You can actually increase the length of the rope on the arrow.

8 Strings, 1 Arrow = 1 arrow with 8 blocks of rope attached to it

8 Strings, 1 Arrow with rope = 1 arrow with 16 blocks of rope attached to it

Everytime you craft 8 strings onto an arrow that already has rope on it, you increase the rope's length on the arrow up to 6 times the original length.

You can continue doing this and get an arrow with 64 blocks of rope, with which you can span rope bridges or ziplines across entire canyons :)
