  • i wonder if jim morrison was inspired by roy. i can hear it

  • Bono often refers to she; meaning the church. I done read it in one of them there books. Walk On. So as one listens to U2, you can find this practice in songs like She Moves In Mysterious Ways, Grace and I Can`t Live With or Without You. And to that yahoo who emailed me a couple of years ago saying it wasn`t in the Bible; and Bono is no saint; pound salt Flanders. The Bible says we are all saints. God bless U2 and Roy Orbison for the chills and the tears of longing. God bless us all.

  • @scrapheappoet one of them there book? How much Roy or Bono for that matter do you really listen to, or is this just another religious thing? I love god don't get me wrong, but please dont bring it to a roy song that wasnt meant to be religious. Thank you so , for being a faithful follower though :)

  • oh my. this 1 is tough. bono's greatest written piece and roy nailed it. chills when and if i hear it. this is as close as perfect pop/rock ever. like a good phil spector, beach boys and beatles work, same vibe...epic. oh and tbone burnett produced this diamond. 23 years later still great.

  • Roys vocals cannot be matched, i have never ever heard someone sing at this level with the vocal range he had, I am 24 years old and this is one of my favourite songs. Not just vocally but also the lyrics in this are brilliant. x

  • one of bonos best, he can crack out a decent tune so he can!

  • fantastic song, one of the greatest.

  • no one could sing like roy

  • @TheBelstone Absolutely. I had the honour of seeing him on 3 separate tours, and the audience literally worshipped him. Is this his best song? I really cannot decide!

  • Brilliant song!

  • good song. better than 'pretty woman" an overrated song IMO

  • He had a vocal range of nearly 3 octaves. Aside from opera singers, hardly any could touch him in terms of range.

  • if i tried to go that high my eyes would explode

  • great tune great legend

  • I bet GOD just sits and listerns to Roy sing. His songs and his voice still bring tears to my eyes. Oh Roy, still bringing joy to my ears at 55 years old, listering to you sing R.I.P my friend.

  • @asaps002 Amen!!! tears in my eyes right now as I listen to our Hero sing!!! Yes, Roy is holding concerts everyday in Heaven!!!

  • I first heard this amazing song about 20 years ago barreling down the Mass Pike coming back from a wonderful day at a beach in New Hampshire... and just belted out this song with a buddy in my truck. Its a very fond memory and one I will never forget!!

  • I've loved this song since I was about 4 years old... Course I couldn't really understand the meaning of the lyrics back then, I just loved the melody and the sound of Roy's voice.

Now I'm 16 and heartbroken, I feel the lyrics fully... This song is simply... Beautiful. Gotten me through some tough times.

  • Roy era un grande con un voz privilegiada,

  • I think its obvious why bono had Roy do the song...cuz no one could do it as well as Roy..Bono knew that ,and Roy proved it...yet another example of Major Top 40 talent bowing to Roy and his humbling voice.

  • no one should swear during a roy song why? because ROY wouldn't like it

  • heatbrakingly beautiful...

  • just to let you know roy wears those shades cuz he kept crying and he did want anyone to see.

  • If my love is blind, then i dont wanna see heaven or hell...

  • just superb. what else is there to say.

  • Bono owes his entire career to Tha Roy. :-)

  • You can really see in this song how Roy Orbison was the forerunner to and a big influence on U2. Very ethereal, subtle style.

  • I was in love with a girl when this was released. Alas she didn't love me. Shame. Every time I listen to this, I am reminded of her. Catherine was her name. Catherine Bell. She was 21 then. Now she'll be 43. How time flies. Seems like yesterday...

  • @sirtinycreep

Funny that you brought that up: When I listen to this song, which I do love, I think of all the girls/women whom I've fallen in love with who have hurt me.

  • @bigpopparamma That's because it's a very effective song. Probably Bono's best ever!

  • Powerful song, captivating. Love this.

  • This song totally reminds me of my ex girlfriend. What a dumb little bitch! Beautiful song though!

  • i am seriously pissed off beyond all belief that he is not in the top 100 artist of all time according to vh1. the greatest voice of all time and hes not on the list. but u better believe that justin timberlake and jay-z made the list. such disrespect. people don't know music for shit!

  • @mmay1717 Fuck Vh1!

  • @mmay1717 thats the fucking truth man

  • @mmay1717 U are so right!! RIP Roy!!

  • @mmay1717 Best not to take these lists too seriously. Most of my favourite music is classical stuff, and it's not all that popular, lol.

  • PERFECTION on so many levels..This is really amazing !!! Roy was the rarest of gems and oh so sorely missed...

  • Roy died two months after recording this. So tragic.

  • Roy was a legend. No one will ever sound like this!! Awesome

  • I think this is Roy at his finest - sadly, he passed away not long after the release of this album, if I'm not mistaken....

  • This song is amazing REALLY GOOD 5/5

  • Roy Orbison's voice is so haunting, but in a wonderful way......

  • im the fallen angel that the love of my life died tryin to figure out.....am i left 2 burn.....

  • Just to comment on the "discusting laguage'' sic. I don't like it any more than you but unfortunately that is the price of free speech. If you want the alternative, just think in terms of 1930's Germany.

  • a song that is written is only words and notes on a piece of paper...

did you ever stop to wonder how differant this song would sound if U2 kept it ?

we all know that Roy and his magic voice surely made it sound the best it ever could be. it is one great tune...

  • roy is still the best,

but ...utube, why do you insist on printing such filthy language in ''comments;; you ''approved comments depatrment'' leaves a lot to be desired. what are you thinking. what parent would let their kids look at this site with such discusting language which i find highly offensive. no wonder the world is in a mess, with this stuff in your face where ever you go, i'm very dissapointed in you all.

    choeysangel

  • @CHOEYSANGEL. I absolutely agree. There is no need to include offensive (filthy) language on comments. It not only degrades the site but it demeans the writer.

  • @CHOEYSANGEL Ma'am, suck my dick.

  • Comment removed

  • @CHOEYSANGEL people swear thats part of the world. Besides they probably hear more bad language at school than on youtube. Its not youtube's job to teach them manors or right and wrong its your job. Dont blame the world if your kid ends up fucked up blame yourself.

  • @MrTwatmasterfleX less swearing!

  • @CHOEYSANGEL The sorrow and the pity.

  • I'm Irish and actually regard U2 as the most over rated band of all time. Having said that, surely Bono's most inspired moment was when he gave this beautiful song to the big O.

  • unbeleivable!!!

  • Mystery???? Really???? Open book full of venom,

    hate and rage.

  • @HateYouSoMuch1

    :-)))

  • amazing track, amazing voice, at least the song is there to remember a true king of music....

  • what a voice

  • het is een plaat van niets

  • kut

  • kut

  • Coolest man on earth!

  • Roy's vocals are on another level. There is Roy and then eveyone else. Even the the King said Roy Orbison is the best singer in the world.

  • @oscarmarsh , You're Right, "The King"(Elvis Presley) said once, "I wish I could sing like Roy Orbison." And, Johnny Cash agreed with Elvis. Roy Orbison is the greatest male vocalist to ever live......EVER!!!

  • @oscarmarsh hah i like that instead of Elvis you say the King (well he really is)

  • if the guy would have watched what he ate and didn't smoke he would still be with us. In other words jack lalanne should have been a something similar to a spiritual advisor

  • A voice and delivery like Roy's was one in a billion. At 52 he could still blow everyone away. In fact, his artistry was still growing.

  • Funny that this is a one off, because it's as good as anything U2 did. It's actually a hell of a song, but then Orbison was a hell of a singer, even at 51 or whatever when he did this. As an attempted singer, I gotta say, Roy, YOU MAKE EVERYONE ELSE LOOK BAD!!!

the thing that's killer isn't even technical phrasing, but his voice is so good, and it often sounds like it might spin out, but it's still great. Fantastic. Wish I had seen him live....

  • and I just looked away....

  • as a french poet once said: melancholy means to enjoy one´s sadness...

  • beautiful song writen by bono especialy for roy

  • it wasnt written especially for him

  • when bono was writing the song he had roy orbison in mind then roy came back stage after a gig and asked bono if he had any songs for him bono said he had one in mind so technically your right in was not spercificaly for roy are you happy now bro

  • @michael0909087 seems it was kind of a happy coincidence though :) check the tube with the name Bono : Roy Orbison : Mystery Girl

  • @michael0909087 bono is a punk and prick

  • @shinneybuckles what do you know ya talentless piece of shit bonos got more talent in his shit than you have in your full body

  • @michael0909087 bono is a piece of crap, music wise he has talent and is gifted but he is scum. plus you know nothing about me. let your crush on him go

  • Shivers. Beautiful song. Roy Orbison was a great singer.

  • bloody classic !!!!!!

  • this tune was on secret dairy of a call girl lastnite. rewinded it at least 5 times and put it up full boot.

    classic

    so soulful

dont make them like they used too

  • Soo good, this is the song my parents danced their first time!!

  • @pally1973 written by bono mate

  • @TheBaboon5 From Wikipedia,

All the tracks were recorded in late 1988, and it was finalized for release in the weeks following his death through the collaborative efforts of several artists who were all friends and admirers. The album was named after the chorus from the track "She's a Mystery to Me", written for Orbison by U2's Bono and The Edge.

  • @pally1973

I knew Bono only half wrote it as he only has half of a brain

  • @rstandmartin Mad Elvis fan. Go get a fucking life.

  • @pally1973

roy is dead as well .............just like Bono nobody listens to his music or his stupid views on the world. But is'nt it funny no matter what big event comes up the silly bugger is always there poking his fucking nose in

  • @rstandmartin just regarding your comment on nobody listens to bonos or u2 music....your head must be firmly wedged up your own asshole cause if you check the statistics you'll find they sold out there last load of world wide stadium tours and were also the biggest earners last year....unless you think that everybody that went to the concerts wore ear muffs you dickhead

  • @rstandmartin holy shit, whoever the fuck you are you haven't got the faintest idea of what you are saying, you are an embarrassment and should really think before you make ridiculous comments, you sad pathetic clown, go listen to dolly parton you fucking idiot!

  • @rstandmartin Guess you have no brain mate.

  • Full-throated passion. Lovely and hypnotic. I do miss Roy Orbison, There will never be another like him.

  • Beautiful song!

  • is right

  • True vocal elixir!

  • This music goes to the soul

  • Amazing song! U2 played a bit of it in Gothenburg this year...but should play it more often.

  • damn straight it is and wouldn't the world be a better place if people just listened to it!

  • @angie4josh so right, roy was a true gent, great voice and great songs.

  • Roy saved his best for last. Sublime right to the end.

  • One of the very rare and gifted musicians I would have enjoyed meeting. Blessings to you, Roy, and thank you.

  • Vary rare,The male Karen Carpenter

  • @ MrSteveUtah

Excellent, Mr. Utah, I lurve her, too. And so did my Dad especially. :p

  • He was, and will always be, an FANTASTIC singer. R.I.P Roy Kelton Orbison. I will always be a faithful fan.

  • Incredible voice, which he can also use.

  • obviously..if he couldn't use it, it wouldn't be incredible..duhhhhh...yet another youtube noob.

  • noob at the tube, but not with roy orbisons music.

  • I think you have tried nob several times...

  • don't worry just think about the music, it's all about the music!

  • Comment removed

  • That is true! and this still sounds damn good!

  • Always will be the best music ever created, such a shame that era is gone, but at least we still have the privilege of being able to listen to such wonderful and amazing music:)

  • What the hell is wrong with you? Leave your WOW station dude, try to take out your insignificance and angst somewhere else: not underneath a fricken Orbison track.

  • Absolutely fabulous!! This song is the first song in a long time to make the hairs stand on end. super Roy R.I.P

  • this is the story of my life right now.... as if they (bono and roy) new 25 years ago how my life would be today....

  • wish i,d seen him

  • Wow, I love Roy Orbisons voice more every time I hear a new song from him.

  • The more I listen to it the more i like it

  • except bono isn't the saint you all think

  • for fuck sake its not bono who isnt payin tax ,its u2 as a business and if i could, id do the exact same thing and you would too. hypocrite.

  • a song that makes the hair on your neck stand up simply brilliant

  • And written by Bono as well!

  • very good...

  • his wife died on a motorcycle accident and a few years later his 2 sons died in a house fire ..and the poor man himself died of a heart attack , in the early 80s prob of a broken heart :( very sad

  • He died in 1988 so not late 80s, but yes the sadness in his music is what makes the songs bittersweet

  • 1988 to be Exact

  • Beautiful song...:)

  • A Great singer

  • proper love song

  • Roy, throughout his career was just superb.

  • one of my favourite songs ever, thanks!

  • Roy Orbison died too early. He had one of the 5 best voices in rock. Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen was a huge fan.

  • think about it LyonS........Roy & Del Shannon are both gone but they both could hit their "high notes" no doubt about it. They both were two great artist's that left us way too early. God Bless them both. Both were ahead of their time in their own unique way/style and no other artist can take that away from both of them partner..............

  • the big o the ledgend the true king of rock n roll enough said

  • Has anyone actually met Roy Orbison ?

What has become of the rest of his family ?

  • I've met Roy Orbison two times. The first time was in Ipswich England in 1985 and the second tme was in Amsterdm in Holland 1987. In Ipswich I (and other fans from Holland) was invited back stage by Roy. We shook hands and talked about the show he gave that evening and also about his new single Wild Hearts. In Amsterdam we shook hands again. Roy had done a tour in Belgium and Holland and a meeting with the fans was arranged. The man was really nice. Such a loss for the music bussiness..

  • love the start of this song!! gives a tingle up the spine for some reason! the man was gifted

  • Amazing

  • I was told that when Elvis Presley was asked was he the best singer in the world he said "No, Roy Orbinson is".

  • That is absolutely correct....When Elvis put on records to listen to...Roy was always on his record player....they knew each other well.

A tribute to the classiness of Elvis' sense of greatness...

  • Thanks for confirming.

  • That's cool to know, because I'd heard that they weren't so cool together, kind of rival. I hope not.

Are you cat person too ? I love cats, I have 3 but have had 9 at one time or another, meow.

  • NO, they never were rivals, only in the sense they were in competition with every other performer of the day, which is as it always is.

And, yes, my passion, next to my Lord and Saviour is kittiies. I do have nine but have had as many as seventeen at one time. I've actually loved over forty kitties in my lifetime...and three dogs

  • Comment removed

  • Bono, you are simply the best!

  • Roy Orbison is the best! But Bono is really good to of course!

  • I meant the best in writing songs. The lyrics and the melody are amazing in this song.

  • She's a Mystery to Me: Written by David Evans (The Edge) and Paul Hewson (Bono). Produced by Bono. Engineered and mixed by Don Smith. Roy Orbison: Guitar, vocals. Bono - Guitars. Howie Epstein: Bass. Benmont Tench: Piano and cheap strings. Jim Keltner: Drums. Arranged by Benmont Tench

  • good info dude...thanks.

  • three small words WHAT A VOICE superb...

  • The word is "other-worldly".

Roy's voice is not of this world.

That's why it has such a profound effect on hearers. The man not only had a "gift''....he WAS a gift.

  • This is Roy's best song by far, I mean it sends chills up your spine when you hear it. It's so sad he passed before he could see the success of this record.

  • too true, one of the few songs that no matter how many times i've heard it, evertime i come back to it it sends chills!

  • i heard this today in the super market, it put a big smile on my face, i started laughing really ,i never did like roy, but this is ... cool... lol.

  • Enough said above, the King indeed, no question. This IS the stuff!!

  • Enough said above, the king indeed, no question.

  • one of the most beautiful songs ever

  • It might be Bono's song, but it's Roy's song, you know?

  • No, it's still Bono's and Edge's. ONE would have sounded pretty damn good if sang by Roy also. But Roy didn't dream it, suffer it, or create it. He performed it.

  • @bigfishdoc - the lyrics and music are. The performance though...you can have the best words & lyrics performed by a mediocre performer and it's shyte. Roy was one of the few singers who could traverse 4 octaves, a voice of angels that sends shivers down your spine even now, 20 years after his passing. You can feel the pain in Roy's voice.

  • Spine chilling ecstasy!

  • damn pure awesomeness

  • Beuatiful -thank you Bono & Roy...this is what music is to me...

  • this Song is so amazing!

i love this voice, Roy Orbison

    is the King.

    *****

  • one very great song indeed.
