  • Music is so much more than just a bunch of notes to be played in succession. Bravo, Kogan, for such a heartfelt and unique performance!

  • This piece is my first love..love that stays forever....Brilliant play

  • @muslit When you're at his level; you don't really connect with other people anymore

  • i saw him perform at the end of the 50's - he didn't connect with audiences like oistrakh

  • а мурашки где?! Где они, всенепременно присутствующие на моей коже во время исполнения Хейфеца?

  • thank you forposting these videos. u are doing a service for us all!

  • Flawless!

  • Can someone please tell me where I can find this on a CD (or record)?

  • @sjymusic1 You have to keep in mind that Kogan favors using 4 steel strings, which when compared to Gut, has much more clarity and faster response but lack of overtones.

  • Unmatched clarity, but the tempo is not my favorite.

  • super

  • omg I have heard this Caprice from the greatest violinists but none gave me goosebump like Kogan!

Estasiante e perfino commovente, tanta bellezza e bravura !!!

  • Gotta love this rendition. It's not really that slow...and full of personality. Perfect technique of course. Kogan was the best ever he just wasn't famous. Anyone know what version this is?

  • the best performance of caprice 24 I ever heard. Also, listen to Kogan's Carmen's vatiations. Amazing.

  • The title should be: Kogan plays with Paganini Caprice 24.

  • possibly the best I've heard of this

  • So outstanding! Thanks for posting!

  • VERY exotic performing.I like returning

  • Oh sadness; this tune was made for enyone to cry !

  • You`re right Rolling Shit, Troussov plays the Auer edition, and Kogan`s is slightly different. Oistrakh and Kogan both admired Heifetz, and Kogan was even scheduled to attend a Heifetz birthday in the 80`s that was prevented by US-USSR political problems. Heifetz selected and played only what he believed in,and if that also entertained,so much the better.

  • @sharlesin Well,I didn't mean that Oistrakh and Kogan were enemies with Heifeltz. And of course they admired each other,as they all were brilliant violinists. But definately Oistrakh and Kogan didn't share the same musical taste with Heifeltz.Heifeltz was a star in U.S.On the other hand Kogan lived in a very simple way.Heifeltz was a part of American showbiz, just like Michael Rabin.Of course all these violinists were gods and I don't blame anyone. It's a matter of taste.

  • If you can play this you've pretty mastered everything there is to playing the violin...

  • why only Jewish are rare violin treasures?

Is that because in They culture hardworking from early child age so important?

Or violinist is that popular in They?

  • @PTMKWarszawa - music has no ethinc favorites...my first teacher was a world class Jewish violinist, who studied with an even greater German musician, and played a most wonderful violin made by an Italian...and then I studied with an Italian, who spent many years with a great Polish teacher...and so it goes. Love of music is our common bond

  • Kogan is the Greatest Violinist of the 20th Century! Thank you.

  • Slower than what I'm used to, but still brilliant.

  • Kogan is the best. Thank you.

  • Fort et trop méconnu du public...Un des jeux sur deux cordes le plus harmonieux que j'ai entendu.

  • Listen Ilia kaler and Konstatny Andrzej Kulka

  • Ah...=o awesome!!!

  • Anyone else besides me a bit disappointed after hearing this?

I mean, don't get me wrong,it's brilliant and all,but I expected Kogan to approach,or rather attack this piece with tons more power, passion, and speed.I almost feel he's holding back.Heifetz rendition is the greatest, and Kogan didn't give him the run for his money like I expected him to.Having said this,Kogan remains one of my all time favorites!

  • is this in Bb minor? cause it sound a bit higher than original... wich is in a minor

  • @Kekspere sometimes when a recording is done in vinyl, sometimes the sound gets distorted.

  • Paganini would like to listen this modified version.

  • I think that Kogan's playing is clean and bright. Heifelz plays very fast but not as clean as Kogan.I also think that Perlman is a great violinist but he is not even close to them. But I must say that King David Oistrkh was the best violinist ever. He could play as fast as Heifelz did and the quality of every single was bright and astonishing.I think that Oistrakh , Heifelz and Kogan were violin gods , and no one until today is even close to them.

  • I think u may have to get yours ears seriously checked out every statement u made was false

  • @gibsonpaddy you have no idea what violin is.What excactly was wrong?

  • @RollingShit1234 you miss the point I believe....

  • Perfect. Great Tempo.

  • Kogan, Accardo and Markov...the are the best

  • @vagabonda1982 sorry..... Accardo??!!?? Are u seriously comparing Accardo to Kogan??!!

  • yampolski version I think,

    russian use that

  • Better than Accardo one. He expresses more feeling.

  • It seems so slow... But I guess it's his style. This is great. I like it no matter how slow it's slow.

  • @lezare2012 It's not his style. He could play it incredibly fast. It's much more difficult at this tempo.

  • wow. I'm used to Ilya Kaler execution, but this interpretation is also worth listening.

  • Great'

  • Great version, although I prefer it at a little faster tempo. But Kogan is a master.

  • I find that both Kogan and Heifetz are very good, but I must add that I think Itzhak perlman is even with them in this performance or even better. Either way all three are masters at the violin.

  • Haunting!!

  • I love this interpretation but I think comparisons to Heifetz from the Kogan or even Accardo (my favorite here on YouTube) recording must be tempered with mercy!

While the others are in a more comfortable studio setting, Heifetz is playing live in concert. Even the "sang froid" Heifetz can have less than perfect execution in a live performance.

Does anyone know whether there Is there a studio recording of Heifetz playing this? I've never heard one.

  • Yes,there is a studio recording of Heifetz playing this, but it's very early-either vol 1 or 2 of The complete Heifetz

  • I've looking for the same thing to prove what my teacher taught me is wrong: "Heifetz is not an expert on Paganini." but I failed. Never mind that; Heifetz and Kogan command my highest respect and I'm not even qualified to criticise. But I would be grateful to anyone for the posting just to satisfy my curiosity.

  • After repeatetly compare the two masters' work : Kogan's has much more clearity even stacado, has more dynamics ( even picking and whisleing)power(Paganini's strong charactor) plus a tremendas finishing.Althrough Heifez got 20 times more viewers. My heart go to Kogan, a twenty time under rated virtuoso

  • WOW more classical music lovers need to hear Kogan's 24th caprice

  • this certainly is not the original version (new variations, out of order variations, new notes, etc.), but nice, careful playing anyway

  • i like that kogan doesn't play this in the flashy manner heifetz does. granted, this is audio and it does look cool to watch heifetz go nuts on the violin. but i think it betrays a tenderness in kogan's approach to the violin that's overlooked sometimes

  • I come back to this every few days. It provides me with the fuel I need.

  • it´s REALLY REALLY GREAT!!!

  • This is my favorite interpretation of paganini's 24. It's odd, wiki says that he was criticized for using all steel strings because it lacked depth, warmth, and sweetness but his playing is oozing with depth and emotion in this piece all while being clear and melodic. Love it.

  • kogan is full of emotin always i love this version, although i have heard faster ones speed isnt everything

  • Are you tone deaf? Of course nothing is absolutely perfect, but let's see you reproduce such a performance. The harmonics are close to perfect, the articulations are extremely clear, which Heifetz was unable to do at the show off speeds he played. The only real competition for favorite performance of Paganini's 24, in my opinion, is Primrose on viola. He was able to make the viola do things that many violinists could not...that just speaks for itself what a masterful player he was.

  • I think that Heifetz's accelerated tempos reveal (and permit) longer phrasing in some works, but not Paganini. This Kogan version is superb.

  • I heard a BRAHMS variation in this for some reason. What a strange collection of variations! Fantastic playing though....

  • The harmonics are the best that i've heard; close your eyes and they actual sound like a real whistle or a bird singing.

  • At 2:06 it sounds like violin and cello playing together...best technique and performance I've ever heard. He even looks a little like Paganini ;)

  • Hey man... what are u saing?

Paganini is more Handosome? Have u ever seen him?

    Impara a parlare inglese ltalianozzo!

  • at 1:08, the high notes in octaves sound like singing.... beautiful

  • Thank you for this wonderful gift.He is fantastic! Thanks again!

  • At 0:55 at 3:32 he turns the violin into SOMETHING else. I have heard this capriccio from manies, but this sound effect is absolutely amazing. he is nearly non-human

  • Comment removed

  • @pianofolle omg so true, fascinating...so tragic and dramatic but also powerful and exotic =I

  • @pianofolle

His rivals once started a rumor that his violin was strung with the vocal cords of women and going to his performances would send ya to hell :D Harrrrrdcore.

  • @SilverSurferSmurf LoL... thanks for the anecdote. It's quite understandable though!

  • Anybody know what edition this is? It's the exact same one Menuhin plays

  • the end is taken from the Auer-version, and no, menuhin didn't play the same, just look at the variation after the tenths... not the same

  • Thank you so much for all of these awesome recordings by Kogan, they're amazing.

  • I absolutely agree, forceful, sensitive and intelligent. I´m learnng so much from your channel its a real pleasure and a priveledge. Thankyou for the reference to Rabin - It will be the first recording of Rabin, I´ll be listnening to.

  • I just downloaded Kogans interpretation of Tjaikovsky´s violinconserto from Itunes. Extraordinary.

  • best tchaikovsky i ever heard rabins is good too

  • I absolutely agree, forceful, sensitive and intelligent. Thanks for the reference to Rabin.

  • thanx for the uploading

  • I love the way he does not try to race through this-he plays it with beauty and plays every note with importance. This is fabulous!

  • emi have published a packpage of kogan recordings which include tchaikovsky concerto

  • i think the tchaik is the best thing he ever did

  • Bom, mas está um pouco lento. Não se compara a Heifetz.

  • I haven't heared anybody play this caprice in such a thoughtfull way!

  • still like heifetz's version better.. but the technique is about equal

  • To be honest ,Heifetz is my idol. In my opinion , there was ,and is,no violin player to equal Jascha Heifetz.I would say that,if Heifetz is a god, than Kogan is a demi-god.:) When I said that I've never heart anyone play this this way, I of course didn't refere to technique, but to the style of playing;for this particular piece ,I enjoy Kogan a lot.

  • Well, Heifetz and Kogan are two very different players with two different styles. I personally think nobody plays Paganini like Kogan, and I do like his interpretation and sound better than Heifetz. Heifetz has a bit more of "show-off"-like technical style (not meant in a bad way), while Kogan is more thoughtful. Both are great in their own ways.

  • I do agree that Heifetz and Kogan are different great players, with individual styles.I also agree with you that Kogan may be the best Paganini player(a top note to this is that Heifetz didn't actually record much Paganini , so if you want to compare them in this regard , you can't really).I do not agree with you saying that Heifetz's playing is "show-off"-in any way (good or bad).

  • I don't think you can quantify or measure violinists of this magnitude, as a violinist I have the GREATEST respect for both Kogan and Heifetz. For some reason Kogan has the ability to reach in and rock my world, an ethereal quality that sets me on fire--I love listening to Heifetz but I really like getting set on FIRE and Kogan is burning me down!

  • Of course. Simple mortals like us can't measure demigods .:) We may only have small preferences. My humble preference is 1.Heifetz , 2.Kogan ....;) As for my favorite Paganini player , that is Kogan.Fire I encouter both in Kogan and Heifetz , but in different ways.

  • I love the changes in character Kogan strives to produce. Especially the false harmonics, very ghostly!

  • oh my god.. THE OCTAVES!!!!

  • the most musical 24th Ive ever heard. Most virtuosi play this as purely a techical exercise. This is music. Kogan was always full of surprises.

  • Notice that he plays the last Auer-Heifetz variation instead of the standard one.

  • very interesting i did notice that, its different than the one i usually hear played by rabin, etc

  • Yes this is a fantastic recording! He actually does a fusion of the Kreisler and Auer arrangements which is quite interesting. The last variation is by Auer.

  • @sharlesin I'm afraid that you are wrong my friend. It's totally different. It's Kogan's edition and it's the best recording of the Paganini's 24th caprice I've ever heard. In Soviet Union Auer and Heifeltz were believed to be traitors and there was no love between Heifeltz and Kogan who was a Communist.Totally different music taste.Heifeltz was all about impresses when Oistrakh,Kogan,Gilels,Rostropovich,Richter played music in order to express what they believed.

  • Wow, this is amazing. Do you have the Tchaik recording?

  • yes its the best tchaikovsky ive ever heard tied with rabin but i wont upload it because you can buy it and its in print, i only upload rare and out of print recordings

you should buy kogans tchaikovsky its really awesome, preferrably on a double cd called "Artist Profile" but get it from the testament label if you have to, im not sure if its the same recording or not
