That's great. Thank you for taking us to the store to show us exactly how it works. I've been buying them at the art store for the same price for a little 11x14. Now I know to mosey down to the home depot store instead! (Funny that they booted you out with your camera too haha)
A correction on the name for your favorite brushes, they are called Filberts. a bright is a square flat. or a shorter than a flat. a filbert is a flat with a rounded tip.
AJ...you are right about that! I didn't even realize that is what I had said in the video. I buy new brushes all the time and I know what to look for....duh! Thanks for pointing our my error.
about the brushes (which tips are not straight anymore) I kinda learned in school that you can make them straight again with glue. but I'm not sure (It has been 4-5 years since that)
oh and... you might watch the youtube channel of "cheapjoes". he has advice on how to paint and use oil supplies. I have him supscribed so you can access him via my channel
It's funny to think that turn the clock back -not all that many years- to be called an artist one must be very adept at using oils. The past century has really opened up the field of art to so many different media, and at such affordable prices too. I can't imagine how expensive it used to be to be a painter/artist.
---
That said, I'm still terrified of oils. XD
I've retreated to my "specialties" and there I'm ensconced. It is nice to see others using oils - at least my phobia isn't that bad.
I was just painting on MDF yesterday... not art really, but as a base to a sculpture for a friend. That is some pretty thirsty material. to be sure, especially the sides. How many coats do you use for the base coat? Do you gesso it? How about the sides?
I put 2-3 coats of gesso on the panels. I also sand the sides where they are cut and rough. I also put a coat of acrylic paints on top of the gesso...using some warm color of yellow or red. Then I paint the sides with black acrylic to give them a more finished look.
Yes, I certainly could have been more discreet about my video making process! I was standing in the middle of the aisle talking very loudly, in my usual fashion, and this attracted too many people........
I think I told you already that I had been petrified about using oils...why, I don't know. But I have wanted to learn how to use them for years and years....oils are still the #1 selling medium.
So I got into this daily painting challenge and made a whole stack of the little oil studies and now I love the stuff!

Your Home Depot looks like our Home depot.
Gotta go with the hidden camera next time. I'm thinking about getting one of those sunglass cams myself.
