@seantotheextreme I'm sorry to say, friend, that $200 will not get you a mid-level mandolin. Rather it will get you a decent starter.

As a starter mandolin I recommend the Eastman 505 mandolin.

It's probably the best thing you can get for your value at about $400

It's nothing like playing a guitar. It's a different tuning, GGDDAAee is the tuning.

But if you play guitar, you'll find it easier to start with a mandolin then someone who has never played a stringed instrument before.

I know what you mean. The mandolin has a tiny sound. It always sounds a bit sharp. And the quality on youtube is also very poor. In real it sounds pretty ok. (I have a video: St.anne's reel where the sounds is better. Because I used a different recorder).
