was the best,,,,I doubt anyone will ever have that voice

  • @dmaup2010

She was and nobody does or will...ever :)))

  • what a voice - since they weren't "heavy" they weren't (ok, SHE wasn't) as appreciated as she should have been ...

  • The two greatest female voices of all time Karen Carpenter and Patsy Cline, unfortunately neither are still with us which is so sad.

  • karen is unique in that she always sounds better than one remembers - easily the most talented musician since Mozart, and yes, all of us who grew up with her miss her terribly ...

  • awesome voice ,,,,,,,,,,timeless, was taken from us to young xx

  • @lustylaura1

    Amen to that!!

  • Amazing voice and beautiful lyrics. You don't get any better than that.

  • 40 years later and she still sounds better thany any sh!t on the radio today! This clip should have at least 341 million hits by now! LOL Karen you were the greatest female vocalist of your generation. Your fans will NEVER froget you...ever!!!

  • @Purple1984Rain wasnt close to been born in 71 (1980) but completely agree no one today can come close to this good.

  • No Body had a better voice, the closest in my book would Marylin McCoo of the 5th demention....Beyoncee my ass..

  • @ilovecpp2013

That's so true. Marilyn had a very similar style to Karen's voice

  • Karen kicks world ass =)

  • fantastic live version...thx!

  • So incredibly beautiful. Karen's voice was so natural, crisp, sweet, and beautiful! A voice that can never be replaced

  • Karen's voice is perfection.

  • I'm glad I got to see them...It must've been the last year or so of her Life...Late 70s? I was living in South Lake Tahoe, and I think it was at Harrah's. I think her cover of Leon Russell's "A Song For You" is my favorite......

  • @195511SM

What was she like live? As good as this clip??

I would have been bawling like a baby!! LOL

  • @Purple1984Rain She & Richard w/full orchestra looked & sounded GREAT. I think they played most of their hits in their entirety, but there may have been a medley of some.......sandwiched between the beginning & ending of "Sing A Song". Back then, the price of admission was you had to pay for a couple of drinks...or pay for a "dinner" show. The casinos liked to hold the shows to 60-90 minutes...to get people back out on the gaming floor ASAP. Wish I could remember more, but it was long ago.

  • @195511SM

    Thanks for posting

  • heaven just recovered an ANGEL,thanks for walking planet earth....

  • I wish singers today would be this true. Her voice doesn't need all the mechanical technical help. She sings so beautiful and pure.

  • Personally I like this version of Superstar the best, because it feels as if she is expressing her real emotion. Anyway her voice is outstanding as well as her emotion.

  • Comment removed

  • Written by a musical genius and performed by the same Leon Russell and Karen Carpenter.

  • This video is so beautiful. Thank you so much for posting. The younger generation needs to see what real singing was like all those years ago. There are some great voices in music today, but I can't think of one that I'd take over Karen Carpenter.

  • Her voice is smooth and soothing. It is so hard to describe but even the hardest heart could melt with her voice. Simply amazing and marvelous.

  • the best song ever sung by the best singer ever

  • I heard sonic youths version first so I love sonic youths, but this version is ok. But sonic youths, at least to me, is better.

  • They let madonna in the rock and roll hall of fame. shame is more like it! this woman runs circles around madonna!

  • @latics40

Karen Carpenter is in the rock and roll hall of fame. didn't you know? The carpenters were already inducted.

Madonna made great tunes herself. she is a one-woman force. not a very good voice but made memorable hits nonetheless.

  • The best Female Alto voice of all time. Absolutely Amazing!

  • RIP Karen. forget about all the b.s. 'voice teachers' tell you and sing from the soul. i notice lifting the shoulders, not opening the mouth very wide, all the stuff teachers have picked on talented students in the past to hold them back, she does and sounds great.

  • Long ago, GREAT, TALENTED singers, like Karen Carpenter,....not worthless,

narcosistic divas.....made great music like this classic.

Rest in Peace, Karen :( thanks for the great music:)

  • Sorry to burst your bubble... Those singers you mentioned, with the exception of kd lang (who does actually drop into the baritone range at times) are low altos/high tenors.

  • Only three women spring to mind when it comes to singing so perfectly it sounds effortless: Karen (obviously), Ella Fitzgerald and kd lang. Not only that but each could reach the low bass range which many women (and a few men for that matter) struggle with yet make it seem as easy as breathing. Each of them would wipe the floor with any of the current crop of 'singers' and it just proves in the case of all three that you don't need to rely on gimmicks or sex to sell records - just a great voice

  • A masterclass in how to sing pitch perfect. Karen's voice was extremely powerful yet soft and vulnerable and could sing at such a low range for such a slightly built women. I love Luther Vandross's version of this as I'm a huge fan of his but I have to say this one shades it. Talented singers like Luther and Karen come round once in a generation if at all and it makes it more important that future generations know what real talented singers are like who don't have to rely on their looks or pers

  • voice of the 70's

  • Beautiful voice from an even more beautiful woman, love ya Karen

  • The voice

  • my 1st time ever hearing this version. I love Luther Vandross's version, but hers its beautiful too!!!

  • Angelic

  • I mean really, who has a better voice?

  • @spicbuddha- No woman has. Or ever has. Or ever will.

  • @spicbuddha Great point... there are other female voices I love, but better?

  • @spicbuddha JUDY GARLAND

  • @spicbuddha no one.....

  • just so,so good

  • just listened to all kind of interpretations of this song. really bad ones (bette midler), mediocre (luther vandross) and good ones (vikki carr).

but even the best ones don't come even close to this. underplaying the moment and making it even more dramatic this way. perfect.

  • WOW...she was only 21 years old in the video

  • Where are the female vocalists that can sing like this today? KD Lang comes to mind, perhaps others, but nobody has this nearly perfect vocal instrument. All the female pop singers of today are too busy doing vocal acrobatics or dancing half naked to disguise their mediocre voices.

  • @steveatl40 ---YES!!! You are so right...KD LANG! Karen was extraordinary and I so love KD LANG! But God I really love Karen!

  • One of the great pop voices - if not the greatest.

What I particularly love is the absence of vocal gymnastics and fllourishes - she just sang the melody as it was and put her heart and soul into it. She draws you in and makes you concentrate on the song and the lyrics, which I think is one of the signs of a great performer.

There is a truth and honesty about her singing which is very moving.

  • @howarda376

Well put. She sang to you, not at you.

  • What a voice Karen had. Every once in a while I have to hear her.

  • Some people are like falling stars...They shine brightly and briefly and then they're gone as fast as they appeared.

  • What a powerful and alluring voice from such a small girl. Amazing! Many singers often do not sound good when singing "live", but here Karen sang the song so impeccably and so beautifully.

  • love her

  • karen you were one talented lady love you

  • she is amazing

  • what a beautiful voice so soulful and clear .

  • One of, if not, the best female singer that ever lived.

  • I have never heard such a unique voice like Karen's. She stands out and I think, always will. She is my first original Diva. RIP Karen, gone too soon.

  • she sings from the heart...and its reaches out to us all...if she was here now..music would be in a different place...her voice has saved my soul numerous times..r.i.p miss carpenter xx
